CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

GYNAECOLOGYI have a broad training in gynaecology. I recently reduced my clinical commitmentsto allow more tme for research and currently do 1.5 contnence clinics, 2 operatngsessions and one video urodynamics programmed actvites each week. In additon Ido 2 community clinics, a specialist joint care of the elderly clinic and OASIS clinic permonth. In 2006 I developed a programme of community gynaecology clinics; thereare currently 3 of these. I run the subspecialty training programme inUrogynaecology. My Bronze CEA was renewed in 2015.

UROGYNAECOLOGY I gained experience of Urogynaecology prior to being appointed as research fellowand subsequently as a year 4/5 SpR at Kings College Hospital. My training includedundertaking a dedicated period of training equivalent to subspecialty training (priorto recogniton of this post for subspecialty training).

I was employed in July 2000 as the lead clinician for Urogynaecology andsubsequently director of Pelvic foor medicine at BWH a positon I relinquished thisafer 16 years. The service is responsible for the south of Birmingham with anexpanding referral service with facilites to investgate and treat patents at a tertarylevel. Since January 2007 I have worked exclusively in gynaecology andpredominantly Urogynaecology.

In 2003 I was accredited as a subspecialty trainer in Urogynaecology and thisprogramme has run contnuously since 2004.


TEACHING AND EDUCATION EXPERIENCE I have always had an interest in training and regularly taught at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

UndergraduateI was a clinical tutor at Birmingham University for 8 years frstly with Dr Una Martn and subsequently with Jane Sayers. In additon I acted as a Mentor to frst year students in the interim year and have been a clinical mentor since. I have had 3 of students awarded honours in MB BS exams (2 in London 1 in

Birmingham)

Postgraduate RCOG Director of meetngs 2017-2019 RCOG/BSUG Urodynamics course director 2004-10. Tier 3 RCOG recognised trainer & currently developing ter 4 MD examiner in UK for Liverpool, Manchester, Leicester and London Universites

I have also examined a PhD for Southampton and London Universites PhD examiner for Allborg University Denmark and University of Oslo, Norway.

Subspecialist Trainees5. Fiona Bach 2016-current. Fiona is working on value based healthcare andoutcome measures of Urogynaecology.

4. Supryia Bulchandari 2012-15. Supryia developed an interest in OASI and has spent tme learning to perform endoanal ultrasound. She is a consultant in Coventry.

3. Claire Burton 2009-2012. Claire developed the specialist Care of the Elderly clinic. Claire is a consultant Urogynaecologist in Portsmouth.

2. Swat Jha. Oct 2007- Oct 2008. Swat started Subspecialty training in Shefeld& transferred to Birmingham afer one year of a 3 year programme. She was appointed as a consultant in Shefeld.

1. Pallavi Lathe Oct 2005-07. Pallavi developed expertse in evidence based medicine & systematc reviews. She is a consultant at Birmingham Women’s Hospital.


Research interests I established my major research interest on the changes in the female pelvis due tochildbirth. This project culminated in the award of my doctorate in Medicine in 2003.My second area of interest is the psychological impact of incontnence. Both thesethemes have run through my tme in Urogynaecology.I have contnued to be research actve and published more than 160 peer reviewed papers and published abstracts. I have writen invited artcles & book chapters in over 6 publicatons and also edited and writen 3 books.

2. PrevProl study. A large multcentre Study looking at the role of physiotherapy intreatng pelvic organ prolapse.

1. Prolong study. This is a large prospectve cohort study following up over 12,000women who gave birth around 1995. This study is coordinated by the Universityof Aberdeen


Advisory BoardsI have sat on the natonal/European advisory boards for several Pharmaceutcalcompanies discussing the roles of the following drugs:-Trospium chloride,Duloxatne, Detrusitol and Solifenacin, fesoterodine, mirabegron, Onabutulinumtoxin A and Uromune.

I have done consultancy work for Allergan, Apophogepha, Astellas, Astra Zenica,Boston Scientfc, Contura, Eli Lilly, Galen, Gynecare, Madaus, Nicox, Pfzer,Pharmacia, Syner Med and UCB Pharma.

ManagementI was Clinical Director of Gynaecology and theatres 2010-14. During this tme I was responsible for a £14 million service. I oversaw the development of an extended recovery unit for Gynaecology, expansion of EPAU & Urgent care as well as the development of a terminaton service. My external roles include adviser to NICE, working with the DoH on MSC reform and complex commissioning in Gynaecology. I worked for NHS England chairing the recurrent incontnence & prolapse CRG E10 subgroup and represented them on the NHS England working party on vaginal meshes. I led UKCS as secretary treasurer for 7 years and am the current BSUG treasurer. I have a wealth of experience in consultancy with the Pharma and device manufacturing industries.

increasing request for me to provide expert opinions. I have acted as a medical adviser to North Yorkshire Police and the

Worcestershire Coroner’s ofce. I have produced a number of independent reports and atended court as a professional witness. I have also been retained by the legal aid board of Ireland as an expert on a number of cases.

My most recent updates have been on the Specialist Info course in Birmingham September 2015.

I undertake a balance of defence and prosecuton work and have done a lesser number of joint appointments.

Urogynaecology Head of Pelvic foor medicine 2000-16. Set up a tertary referral unit, now assessesover 2000 patents PA. I have a major interest in pelvic foor dysfuncton aferchildbirth & run a joint colorectal clinic. Have expertse in conservatve managementrun the a joint Care of Elderly clinic. Expertse in laparoscopic urogynaecology.

ManagementI was Clinical Director 2010-14. My external roles include adviser to NICE, working with the DoH on MSC reform and complex commissioning in Gynaecology. My work for NHS England included chairing the recurrent incontnence & prolapse E10 subgroup and representng them on the NHS England working party on vaginal meshes. Current RCOG Director of meetngs Previous positons include treasurer of BSUG, member of the IUGA scientfc commitee.

Research & TeachingDespite being on an NHS contract I have maintained an actve research programmefunded through sof monies and several grants totalling over £3.6m. I have publishedover 160 abstracts, peer reviewed papers, review artcles and book chapters. I amactvely involved in undergraduate educaton with University of Birmingham. I havesupervised 9 research fellows, 5 of which has been awarded higher degrees. I haverecently been involved in the restructuring of training in Urogynacology for theRCOG/BSUG and currently in the modernising scientfc careers programme.
