Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ -

I am very pleased to tell you about the progress that has been made in our Diocesan Cursillo Movement. A group of Cursillistas has written many of the intentions that were recently used at masses throughout our diocese. In March, we put on a Commitment workshop and a Sponsorship workshop. In May, the Canton Ultreya Center hosted a Grand Ultreya which welcomed Cursillis-tas from the Canton, Warren and Youngstown Ultreya Centers. Our Cursillo movement was fea-tured in two articles published in the Catholic Exponent over the past few months… and we have also been listed in the Diocese of Youngstown Directory for the first time in our history!

This is an exciting time… our movement is growing again and things are happening!

If you have been away from the movement, we miss you and encourage you to come back. Join us at Ultreya. Come listen to our Professors give their talks during their Formation meetings at Our Lady of the Afflicted Shrine at 517 Belle Vista in Youngstown. Participate in the School of Leaders meetings. Bring your

family to the annual picnic on August 15th, at St. Luke in Boardman (where it’s been held for the past few years).

Whenever you can come, we would love to see you. We are here to share your Fourth Day with you. Guaranteed you’ll be welcomed, get a big hug, and will feel the fellowship and love of Christ. We have a wonderful Cursillo community.

We are still accepting candidate applications for the Men’s weekend as well as Team and candidate applications for the Women’s weekend in January. Please submit your completed applications to Gina Fire. Her contact information is: Ph. 330-792-4844 Her Email: [email protected]@[email protected]@yahoo.com Also, please consider joining us for set up, kitchen help and tear down for the upcoming Men’s week-end. We simply can’t do it without your help. If you remember how powerful your experience was when you lived your Cursillo weekend, please help provide that same experience for the candidates who will be on this Men’s weekend. Any help you can give would be wonderful Palanca.

May God Bless you. DeColores! Bill Joyce, Lay Director

DDDDear Cursillo Community,

It has been more than ten years now since I first had the pleasure of becoming an Assistant Spiritual Director of the Cursillo Movement. These years have truly passed by so quickly and have brought me closer to Christ, especially because of Christ’s presence within all the people I have shared His love with. After a couple of months of prayer, meditation and contemplation, it has become clear to me that it is time to step down as

Assistant Spiritual Director.

The Cursillo movement was the motivation that set me onto the path of understanding Christ’s presence in my

personal life and that path on my 4th day eventually led me to the Deaconate.

Because of Cursillo, most of the time my life is joyful and hopeful because of my faith in Jesus. And because of Cursillo, I can truly say I know Christ is my close friend. I can also

say that I was led to the ministry of the Deaconate because of Cursillo.

Thank you, thank you for all that you are doing for the honor and glory of God!!

And thank you for all that you have done for me!!

Because of Jesus, Deacon Ron Bunofsky

TTTThrough the foresight and generosity of John Masternick, a fund was established

for the Youngstown Cursillo Movement upon John’s passing last year. This bequest has created an endowment and the interest from it can be used to help reimburse some of the expenses incurred when putting on the Cursillo weekends. John was a long time Cursillista, having made Weekend #1 here in 1964. Cursillo held a special place in his heart, and he wished to provide some funding that would assist us in our ministry of putting on future weekends. We wish to thank his wife Dorothy and all of the Masternick family for their continued support and generosity toward the Cursillo

movement. May God bless you!

From our Assistant Spiritual Director: TWO KINDS OF STRENGTH We all look to God for Strength in times of trouble. There are two aspects to strength:

1.) Strength to endure, and 2.) strength to overcome and change.

Most of us have prayed for the ability to endure a trying situation… and we found support and we held up through

it. Our very faith in God sustained us and carried us through a difficult time. That’s endurance. We were certain

that “God is our refuge and our strength… a very present help in trouble.” Psalms 46:1

Most of us have not only prayed for strength to endure but also for the strength to overcome.

Endurance through trying times shows strength of our character, but we cannot let endurance alone be the focus

of our thoughts. We pray for endurance; we must also pray for transformation. We can no longer look at our life

or condition and just say “ I will endure this.” Instead, we need to say “These challenges are temporary. I know

that God has transforming power and that power can bring real change, real blessings at any time, in any circum-

stance.”

To endure is good… to transform (change circumstance) is the way of greater strength.

Yes, we need strength to endure—but we also need strength to know and to believe that nothing is hopeless…

nothing is impossible to change. We also need strength to wait for God… to believe God’s power is transforming

everything we experience into something new and wonderful.

One of my favorite Bible verses is Isaiah 40:31. “Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength. They

shall mount up their wings like eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not be faint.”

This verse refers to strength, not just to endure, but to soar! And the secret to receiving soaring strength is to

wait, wait, wait, wait for the Lord to act.

When we pray and wait on the Lord, we not only are given strength to endure—but this goes further– it lifts us up

on wings of faith—it brings us new abundant life and joy.

When you feel you’re not able to do something... or you’re pushed and pressed by circumstance… when you feel

limited as a human being… you can lift your mind and spirit by remembering this line from Phillipians 4:13 “ I can

do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Our strength does not lie with our willpower to endure. When we remember Christ’s

strength lies within us and it never runs out, we can do all things through Christ who is

our strength. This strength of God within us is waiting to be used to transform… to

change ourselves and the world.

Because of Jesus,

To our Cursillo Community,

We are very excited to be serving as Kitchen Co-Chairs for the upcoming Men’s weekend. We know that without you, and your prayers and your assistance we are

nothing. We need our kitchen to be a joyful Christian Community in Action!

Please, pray first and then come and help us out in the kitchen. We are looking for

help all weekend long. We would appreciate anyone who may volunteer to head up the decorating of the napkins, tables and our special Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon meal. We are also hoping someone would volunteer to run things for boom

so that we can get the kitchen cleaned and supplies stored away as soon as possible. We need cooks and of course any donations are gratefully accepted.

Please come and join us – do palanca – and help build our community!

Now that we have added the Cursillistas from the Canton Ultreya Center to our mailing list, we

are up to 2,300 newsletters that are mailed out. Frankly, that’s a lot of printing, assembly and

folding !

We need to get the newsletters out in a timely manner, and do it more efficiently and more effectively through e-

mail. There are many advantages to getting the Newsletter in this way: We will be able to

save paper; We can reduce our costs for postage; and it won’t take as long to “get the news

out.” You will receive the newsletter immediately. Another advantage of email is that you

will be able to see the newsletter in the color format in which it was created, as it was meant

to be read. You will be able to see photographs of your friends in full color, and be able to

share them with others.

You can read the current newsletter as well as view old newsletters that have been posted on our website:

School of Leaders meets Wednesday, June 16 at 7 PM at

St. Luke's School Music Room, 5325 South Avenue, Boardman

School of Leaders is placing a particular focus this year on helping to implement our pastoral plan. Among our near term goals is to increase participation and attendance at Cursillo activities and events. Specifically, we initiated a Special All Souls' Liturgy during a November Ultreya, which was well attended and well received. As a result, we are evaluating other opportunities which might surface for a similar theme Ultreya.

We held both Cursillo Leadership and Commitment Workshops in March at St. Pius. Cursillo Leaders from both Youngstown and Pittsburgh presented the Workshop material. At the conclusion of the Workshop, we attended the Saturday Vigil Mass with Father Bill Loveless as our celebrant.

A team of former rectors acted in sub-committee under the leadership of Nancy Layko to create a written formal outline for the Fourth Day Talk, which until now, had to be written and prepared without benefit of a good outline. We believe this new outline will allow for an easier, more thorough, and more consistent Fourth Day presentation.

As an outreach initiative, School of Leaders held our April meeting in Warren. We hope to schedule a meeting in Canton later this year. We received excellent feedback and ideas from the Warren Center as to how we might better communi-cate and involve Cursillistas who live in Trumbull County.

A key theme which has arisen is a need for clear and frequent communication, made even more important by the recent merger with the Canton Center. We need to utilize the high speed, ease, and low cost of email, yet continue to communi-cate effectively to those without computers. You can help.

The cost of printing and mailing 2,300 Cursillo newsletters is approximately $500. Thanks to dedicated volunteers who fold and label the newsletter, and to our generous benefactor who donates paper and printing, our actual cost is about $250. However, this is a significant portion of our annual budget.

If you have an e-mail account, please share it with us and receive all of your Cursillo information- newsletters, announcements, Bible Vigils, Team Formation - via e-mail. This is the fastest and cheapest way to communi-cate to a large number of people. You'll get your Cursillo information fast, you will save us postage and printing costs, and you'll be helping the environment. We will not share your account with anyone. All Cursillo informa-tion is sent via "blind carbon copy" and in a group designation, so your e-mail address is protected. You can send an e-mail to [email protected] with the subject listed as Cursillo Email Address and we will commence

email communication.

If you don't have e-mail, we are rededicating ourselves to better and more frequent printed and mailed communication. If enough people opt for the email option, we can better afford more frequent mailings. E-mail news and printed news will be identical.

Please join us for School of Leaders on June 16 at St. Luke's in Boardman. I f you have any input for the

School, send me an e-mail at: [email protected] or call me at (330) 502-7239.
