    The MFC-J5620DW, MFC-J5625DW and MFC-J5720DW have the same3.7"(93.4 mm) Touchscreen LCD and Touchpanel. 1

    NOTEMost of the illustrations in this User’s Guide show the MFC-J5720DW.

    1 3.7"(93.4 mm) Touchscreen LCD (LiquidCrystal Display)

    Access the menus and options you want bypressing them as they are displayed on theTouchscreen LCD.You can adjust the angle of the TouchscreenLCD and Touchpanel by lifting it. To lower thiscontrol panel, press the release button that islocated behind it, as shown in the illustration.

    Press to go back to the previous menulevel.

    Home

    Press to return to the Home screen. Bydefault it displays the date and time, butyou can change the default settings.

    Cancel

    Press to cancel an operation when lit.

    3 Power On/Off

    Press to turn the machine on.

    Press and hold down to turn the machine

    off. The Touchscreen LCD displaysShutting Down and stays on for a few

    seconds before turning off.If you have connected an external telephone orTAD, it is always available for use.

    If you turn the machine off using , it still

    periodically cleans the print head to maintainprint quality. To prolong the life of the printhead, provide better ink efficiency, andmaintain print quality, keep your machineconnected to the power at all times.

    The Basic Functions screen displays the dateand time and provides access to the Fax,Copy and Scan modes.

    1 Wireless Status

    A four-level indicator on the Ready Modescreen displays the current wireless signal

    strength when using a wirelessconnection.

    When appears on the

    Touchscreen, press it to configure yourwireless settings. For moreinformation, see Quick Setup Guide.

    2 Ink

    Displays the available ink volume. Pressto access the Ink menu.

    When the ink cartridge is near the end ofits life or having a problem, an error icon isdisplayed on the ink colour.

    Press to access the settings.

    4 Shortcuts

    Press to access the Shortcuts screens.

    5 Date & Time

    Displays the date and time that has beenset in the machine.

    6 Modes:

    7 Add Shortcut

    Create Shortcuts for frequently-usedoperations, such as sending a fax,copying, scanning and using WebConnect.

    Three Shortcuts screens are availablewith space for up to six Shortcuts on eachscreen.

    When one of the Shortcuts screens is setas the Home screen, press

    8 Stored Faxes:

    When Fax Preview is set to Off ,Stored Faxes displays how manyreceived faxes are in the machine’smemory.

    Press Print to print the faxes.

    9 New Fax(es):

    When Fax Preview is set to On ,New Fax(es) displays how many newfaxes you have received and stored in themachine’s memory.

    Press View to view your faxes on theTouchscreen.

    10 Warning icon

    The warning icon appears when thereis an error or maintenance message;press Detail to view it, and then press

    to return to Ready mode.

    Settings screen 1

    When you press , the Touchscreen LCD

    displays the machine’s status.This screen provides access to all themachine’s settings.

    1 Maintenance

    Press to access the Maintenance menu.

    Check and improve the print quality, clean

    the print head and check the available inkvolume. You can also use theMaintenance solution menu to solve arecurring paper jam error.

    2 Receive Mode

    Displays the current Receive Mode:

    Fax (Fax Only)

    Fax/Tel

    External TAD

    3 Wi-Fi

    Press to set up a wireless networkconnection.

    A four-level indicator on the screen

    Entering Text 1

    When you must enter text into the machine, a

    keyboard appears on the Touchscreen.

    Press to cycle between letters,numbers and special characters.

    NOTETo change between lowercase or

    uppercase, press .

    Inserting spaces 1

    To enter a space, press Space or you can

    press c to move the cursor.

    NOTEThe characters that are available maydiffer depending on your country.

    Making corrections 1

    If you entered an incorrect character andwant to change it, press d to move the cursorto highlight the incorrect character, and thenpress . Enter the correct character. Youcan also use the cursor to go back and insertcharacters.

    To erase all the characters, pressrepeatedly.

    2Before loading paper 2

    Load only one size of paper and one type ofpaper in the paper tray at a time.

    When loading a different paper size in thetray, you must also change the paper sizesetting in the machine. Doing this enablesthe machine to automatically feed paperfrom the appropriate tray if auto tray selecthas been set in the machine or printerdriver. ( See Set Paper Size and Type on page 23 .)

    If the Check Paper setting is On , themachine will display a message asking ifyou want to change the paper type andpaper size when you pull Tray #1 orTray #2 (MFC-J5720DW) out of themachine or load paper in the MP Tray.Change the paper size and paper typesettings if needed, according to theinstructions on the Touchscreen.(See Check Paper setting on page 24 .)

    a Pull Tray #1 completely out of themachine.

    b Gently press and slide the paperguides (1) to fit the paper size.Make sure the triangular mark (2) on thepaper guide (1) lines up with the markfor the paper size you are using.

    c Fan the stack of paper well to avoidpaper jams and misfeeds.

    NOTE Always make sure the paper is not curled.

    d Load paper in the paper tray with theprinting surface face down .Check that the paper is flat in the tray.

    e Gently adjust the paper guides (1) to thepaper.Make sure the paper guides touch thesides of the paper.

    g Slowly push the paper tray completelyinto the machine.

    h Pull out the paper support (1) until itlocks into place, and then unfold thepaper support flap (2).

    iChange the paper size setting in themachine’s menu, if needed.(See Set Paper Size and Type on page 23 .)

    When using A3 or Ledger size paper: 2

    a Pull Tray #1 completely out of themachine. Rest the tray on a flat surface.

    b Push the blue slider until it locks in therelease position, and then extend thetray until the blue slider returns to andlocks in the default position. Open thetray cover and make sure the triangularmark inside the tray (1) lines up with themark (2) for B4 JIS/LGL , as shown inthe illustration.

    Push the blue slider a second time untilit locks in the release position, and thenextend the tray until the blue sliderreturns to and locks in the defaultposition. Open the tray cover and makesure the triangular mark inside thetray (1) lines up with the mark (2) forA3/LGR , as shown in the illustration.

    3 Lift the A4/LTR stopper (1) if A4 orLetter size paper is in Tray #2.

    4 Slowly push Tray #2 completelyinto the machine.

    1 Pull Tray #1 out of the machine.

    2 In the same way you extendedTray #2, push the blue slider andextend Tray #1 to Ledger or A3size, so it is even with Tray #2.

    If you have a voicemail service on thetelephone line that your Brother machine isconnected to, they may conflict with oneanother when receiving incoming faxes. Ifusing this service, we suggest setting theBrother machine’s Receive Mode toManual . (See Choose the Receive Mode on page 40 .)

    Voice over Internet Protocol(VoIP) 8

    VoIP is a type of phone system that uses anInternet connection instead of a traditionaltelephone line. Your machine may not workwith some VoIP systems. If you havequestions about how to connect yourmachine to the VoIP system, contact yourVoIP provider.

    Connecting an externaltelephone answering device(TAD) 8

    You may choose to connect an externalanswering device to your Brother machine.To receive faxes successfully, you mustconnect it correctly. Connect your externalTAD to the T-piece connector on the Brotherline cable supplied with your machine. Whenrecording an outgoing message on yourexternal TAD, we recommend recording5 seconds of silence at the beginning of yourmessage, and limiting your speaking to20 seconds. Set your machine’s ReceiveMode to External TAD .

    External and extensiontelephones 8

    You can connect a separate phone into theT-piece connector on your Brother line cablesupplied with your machine. If you answer afax call on an extension or externaltelephone, you can make your machinereceive the fax by pressing l 5 1 .     Fax/Tel mode helps you manage incoming calls by recognising whether they are fax or voicecalls and dealing with them in one of the following ways:

    Faxes will be automatically received.Voice calls will start the F/T Ring to tell you to pick up the line. The F/T Ring is a fast double-ringmade by your machine.

    Manual 10

    Manual mode turns off all automatic answering functions unless you are using the BT Call Signfeature.

    To receive a fax in Manual mode, lift the handset of an external telephone. When you hear faxtones (short repeating beeps), press Fax Start and choose Receive . You can also use the FaxDetect feature to receive faxes by lifting a handset on the same line as the machine.

    External TAD 10

    External TAD mode lets an external answering device manage your incoming calls. Incomingcalls will be dealt with in one of the following ways:

    First, check the following.The machine’s power cord is connected correctly and the machine’s power switch is turned on.

    All of the protective parts have been removed.

    Paper is loaded correctly in the paper tray.

    The interface cables are securely connected to the machine and the computer, or the wirelessconnection is set up on both the machine and your computer.

    Cannot Detect You installed a new ink cartridge tooquickly and the machine did not

    detect it.

    Take out the new ink cartridge andreinstall it slowly and firmly until the

    cartridge lever lifts.(See Online User’s Guide.) An ink cartridge is not installed

    correctly.

    A used ink cartridge was reinstalled. Remove the used ink cartridge andinstall a new one.

    If you are using non Brother Originalink, the machine may not detect theink cartridge.

    Replace the cartridge with a BrotherOriginal ink cartridge. If the errormessage remains, contact Brothercustomer service or your localBrother dealer.

    The ink cartridge must be replaced. Replace the ink cartridge with a new,genuine Brother ink cartridge.

    The new ink cartridge has an airbubble.

    Slowly turn the ink cartridge so thatthe ink supply port is pointingdownward, and then reinstall thecartridge.

    The wrong Brother model inkcartridge was installed.

    Check the model numbers of the inkcartridges and install the correct inkcartridges. ( See Supplies on page 83 .)

    Cannot Detect Ink

    Volume

    If you are using non Brother Original

    ink, the machine may not detect theink volume.

    Replace the cartridge with a Brother

    Original ink cartridge. If the errormessage remains, contact Brothercustomer service or your localBrother dealer.

    Cannot Print

    Replace ink.

    One or more of the ink cartridgeshave reached the end of their life. Themachine will stop all print operations.While memory is available,monochrome faxes will be stored inthe memory. If a sending machinehas a colour fax, the machine's

    “handshake” will ask that the fax besent as monochrome.

    Ink Absorber Pad Full The ink absorber box or flushing boxis full. These components are

    periodic maintenance items that mayrequire replacement after a period oftime to ensure optimum performancefrom your Brother machine. Becausethese components are periodicmaintenance items, the replacementis not covered under the warranty.The need to replace these items andthe time period before replacement isdependent on the number of purgesand flushes required to clean the inksystem. These boxes acquire

    amounts of ink during the differentpurging and flushing operations. Thenumber of times a machine purgesand flushes for cleaning variesdepending on different situations. Forexample, frequently powering themachine on and off will causenumerous cleaning cycles since themachine automatically cleans itselfupon power up. The use ofnon-Brother ink may cause frequentcleanings because non-Brother inkcould cause poor print quality, whichis resolved by cleaning. The morecleaning the machine requires, thefaster these boxes will fill up.

    NOTERepairs resulting from the use ofnon-Brother supplies may not becovered under the stated productwarranty.

    The ink absorber box or flushing boxmust be replaced. Contact Brother

    customer service or your localBrother Authorised Service Centre tohave your machine serviced.

    Other reasons for cleaning are:

    1 After a paper jam has beencleared, the machineautomatically cleans itself beforethe next received fax page isprinted.

    2 The machine automatically cleansitself after sitting idle for more than30 days (infrequent use).

    3 The machine automatically cleansitself after ink cartridges of thesame colour have been replaced12 times.

    Media Error The memory card is either corrupted,incorrectly formatted, or there is aproblem with the memory card.

    Remove the memory card from themedia drive (slot) of the machine andformat it correctly.

    Put the card firmly into the slot againto make sure it is in the correctposition. If the error remains, checkthe media drive (slot) of the machineby inserting a working memory card.

    Media is Full. The memory card or USB flash driveyou are using already contains 999files.

    Your machine can save to yourmemory card or USB flash drive onlyif it contains less than 999 files.Delete unused files and try again.
