T~~~~'s c~~~~~~ has taken on a job with a difference.

While moored at Teop Harbour in PNG the ship was approached by a local resident who lold of a meta l device he believed was a bomb. It was on a bcach to the north of the harbour.

On inspection the Australians found ordnance a metre long by 0.25 of a metre wide.

h had no prot rusions and no obvious markings. At low tide it was complelelyexposc:d.

The device was thought to be from World War " .

RAN personnel marked the bomb with a red nag and working through MINDIVFOR and HQAST called the headquarters of the PNGDF to have it rendered safe.

Trek to Wilpena M~~eo,~an ~Ou ssa~~r; DEC HAINEUX have taken pan in aagroelling mountain trek as panofa team building exercise in preparation for the rigorous Submarine Sea Trials Program.

The newly-formed crew hi ked almost 40km to Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Rangers nonhof Adelaide.

Two Army personnel provided logistic suppon during Ihe five day journey and the tale nts of adventurctrainingleader, Captain Kit Marshall and parame d ic. Pr ivate Amanda Pat t erso n . proved invaluable.

LS Colin von Rechenberg said the intense nature of the trek proved to be a testing time for the less fit members of the crew.

"Fou r sailors threat-

encouragi ng debriefing by CAPT Marshall and some kind words from the Chief of the Boal persuaded them to continue." he said,

Despite an eJ(te nsive brief by the adventure training team leader. one group of sailors became geographicall y confused unlif they were tracked down by CAPT Marshall.

Many comparisons were made by the crew between the obslacles encountered on the hike and Ih e disciplines required as a submariner.

" It reinforced perseverance. fm:usand achievemelll," LS von Rechenberg said.

"The CO was extremely satisfied that the expedition achieved its aims of bui lding teamwork and morale." he said,
