Customary Linear Measurement
G5.4M.C4.PO3. I can choose the appropriate unit of measurement for any problem.
Essential Questions:
What are the units for measuring length in the customary system? How do we know which unit to use?
There are 2 different systems of
measurement:
customary and metric
The customary system is
primarily used in the United
States
The metric system is used in most of the rest
of the world
Today I can choose the appropriate unit for measuring
length and distances within the customary system.
There are four units for measuring length in the customary system:
Inches Feet Yards Miles
Inches are the smallest unit in the customary system. One
inch is about the width of your thumb.
Inches are measured with
a ruler
Here are some objects that would be
appropriate to measure in inches:
length of a pencil height of a small flower
length of a paper clip
A foot is almost as long as a piece of notebook paper
There are 12 inches in one foot
Here are some objects that would be
appropriate to measure in feet:length of a
carheight of a person
height of your classroom door
length of a couch
height of a tall tree
QuickTime™ and aGIF decompressor
are needed to see this picture.
When you hold your arms out at both sides and measure from fingertip to fingertip, that is about the same as one yard.
There are 3 feet in one yard
There are 36 inches in one yard
Here are some objects that would be
appropriate to measure in yards:length of a
swimming pool that is used for
competitiondistance from your classroom to
the cafeteria
length of a football field
height of a 10 story building
A mile is the largest unit for length in the
customary system. Miles are used for very long
distances.There are
1,760 yards in a mile
There are 5,280 feet in a mile
Here are some distances that would be
appropriate to measure in miles:
distance from your house to the mall
distance from Tucson, AZ to Disneyland
distance from Desert Willow to the U of A
Inches Feet Yards Miles
In Fourth Grade You Measure!
Your Turn!
What is the appropriate unit to use to measure each object or distance?
Closure:
On your slate, write one example of an object/distance
you can measure with each customary unit of length. Be
prepared to share!
