AboutKateSwaffer: Katewas thewinnerof theAustralianFinancialReview100Womenof InfluenceGlobal Leader category for 2018. Shewas also the 2017 SA AustralianOf The Year. She received theUniversityofWollongong’sAlumniSocialImpactAwardforherglobalworkindementiain2016,andwasamongst the Westpac/Financial Review 100 Women of Influence announced for 2016. Amongst anumber of other prestigious awards, she was also the Inaugural winner of the Stirling UniversityInternationalDementiaLeaderin2015,andwinnerasanEmergingLeaderinDisAbilityAwarenessintheNational Australian DisAbility Awards in 2015. She was also invited to give the AAG Sir KeithWilsonOrationinJune2017.Kate is the Chair, CEO and co-founder of the Dementia Alliance International, a global advocacy andsupport group for people livingwith dementia. She is the only Australian to be a fullmember of theWorldDementiaCouncil,andisaboardmemberofAlzheimer’sDiseaseInternational.KateisacurrentPhDstudent,anHonoraryAssociateFellowwiththeFacultyofScience,MedicineandHealth,UniversityofWollongong,aFellowoftheRSA,andanInternationalFellowatCanterburyChristChurchUniversity.ShecompletedaMastersofScience inDementiaCarewithaDistinction in2014.She isalsoa retiredchef having run her own hospitality businesses for ten years, and before that worked as nurse indementiaandagedcareandthenoperatingtheatres.Notably,inherhumanrightswork,sheisthefirstpersonlivingwithadiagnosisofdementiatogivenainvitedkeynotepresentationattheWorldHealthOrganisation(WHO)attheFirstMinisterialConferenceonDementiainMarch2015,whereshedemandedhumanrights,accesstotheConventionontheRightsofPersonswithDisabilities(CRPD)forallpeoplewithdementia,andabalanceinresearchbetweencareandcureontheglobalstage.ThesedemandswereincludedintheWHOFinalCallToAction,andhumanrightswere included in theGlobalActionPlan forDementiaadoptedat theWorldHealthAssembly inMay2017.Kateisaninfluentialhumanitarianandactivistforhumanrightsforagedanddementiacare.Shehasalwaysstoodupforsocialjusticeasanadvocateorinvolunteeringroles,andstillvolunteersforthehomelessinSouthAustralia,andtheBereavedThroughSuicideSupportGroup(SA)Incorporated.She is also awidelypublishedacademic, author andpoet.Her firstbookondementia,WhatTheHellHappened to My Brain?: Living Beyond Dementia, and her second dementia book Diagnosed withAlzheimer’soranotherdementia,co-authoredwithAssociateProfessorLee-FayLowwerebothreleasedin 2016, the latter currently being updated for an international audience. Her first two volumes ofpoetrywerepublished in2012and2016, andher third volume is currently inpress. She continues towriteandpublishacademicarticles,booksandbookchaptersregularly.Katehasbeen instrumental inbringinghuman rights to the fore indementiaandagedcare, includingrecognition in practice for dementia being recognised as a disability through published articles andbooks,presentationsandglobalcampaigning.Since2010,KatehasbeenactivelyworkingwithamajorfocusonhumanrightsandaccesstotheCRPDforpeoplewithdementia,andhasgivenmorethan800invitedkeynotepresentationsonanumberoftopics,notonlyinthefieldofdementiaandhumanrights,but on disAbility, discrimination, stigma, the lived experience of dementia, dementia-enabling designprinciples, language, Inclusive Communities, Prescribed Disengagement®,Models of care, InformationTechnology,AdvocacyandActivism,dementiapolicy(local,nationalandglobal)andlossandgrief.Therehasbeenadistincttransformationinherworkfromadvocacytoactivism,inAustraliaandontheglobalstage for all peoplewith disAbilities, and specifically disAbilities caused by a diagnosis of a dementia.KatealsoactivelysupportstheDignityPartyinSouthAustralia,heronlypoliticalaffiliation.

NotablyKatehasbeentheleadingadvocatedemandinghumanrightsanddisabilityrightsforpeoplewithdementia,andledthisactivismandmovementbypeoplewithdementiaasthefirstpersonwithdementiatobeaninvitedkeynotespeakerattheWorldHealthOrganisationinMarch2015attheFirstMinisterialConferenceonDementia.Thatyear,shewasoneoftwowinnersoftheNationalDisabilityAwardsin2015,asanEmergingLeadersinDisabilityAwareness.TheGlobalRehabilitationAlliance:DuetoKate’sadvocacyandwork,DementiaAllianceInternationalisoneofthefoundingmembersofanewglobalAssociation,theGlobalRehabilitationAlliance,whoheldtheirfoundingmeetingduringtheWorldhealthAssemblyinMay2018,asoneof14foundingorganisationmembers.Thisissignificant,asitwillhelpensurerehabilitationeventuallybecomespartofthesuiteofservicesandsupportallpeoplewithdementiaareprovidedwithandwhomarecurrentlydenied.WorldDementiaCouncil:TheWorldDementiaCouncil(WDC)isaninternationalcharity.Itconsistsof24seniorexpertsandleadersdrawnfromresearch,academia,industryandNGOsinbothhighincomeandlowandmiddle-incomecountriesandincludestwoleaderswithapersonaldementiadiagnosis.WDCstimulatesinnovationandidentifiesandpursuespriorityopportunitiesforglobalcollaborationagainstdementia.AllofWDC’smeetingsareattendedbyanumberofitsassociatemembers,includingfromnationalgovernments,theWHOandOECD.KateSwafferistheonlyAustraliantobeafullmember,andadvocatedformanymonthstoensurepeoplewithdementiawereincludedasmembers,throughherroleasChairofDementiaAllianceInternational.Therearetwomemberslivingwithdementia,andKateisalsoamemberoftwooftheGlobalTeams,oneonCare,theotheronRiskReduction.ICHOMStandardSetforDementia:TheInternationalConsortiumonHealthOutcomeMeasures(ICHOM)approachisbuiltonasolidframeworkdevelopedatHarvardBusinessSchoolbyProfessorsMichaelE.PorterandElizabethO.Teisberg.In2006,PorterandTeisbergwrotethewell-knownbook,RedefiningHealthCare,whichoutlinestheargumentforusinghealthoutcomesdatatoredefinethenatureofcompetitioninhealthcare.TheICHOMStandardSetforDementiaistheresultofhardworkbyagroupofleadingphysicians,measurementexpertsandpatients.Asafullmemberofthisteam,Kateprovidedbothintellectualadvice,andperspectivesfromtheexperienceoflivingwithdementiaandcaringforthreepeoplewithdementia,aswellasherbackgroundinnursing.ItwastherecommendationoftheoutcomesthatmattermosttopersonswithDementiathatinfluencedthissetofstandards.
