Research Interests: Comparitive cell biology and pathology of Microsporidia, phylum Protista, obligate
intracellular parasites, infecting invertebrate and vertebrate animals and man.
As a comparative pathobiologist, I have studied these organisms in various host groups
including insects, molluscs, trematodes, fish, mammals, and man. Research includes
parasite identification, developmental biology, ultrastructure, pathology, and host-parasite
interface/interaction. For the past 20 years my research interests have included the
discovery, identification, description, developmental and cell biology of human-infecting
Microsporidia.
Awards and Honors:
Acknowledged by the editor–in-chief of The Journal of Eukaryoic Microbiology (the
Journal of the International Society of Protistologists) as its most cited author for the 10
year period 1990-2000 (see editorial in J Euk. Microbiol. 2001. 48(1)1-2).
Additionally, Cali, Orenstein, and Kottler, 1993 was the most highly cited paper in that
period and Cali & Owen 1990 was the second most cited paper.
