CASE HISTORIES

Our clients have enjoyed measurable improvements because of our innovative communications strategies and design solutions.

ALbERTA bALLETAREA OF EXPERTISE: Marketing/Media Relations/Promotions/Advertising/Media Sponsorship

CHALLENGE: Providing marketing and media relations for the performance of Joni Mitchell’s The Fiddle and The Drum, which launched the Cultural Olympiad in mid-january 2010 at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

RESULT: Curve executed a rigorous and highly visible campaign that cut through the media clutter of pre-Olympic Vancouver to achieve massive awareness for the monumental collaborative work by joni Mitchell and jean Grand-Maitre, opening the Cultural Olympiad. Curve received commendations from the VANOC Communications Department for the incredible amount of garnered coverage and profile for the ballet in lead up to the Opening Night performance.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Joni Mitchell’s The Fiddle and The Drum is a landmark collaboration between the Canadian songstress and Alberta Ballet’s Artistic Director jean Grand-Maitre. As the ballet quickly earned consideration as a national treasure of expression, it was only suiting that the acclaimed work open the 2010 Cultural Olympiad. Additional gravity was added to the occasion, as Grand-Maitre was also choreographer for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

THE NATIONAL bALLET OF CANADAAREA OF EXPERTISE: Media Relations

CHALLENGE: To garner visibility and profile through an aggressive media relations campaign for the presentation of the National Ballet of Canada’s classical ballet, Swan Lake at The Centre in Vancouver for the Performing Arts.

RESULT: Curve landed preview coverage for Swan Lake and the renowned ballet company in the arts section of the Georgia Straight, Vancouver Sun, Province, and WestEnder, as well as an extensive amount of coverage in community papers, TV outlets and radio stations, coupled with garnering impressive post-show coverage, including a double-page spread in the Vancouver Sun. The show was unbelievably successful, selling out its Vancouver engagements.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Canada’s premier dance company has performed for more than 10 million people around the globe. The National Ballet performs annual fall, winter and summer seasons plus The Nutcracker. Curve was secured to garner immense coverage for the company’s tour into Vancouver in the fall of 2006.

“Curve Communications is first rate! They perform with such high standards and I was very impressed. From the beginning of the campaign, (for Joni Mitchell’s The Fiddle and The Drum) they strived to understand the exact nature of my production in order to find its true audience. Curve then offered me and Alberta Ballet’s marketing department a well thought out and efficient promotional strategy. Curve followed through with surgical precision. Best of all, they worked extremely hard to ensure Alberta Ballet got the results we needed to reach the Vancouver market. It was a pleasure collaborating with their team, and I look forward to working with them again.”

CASE HISTORIES

PERFORMING ARTSAREA OF EXPERTISE: Media Relations

CHALLENGE: To execute a number of aggressive media relations’ campaigns for a mixed repertoire of classical, jazz, and contemporary music performers over multiple seasons, while boosting ticket sales at North America’s premier performance venue – The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts.

RESULT: Working with The Chan Centre on a number of diverse musical performances, Curve consistently achieved high-profile coverage for an incredible array of events, including The Chan Centre’s celebratory 10th anniversary performance, Kronos Quartet, Tanya Tagaq, Louis Lortie, Jets Overhead, Bela Fleck, and Hey Ocean, among others. The amount of garnered media relations’ has led to increased ticket sales and sell-out performances.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia (UBC) has earned an international reputation for its striking design and stellar acoustics. bLACKbIRD THEATRE COMPANyAREA OF EXPERTISE: Marketing/Media Relations/Promotions/Advertising/Media Sponsorship

CHALLENGE: To provide marketing and media relations for the small, highly respected theatre company’s production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, while raising the profile and visibility through an aggressive rebranding and communications campaign.

RESULT: Compelling design, tactical allocation of a limited marketing budget, comprehensive publicity coverage, and a brilliant performance resulted in record-breaking box office figures for the theatre company. The final two weeks of the production were completely sold-out, resulting in added shows, while putting Blackbird in a wonderful position to mount their next project.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Blackbird Theatre is a critically acclaimed, award-winning company who approached Curve with a goal to raise its profile and visibility through revitalization of its brand identity, targeted marketing and media relations campaign. The company is dedicated to the presentation of classical (and often apocryphal) work. Blackbird Theatre recognized the direction arts funding was headed in the province, identified the need to make a change to their revenue streams, and concluded that the best method for accomplishing these goals was to utilize Curve’s recognized marketing expertise.

bERKSHIRE CHORAL FESTIVALAREA OF EXPERTISE: Event Marketing/Promotions/Advertising/Media Relations

CHALLENGE: Facilitating marketing, advertising buys, and media relations for a world-renowned Choral Festival who perform in major cities across Canada, including Vancouver and Montreal.

RESULT: Curve’s strong media relations, advertising, and promotional campaign meant ticket sales surpassed expectations for the 2007 and 2008 Vancouver engagements, as well as for the 2009 Montreal performance. The same success and profile is projected for the Choral Festival in Montreal in july 2010.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Berkshire Choral Festival is an annual series of world-class choral events held in cultural capitals across the globe. In 2007 and 2008, Curve worked with the Festival for its inaugural performances in Vancouver. When the Festival changed its Canadian location to Montreal in 2009, Berkshire continued to enlist Curve’s communications needs to promote participation in the Festival by local singers, while increasing awareness for the Festival and thus selling tickets to the final Choral Festival performance.
