RESEARCH
Topics
Green Infrastructure Sustainable landscape practices: focus on the integration of sustainable landscape practices at multiple scales and across contexts with an emphasis on ecological and cultural considerations. Focus within highly built areas is on interstitial spaces.

Green Infrastructure for urban climate adaptation: Multi‐scalar approach to identify opportunities for implementation across land and building surfaces in North America with focus on transferability to the Middle East.
Landscape Planning and Green Infrastructure: Integration of land‐use planning and landscape character assessment at the regional scale into zoning and master planning for rural and semi‐rural areas for ecological conservation and sustainable development.
Urban agriculture: Urban agriculture is conceptualized as a major contributor to a green infrastructure system within urban contexts. The research focus is on availability of land area and its contribution to food production through exploring the food market within specific locations.
Resilience: Climate Change Adaptation Climate Change adaptation for Resilience: Planning procedures through addressing uncertainty in planning and decision making through indicators of vulnerability and adaptive capacity.
Modalities of urban infrastructure adaptation: How can infrastructure, hard and soft, be re‐conceptualized and retrofitted to cope with stresses of a changing climate, with specific focus on arid and semi‐arid regional contexts.
Cultural Landscapes: Design and Integration of Archaeological Heritage Sites as open space: In addition to their historic value, archaeological sites typical have the potential to provide additional benefits: recreational, ecological and economic. The research addresses modes of design that emerge from the history of the site to develop contemporary narratives that re‐conceptualize the site and integrate it into its present physical, social, and cultural context.
Pedagogy of Design Thinking and Teaching Exploratory approaches: This is a recent interest in development that emerges from my teaching design across different levels of design literacy. Challenges today require educators to develop alternative and approaches to design due to the complex issues facing societies. While this work is exploratory, the aim is to address collaborations beyond the field, alternative methods of approaching design instruction, questioning mentorship and incorporating technology and social media into the creative process. Assessment of Design Studio Teaching: The design is the primary context where design teaching occurs. It is based on the iterative process of design thinking which usually results in varying qualities of student work. Assessment is often subjective due to instructor bias, vagueness of objectives, mixing between teaching as a method and creativity as a product. Work in this area focuses on developing modes of assessment that address the primary aspects of design studio teaching: The person, the process of work and the final outcome, the project or product.

International and local Teaching Collaborations
Fall2014 Interdisciplinary Teaching: One of the aims of the workshop that was conducted in the Swiss Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2014, was to bring together landscape architects and architects (students and instructors) to address a specific problem. The workshop was for one week and addressed urban sprawl on the adjacent slopes to Greater Beirut. The process was very exploratory where daily morning meetings between instructors and students were carried to inform daily work. Daily objectives we preset but the actual activities were open ended. A daily diary to record the process was recorded with specific attention to modes of integration and differing ways of thinking.
Spr2014 Simultaneous Overseas teaching: Exploratory collaboration between AUB/LDEM (Yaser abunnasr) and UMASS Amherst/LARP (Dr. Jack Ahern). The situation: two classes, two universities, 9,000 km apart, face to face via internet. The concept is to have full visual and audio with live seminar discussions and teaching. Being explored during Spring 2014.
2013 Academic and Private Sector, A Farmers' Market Design: A collaboration between the Environment and Sustainable Development Unit at FAFS (ESDU), Department of Landscape Design and Ecosystem Management (AUB) and private real estate developer (Corporate Social responsibility Office, Majid Al‐Futteim Holdings) to design a farmers market within the Waterfront City Project. The design studio was conducted as a student competition and led by Yaser Abunnasr.
