SCHOOL

SHELTER

CONSERVATION

This BSC project was completed within one year, and was my community orientated building and consists of a site investigation straight through to com-plete drawings and designs. I researched the growing trends within school design and decided that sustain-able schools is one which the Welsh government is moving towards. I identified the emerging themes for this approach and found that reduced fossil fuel demands, alternative methods of transport, site bio-diversity, sustainable drainage systems, social responsibility, and eco-nomic sustainability were the most important. I was going to implement all of these into my building design to create a building which would satisfy all of these within a modern sustainable school design.

This BSC Year two project was to design a glazed shel-ter on the Plas Coch Cam-pus. The shelter is intended to be a main focal point for the university but also be functional for the students to use. I have chosen to de-sign a shelter which covers the engineering blocks of the university, this is because this area currently doesn’t have any shelter. I also chose this because it is a very busy circulation route for many of the students within the university. I designed the shelter to curve around the existing buildings to break up the form which these buildings have. This means the shelter can curve up and down the other buildings, and makes the shelter a lot more interesting to look at, providing the focal point which was required within the brief.

This BSC six month project was the development and adaptation of four mid-nine-teenth century terraced houses which is within the Parc Genedlaethol Eryri (Snowdonia national park). The houses are not listed but there is limitations as to what can be achieved with these buildings due to planning constraints within the national park. I decided that I wanted to keep as much of the character of these buildings as possible and due to the changing de-mographics of people within the park wanted to create a youth shared housing design. I also wanted to improve the thermal efficiency wher-ever possible within these buildings, as the national park is aiming to have more sustainable properties within the future.

SCHOOLDETAILAs the school was going to be environmentally friendly as possible i have carefully detailed this building to show this concept. I have achieved Passivhaus stand-ard detailing, eliminating thermal breaks within the building envelope. This works by having a 200mm insulated (Duvet Layer) and then an internal structural zone which includes insu-lation between the timber structure. Airtightness is key to obtain Passivhaus certification and this is achieved using airtightness tape at various junctions highlighted in these details. I have chosen to clad the building using untreated FSC certified douglas fir cladding to eliminate harm-ful VOC’s emitted by the building. I have used Pas-sivhaus certified Passivhaus curtain panels , which also have Brise Soleil to stop the building from overheating during the summer months , but allow the low winter sun penetration into the building. This then heats the concrete flooring which creates a thermal mass meaning less energy de-mand required for heating of the building.
