Interests: Design and discovery of small molecules with biological activity. A particular focus is laid on novel and unusual mechanisms of action, on antiinfective compounds, and on compounds with a potential application in regenerative medicine and synthetic biology. Core competencies and methods: Rational design of novel ligands and inhibitors, based on the structures of target proteins,

natural ligands or substrates, and other available knowledge. Development of screening and assay systems, particularly for enzymatic activities. Medium-throughput screening with optical (UV-VIS, fluorescence, etc.), chromatographic

(HPLC-UV, HPLC-fluorescence) and mass-spectrometric readout. Heterologous expression, purification and characterization of target proteins Synthetic organic chemistry, ranging from small to medium-sized (peptidic) molecules.

This includes parallel organic synthesis, peptide synthesis, all methods of compound characterization (state-of-the-art equipment for NMR, HPLC-MS, circular dichroism, combustion analysis, etc.).
