October 2014 - February 2015 Visiting scholar at MIT, Engineering Systems Division and researcher at Division of Clinical Informatics of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center of the Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. The work developed is in the scope of data base modeling for systems redesign to improve survival of patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU). The tasks involved are: feature selection, modeling using intelligent techniques, and interpretation and evaluation. The specific clinical problems in the ICU addressed were: mortality risk prediction for septic patients, and prediction of the risk of readmission to the ICU. In addition, work was also developed in the scope of evaluation of the effectiveness of off-label drug use in cancer patients, specifically in the analysis of the use of metformin in cancer patients and its association with survival from the cancer. November 2013 – November 2014 Invited Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, Portugal. April 2010 – present Researcher with a post-doctoral grant supported by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), ( SFRH/BPD/65215/2009). The work developed is in the scope of data base modeling for systems redesign to improve survival of patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU). The tasks involved are: data acquisition and preprocessing, feature selection, modeling using intelligent techniques, and interpretation and evaluation. The specific clinical problems in the ICU addressed are: mortality risk prediction for septic patients, prediction of the need of vasopressors administration also for septic patients, prediction of the risk of readmission to the ICU, and the prediction of the necessity of performing laboratory tests. February 2010 – March 2010 Junior Researcher with a grant supported by the Project PTDC/SEN-ENR/100063/2008 ID2Care, financed by FCT, Portugal. She developed classification models for the prediction of patients’ outcomes under critical conditions. More specifically, patients with sepsis were addressed and using feature selection methods, it was possible to identify some important features related to their condition. September 2009 - November 2009 Invited teacher at Erasmus University of Rotterdam, Erasmus School of Economics, Econometric Institute, Netherlands. Master course taught: Computational Intelligence. This course is part of the Master program in Economics and Informatics specialisation in Computational Economics, giving an in-depth introduction to the computational approaches for intelligent systems design. 5. Knowledge Transfer

5.1. Consultancy projects

2012 – 2013 Project with SONAE, comércio e serviços: The work in collaboration with the

company Sonae, comércio e serviços, focused on two different problems:

– Modeling of sales forecasting in retail using soft computing techniques: this work

addresses the problem of sales forecasting in retail. The problem was approached using soft

computing techniques for three different forecasting periods: stationary, stationary with

disturbances and non-stationary. Feature extraction was one of the key factors for this work

as some of the features have a strong effect on sales and had to be extracted/designed for the

problem.

– Modeling an alarm system for retail supply chains: this work is an approach to the

monitoring and alarm steps of a supply chain event management system based on discrete

event simulation modeling applied to a retail supply chain.

5.2. Technological development projects with industry

Fileira das Tecnologias de Produção, objecto da candidatura ao Concurso nº 36/SI/2009, no âmbito

do Sistema de Incentivos à Investigação e Desenvolvimento Tecnológico. In this project the

19

researcher main role is the coordination of the task that aims the development of generic

components for automated simulation models.

2012 – 2014 Project: ToolingEDGE – Produção Sustentável de Elevado Desempenho (Projecto

n.13856—Aviso 36/ SI/ 2009 – Projectos Mobilizadores—ToolingEDGE). In this project a retail steel
