K. Summary of my Activities and Future Plans
Since being promoted to Senior Lecturer in May 2010, I have been working on a number of projects in the fields of Political-Religious Geography, Pilgrimage Studies, and the field of Environment and Tourism.
I also teach a number of core-courses in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, including the introductory undergraduate freshman course “Human Geography,” and I am currently co-supervising the thesis research of two MA students and four Ph.D. candidates.
As a modern social scientist, I believe in both individualism and cooperation, which is strongly reflected in my publications. I see the importance of publishing alone, supervising and co-authoring studies with my students (Sharon Ben Dahlia,
32
Keren Sagie-Tueta, Yael Zins, Roy Shtainvarz, and Tal Sharon), publishing with colleagues from within the University (Yoel Mansfeld, Nurit Kliot, Hezi Israeli, and Dan Malkinson) and from other institutions both inside Israel (Alon Gelbman, Nimrod Luz, and Arza Churchman) and abroad (Geoffrey Wall, Jay Gatrell, and Biljana Petrevska), and working in larger groups (Deborah Shmueli and Michal Ben-Gal). I will continue to maintain this diversity and balance in my work as a philosophy in which I strongly believe.
My primary focuses of research are as follows:
1. Religious Geography and Pilgrimage Studies
Over the past five years, I have conducted numerous studies regarding phenomena of religious geography in Christianity, Judaism, Mormonism, and the Baha’i faith. My research in this field has yielded a number of articles on the Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, and Baha’i religions.
With the support of an Israel Science Foundation research grant I received in partnership with Deborah Shmueli (2009-12) to explore “Spatial Deviation – the Establishment of New Religious Sites in Israel’s Landscape.” We have authored a number of articles on the political aspects of religious sites in Israel. These articles were accepted for publication in leading geographical journals, including Cities, Applied Geography, and Tijdschrift Voor Economische En Sociale Geografi.
I have also co-authored two chapters in outstanding volumes on these topics. The first chapter, “Tourism and Religion: Spiritual Journeys and Their Consequences” (2015, with Geoffrey Wall), which appears in The Changing World Religion Map: Sacred Places, Identities, Practices and Politics (New York: Springer) edited by prominent geographer Stanley Brunn, is expected to be a leading source on the Geography of Religion. The second chapter, “Studying Jewish Pilgrimage in Israel" (2015, with Nimrod Luz), which appears in International Perspectives on Pilgrimage Studies: Itineraries, Gaps and Obstacles (New York: Routledge) edited by John Eade and Albera Dionigi, is expected to be a leading source in the field of Pilgrimage Studies.
This area of research considers the sociopolitical context of various religious sites in Israel and their spatial ramifications on sociopolitical discourse. I regard political context as an inseparable aspect of my current research on this subject, and I plan to conduct additional studies on other relevant sites, spaces, and concepts. One of my Ph.D. students is in the midst of conducting a study on current developments in the City of David in Jerusalem.
2. Environment and Tourism I recently concluded a broad, long-term study of the development of
sustainable tourism in the Lake Hula region, funded by the Jewish National Fund (with a three-year research budget of $106,000). As products of this research, I published two articles in the leading tourism journals of Tourism Geographies and Tourism Management. I continue to regard the environment as an inseparable component of my current and future research agenda, and I am currently exploring possible collaborative projects with an eye toward continuing my work in this field. In this spirit, I am presently engaged in formulating a research proposal aimed at developing digital methods for calculating the carrying capacities of tourist sites ("Calculating and Planning Carrying Capacity: From Academic Model to Smart Phone App – A Touristic Waze").

Also in this field, I have been teaching an undergraduate course titled “Introduction to Leisure, Tourism, and Environment,” as well as two graduate courses dealing with tourism development through tourism and World Heritage Sites. In conjunction with one of my Ph.D. students, I am currently conducting a research project (together with Prof. Israeli) on “Strategies for Management of Archaeological-Heritage Sites: Conservation and Development.”
Overall, I regard the environment-tourism nexus as a field with great research potential, and one which I intend to continue exploring in the years to come. 3. Mobilities and the Geography of Walking
I have recently applied for several research grants (together with Prof. Kliot) to explore the subject of walking in Israel (including an application to the Israel Science Foundation) and have already been awarded a Ministry of Tourism grant on the "Touristification of the Israel National Trail.” I am also currently supervising graduate research on this topic.
I have recently completed writing an initial article on the motives for walking in Israel. This article will be the first in a series of articles dealing with the geography of walking, which is a subject that has thus far received little attention in the geographical literature. In an effort to continue developing this topic, one of my Ph.D. students (together with Prof. Kliot) is also currently conducting a study on hiking the Israel National Trail.
In this area, as in my other fields of research, my intention is to continue combining research, undergraduate teaching, and graduate research advising.
My plan is to continue working primarily, but not exclusively, in these three areas and to continue combining theoretical and applied approaches in my geographical and environmental research.
