While working in the industry I was involved in establishing research groups and research facilities. This included planning and defining a research strategy, hiring of personnel and purchase of equipment, mainly computers and software. In addition to being active in research, I was participating in marketing, planning and follow-up of seismic data acquisition and processing.

During my career I have been teaching at different levels, mostly at the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH), on topics like systems theory, signal processing, statistics and seismic methods. From 1979 to 1988 I was adjunct associate professor and adjunct professor in Petroleum Geophysics at NTH, and since 1989 I have been professor of Applied Geophysics at NTH, now the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU. I have been engaged in reorganizing the courses in seismic wave propagation, geophysical signal analysis, seismic data acquisition and processing, and reservoir seismics. I have advised or co-advised 17 Ph.D.’s including one at the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBa), Brazil and one at Colorado School of Mines. Presently I am advising 6 Ph.D. students. In the academic year 1991-1992 I was invited by the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico, Brazil and Petrobras to be visiting professor of Geophysics in the Programa de Pesquisa e Pósgraduacão em Geofísica at UFBa, Brazil. In addition to teaching courses in solid earth geophysics, seismic exploration and signal prosessing, I was supervising 6 M.Sc. and one Ph.D. student. During my sabbatical year in 1994-95 I was visiting professor at UFBa, Brazil, University of Karlsruhe, Germany, Politecnico di Milano, Italy and the State University of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. I was a visiting scholar at the Center for Wave Phenomena at Colorado School of Mines in 2001-2002. I am an active member of several professional societies where I have served on committees and been involved in organizing conferences and workshops. I was the editor of Geophysical Prospecting from 1986 to 1989 and assistant editor of Geophysics from 1995 to 1999. My biography is included in several biographical reference books including Marquis Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering. I was awarded the first Norwegian Geophysical Prize in 1985, the EAGE Conrad Schlumberger Award in 1993 and the Statoil Research Prize in 2003. Since September 2006 I am Statoil Research Professor at NTNU coordinating research with M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. Most of my research is done in cooperation with Ph.D. students and support from the Norwegian Research Council and the petroleum industry, including Hydro, Statoil, BP, Total and EMGS. Present cooperation include professor Milton J. Porsani at Universidade Federal da Bahia, Salvador, Brazil on multi-channel deconvolution; professor Martin Tygel, Universidade Estatual da Campinas, Campinas, Brazil on traveltime approximations and migration; professor Yury Tyapkin, Ukrainian State Geological Prospecting Institute, Kiev, Ukraina on noise suppression; and professor Marteen V. de Hoop, Pardue University, Illinois, USA on tomography and inverse scattering problems. Local cooperation include professor Lasse Amundsen, Statoil on inverse problems, dr. Børge Arntsen on migration and dr. Alexey Stovas on seismic time processing. In 1994 I worked on a project on seismic traveltime inversion for the AGIP Research Centre in Milan, and in 1993-96 I was involved with the German-Norwegian Geoscientific Cooperation in cooperation with the University of Karlsruhe. From 1996 to 2001 I was working on projects for the Norsk Hydro Research Centre in cooperation with dr. Jose Carcione at OGS, Trieste and dr. Alexey Stovas at IPT. Other cooperation includes studies of mixed-phase deconvolution and multi-channel predictive deconvolution (professor Milton Porsani, UFBa, Salvador) and seismic diffraction modeling in anisotropic media (professor Martin Tygel, Unicamp,

Campinas). Since 1997 I have been working with professor Maarten V. de Hoop at Colorado School of Mines on seismic velocity analysis and angle migration using the inverse generalized Radon transform.
