Unique has been chartering successfully in Fiji from 2013 through until mid 2016 beforeshe was taken out of charter as a private vessel for a family trip. The vessel had rave reviewswith many repeat customers. For the first year and a half the owners chartered with up to 8guests and 2 crew. However, to improve the customer experience and to assist the crew, theylater reduced to 6 guests and three crew. The safe manning certificate for Unique requiresjust two crew – one with a Deck Watch Rating or equivalent and one with a Class 6commercial.

Unique won the 2013 Aon Fiji Tourism Award in the category of Unique Accomodation.

The catamaran Unique is custom designed. The hulls are round bilge with an inbuilt spraychine on each side of the hull. CONSTRUCTIONCONSTRUCTION

• The hull and deck and cabin structures are composite GRP using epoxycomposite below the waterline and orthothelic polyester for most of the otherlaminates.

• Core materials are high-density foam and cedar below the waterline.

• Carbon fibre and Kevlar have been used in high load areas.

• The hulls are stiffened with Kevlar and carbon fibre stringers, ring frames andplywood bulkheads.

• Watertight bulkheads are fitted fore and aft of each hull.

• Exterior surfaces have been fitted and faired to a high standard and are finishedin 2 pack products.

UNIQUE'S HISTORYUNIQUE'S HISTORY

Built by Gavin Cooke in Christchurch, NZ as a personal vessel, he sold to Graeme and NigelSkeggs in 2011 where the vessel was completed and rigged at Dickson Boatbuilders inNelson, NZ.

Gavin is an experienced sailor so it was important for the vessel to have good sailingqualities. It also had to be a very liveable vessel and strong as Gavin’s plans includedcruising the entire New Zealand coast. Being a “Southern Man” Gavin was very mindful ofthe foul weather that can be served up around New Zealand’s coast so the vessel had to bebuilt to cope with whatever came. Plenty of deck space and in particular a generous afterdeck cockpit is devoted to alfresco entertaining.

The ability to charter the vessel also came into the planning. Ventilation throughout thevessel was important and being a boat builder’s own boat, the vessel was to beuncomplicated and easy to maintain with good access to all areas. Workmanship is withoutcompromise and the finish is to superyacht standard. A tribute to a true craftsman.

Gavin has actively involved in boat design and building since 1964. Over this period, 30 ofhis innovative designs from his extensive portfolio have been successfully commercialised,including the 36 ft catamaran “Freedom Machine”, leading to the production ofapproximately 2000 vessels, a number of which have gone to offshore clients. Gavin canalso add to his comprehensive abilities, New Zealand titleholder in yachting, and powerboating in both Vee bottoms and tunnel hull catamarans. Gavin is the only New Zealanderwho has designed, built, driven and sailed both powerboats and yachts to achieve Nationaltitles.

Once launched in 2012, Unique sailed to Fiji where she was chartered extensively in thehigh end market by Nigel and Susan Skeggs who come from a superyacht background. The


charter business is a Fiji Registered Company called Unique Charters Limited and the vesselis Duty paid and registered in Fiji.

Recently Unique was taken out of charter where Nigel and Susan lived on board for 10months sailing 7000nm around the Pacific with their 5 and 7 year old daughters. Thevessel has recently returned to Fiji where she is now lying and up for sale as boat only or as agoing concern with the company and all marketing assets included. With the new electricdrive, battery and solar system on board the family did this trip using only 3,000 litres ofdiesel.

Unique is set up for easy single handed sailing with all halyards, reefing lines and sailcontrol lines led under the bridge deck to the 2 x electric cockpit winches.

A powerful and fun yacht to sail, Unique has proven to be very forgiving and strong inadverse weather conditions, a fast passage maker and an incredibly safe offshore vessel.
