BLOG / CUSTOMER PROFILE TEMPLATE

A customer profile, buyer persona or customer avatar as they are sometimes known, is a fictional character that builds a picture of your ideal / target customer.

Your customer profile / avatars should give you ideas on how you should talk to particular customers, what you should be talking about and what you should offer by way of products and services.

STEP ONE - DEFINE YOUR IDEAL CUSTOMER

start by keeping it broad. Who is your ideal customer? Are you targeting businesses or customers?wholesale or retail? small business or corporate? freelancers or agencies? male or female?

Who do you want to talk to with your website? who do you want to sell to?

STEP TWO - RESEARCHING YOUR CUSTOMER PROFILE

Now it’s time to drill down and get more information on your broad group in step one.

One of the easiest places to also start your research could be Facebook. If you already have an established business and a Facebook page, You can get going using Facebook insights to gather your research information.

Here are some research elements you can get from Facebook to define each of your personas:

• Location – Where does this person live?• Excluding Location – Where they don’t live.• Age – What is the age range of this profile?• Gender – What is the gender profile?• Interests – What interests this customer?

• Language – What languages do they speak?• Favourite Websites – Why type of sites do they visit?• Education – To what level is this customer educated?• Job – What is their industry and job title?• Income – What is the income range of this profile?• Relationship – single, married, divorced, widowed etc.?• Buying Motivation - What are their reasons for buying your product?• Buying Concerns - What are they worried about when buying your product?

These questions are there to help you understand your customers better, so you can communicate with them more effectively and target your marketing and sales precisely with your website content.

You don’t have to answer all these questions, just the ones you think will be beneficial in helping you market to your customers better. Have a look at your business and ask yourself what information you actually require, to help you achieve your end goal – to sell more, get more leads, etc. If you don’t need it, don’t include it.

IF YOU’RE NEW IN BUSINESS

The above methods may work for already established businesses, but when you’re starting out, looking at your biggest competitors is a great way to get started in researching your target market.

List your top five competitors and then go on facebook and then try and answer these questions using your competitors….remember, if they’re buying from them, then they will buy it from you.

STEP THREE - BRING IT ALL TOGETHER

Once you’ve got your research done, it’s time to put a face to your customer avatar and make it as close to real as you can. Generate a name for your avatar using an online name generator and use images on Google Images as long as your customer profiles are for internal use only.

Using the steps above above I’ve completed one customer profile for my business - minted creative. Here’s what I came up with:

MY CUSTOMER AVATAR

Name: Annabel Princewill Age: 25 – 38

– Just starting out in business or hasn’t quite gotten over the fear of starting

– Price Conscious and doesn’t have a large budget for one-on-one consulting services but is willing to learn things through focused workshops that help them get clear around certain parts of the business

– Loves learning through workshops, ebooks and other people’s experiences. Looking for a step by step guidance to starting her online marketing experience.

Significant challenges include:

– How to set up systems to streamline her marketing to suit her very limited time – as she’s wearing so many hats at the moment

– Finding and attracting the right clients / customers so she’s making money NOW

– Creating perfect offering for her business that will SELL

– How to use her blog as a platform to showcase her personality and PULL in clients

Now it’s your turn…create a picture of your ideal customer with all the information you’ve gatheredfrom steps one and two.

This customer profile is what we’re going to use to craft copy for your website that will attract more of your ideal customers.

It will also give you a better idea of how to speak to this customer with your content on social media as well as how to present your services and product and the correct price range that will serve this customer.
