embroidery on paper

We are hearing consumer and designer buzz about combin-ing stitching and card making. Embroidery on cards can

be as elegant, whimsical, or indie as you want it to be. Popularfor years in England, this technique is migrating around theglobe now that papers are inexpensive and available, andstitchers are looking for something different. Stitch with finethreads like Kreinik Cord, Very Fine Braid, Japan #1 or Blend-ing Filament through punched holes. Tools like a punch pen (orTailor’s Awl) and a computer mouse pad can get you started.

Designer Erica Fortgens creates patterns, books and stencilsthat show you how to easily create stunning embroideredcards, tags and other paper projects. The baby themed giftcard above is from the book “Basics of Embroidery on Paper”(Erica Fortgens, www.ericafortgens.nl), and also appears inthe May 2009 issue of Kreinik’s Reflections e-newsletter.

SEWING, QUILTING, COSTUMING

“The Kreinik thread advantage is that these threads can go athigher speeds and the sewer does not need to adjust tensions.People hate to sew with metallics, but after they try ours, theyare hooked on the possibilities.”—Doug Kreinik

We hear it often: “I hate metallics for machine embroi-dery...They break too easily and I hate adjusting my ma-

chine.” How can something so beautiful cause so much angst? They don’t have to—simply choose a better metallic thread.

Kreinik has the thread that will make you fall in love withmetallics for machine embroidery. Sewers that have sworn offmetallics are now buying boxes of cones. The threads truly makecreative lives easier.CHOOSE FROM:

• Metallized pure silvergimp threads: Paperbase, laminated withsilver, wound arounda nylon core. Anti-microbial, strong, andcan run at speeds of1,200 rpm. Available inbrilliant silver, gold, whitegold and antique gold, on 1000mand 5000m cones.• Fine Twist threadsNylon and polyester. Great strength and shimmering effects.Spread out more than gimps which are round. Run in a machine at800-1000 rpm. Comes in 18 colors, 1000m and 3000m cones.• Fashion Twist threads100% polyester with a laminate of silver. Anti-microbial and en-zyme resistant. Run in a sewing machine at 800-1000 rpm. Avail-able in 12 shades, on 1000m and 3000m cones.

Q: What’s the secret to making metallicswork for me on my sewing machine?A: A quality thread, of course, and the needle: usea 14, 16 or 18 Topstitch needle. You may alsoneed to skip some of your machine’s guides. “Becreative in your threading by using the leastamount of twisting and turning of the threads,”says teacher Elaine Gilmore.

Q: Can I use them on any sewing machine?Y: Yes, on any brand of sewing machine, serger, digital embroidery machine, or long-arm machine.

Q: What is the importance of anti-microbialand enzyme resistant qualities?A: Today textiles can be infused with silver to pre-vent fungus from forming (in Iraq, soldiers wearmilitary clothing containing silver). Enzyme-resis-tance means that because of the silver base, themetallic does not wane if you bleach it.

Q: Care instructions?A: Wash in 104 F, iron on low heat, can be drycleaned. The Fashion Twist can be used withbleach and washed at 122 F.

Q: How can I buy these threads?A: Order cones by calling 1-800-624-1928, or con-tact one of our distributors: Checkers 1-800-537-1060, Gammill 1-800-659-8224, NotionsMarketing 1-800-748-0250.

Want to make some jaws drop? Stitch your next project—or teachyour customers to stitch—on silk gauze. Silk gauze is a silk

needlepoint canvas available in “normal” to incredibly diminutivesizes like 49-count. Don’t let the word “silk” make you think it istoo expensive; it simply means that silk gauze is a strong, qualitycanvas. It is made of 100% pure silk fibers in an interlock weave. This type of embroidery can be traced back generations, like 1870s lit-

tle-girls’ samplers and 1970s dollhouse decorations. Today, you stitch onsilk gauze to create little masterpieces like jewelry, buttons, dimensionalframed embroidery (think: layers of gauze), and to-scale miniatures.

KNITTING/CROCHET

When and why should you use silk thread?Silk is a strong, beautiful, elegant, historic, andnatural fiber for fine techniques like crossstitch/counted thread, samplers, crazy quilting,Hardanger, needlepoint, beading, crochet, filet crochet, micromacrame, and beadknitting. The colors are richer, the sheen isbetter than cotton or wool, the fiber is strongerthan nylon, and they are much easier to usethan rayon. Kreinik has 3 types of silk thread:

• Kreinik Silk Mori®: a Premium Grade 3A, 6-strand spun silk with a creamy lustre. Perfect for begin-ners. Separate the strands and recombine as needed forvarious stitches.• Kreinik Silk Serica®: a 3-ply twisted filament silk idealfor bead knitting, micromacrame, crochet. • Kreinik Silk Bella™: a finely twisted, thin filament silkfor adding the finest details.

Silk Gauze FinishingSilk gauze, because of its diminutive characteristics,

provides a new world of finishing options that are alsoa fraction of the cost of finishing larger needleworkpieces. Look for companies offering jewelry findings, miniature ready-made frames, easels, and ornament frames that are perfect for silk gauze finish-ing. The other day I received a call fromone of our vendors: “We are no

longer going to mail out invoice. Do youwant FAX or e-mail?” In these interest-ing economic times, it is definitely smartto save in areas where new technologyallows savings. In May, we too will

begin sending invoices via FAX or email when possible. Here are the advantages:• Immediate awareness of what has been shipped • The ability to price items before they arrive • Opportunity to pre-sell • Chance to align for payment more quickly

Email, with all of the good and bad, has quickly changedthe market, becoming a necessary form of communication. My daughter, the actress, almost always uses email for hercommunications, along with Twitter, Facebook, YouTube,Blackberry and IM’ing. Communications are changing.Last month Kreinik began placing video streaming onYouTube, covering interesting topics from tradeshows likehow to use the Kreinik Corder. We also began a Twitterservice for the latest yarn, thread and design news.

If you are not “there,” you may want to rethink your op-position to getting connected. The new market demands itand it will not disappear. Shoppers want information be-fore they buy, want instantaneous information as they movefrom shopping locations quickly, and even want to alertother local needle Twitterers of sales or sightings of inter-esting designers or celebs in the yarn and thread world.

To attract the “new thread and yarn junkie,” change iscalled for and everyone has a part to play in attracting newcustomers as well as keeping the tried-and-true customer.

— Doug Kreinik
