Disseminating advancements, scientific discoveries, and

innovative medical technologies to the medical community

and into clinical practice

Alan Villavicencio, MD

Dr. Villavicencio is the Founder and

Chairman of the Board for the Justin Parker

Neurological Institute. Dr. Villavicencio

graduated from Harvard Medical School

and completed a neurosurgical residency

at Duke University and specialty orthopedic

spine surgery fellowship at Cedars-Sinai

Medical Center. He is one of only a handful

of surgeons in the country with dual

neurosurgery and orthopedic spine training.

The 14th Annual Symposium, Current Techniques in the Treatment of Cranial

and Spinal Disorders, is facilitated by Boulder Neurosurgical & Spine Associates

(BNA) and Justin Parker Neurological Institute (JPNI). The symposium is a

one-day extensive seminar that brings together a diverse panel of experts to

discuss the latest advancements and treatment considerations in cranial,

neurosurgical and orthopedic spine technology. Presenters will discuss advances

in deep brain stimulation technology, surgical and radiosurgical options for

vestibular schwannoma, preoperative opioid use as a predictor of outcomes

in spine surgery patients, the safety and efficacy of GM-CSF/Leukine for

Alzheimer’s disease, and the argument for fusion versus total disc replacement.

JPNI is a fully accredited 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose principle

purpose is to conduct clinical research and improve clinical outcomes. The

mission of JPNI is to advance scientific discoveries and innovative medical

technologies into clinical practice by conducting clinical trials to implement

best practices and disseminate to the medical community. JPNI also provides

fellowship and internship opportunities to neurosurgical and orthopedic spine

surgeons and students pursuing careers in medicine.

Jared Knopman, MD is a board-certified neurosurgeon and interventional neuroradiologist who received his medical degree from Mount

Sinai School of Medicine, where he was

elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical

Honor Society. Dr. Knopman did his surgical

internship and neurosurgical residency,

also serving as chief resident, at New

York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell

Medical College and Memorial Sloan-

Kettering Cancer Hospital. He completed

a specialized fellowship in endovascular

neurosurgery/interventional neuroradiology

at Weill Cornell Medical College.

Dr. Knopman has been named to the

SuperDoctors Rising Stars list, a distinction

afforded to the top 2.5 percent of physicians

in his field. In 2016, the American Heart

Association’s Young Professionals of NYC

presented Dr. Knopman with its Young

Heart Award, honoring him for his work

as an advocate for heart health and for his

pioneering work in new approaches to

treating stroke.

Dr. Knopman has extensive research

experience in minimally invasive neuro-

surgery and has published articles and

book chapters about the treatment of

degenerative spinal disease, brain tumors,

and aneurysms utilizing the most innova-

tive, and least invasive approaches. He

was one of the original authors of a novel

trial of super-selective treatment of

malignant brain tumors using targeted

chemotherapy, as featured in The New

York Times, and he has subsequently

expanded this technique to children.

Dr. Knopman was awarded the prestigious

CNS/Micrus Endovascular Neurosurgery

grant as well as the Leonard and Fleur

Harlan Clinical Scholarship for his

research in vascular disease. Currently,

Dr. Knopman is the Principal Investigator

for a NIH-funded study at Weill Cornell

Medical College for utilizing topical

antibiotics to lower the risk of infection

after brain surgery.

Course DescriptionThis live educational activity will review updates on the latest advances in the treatment of cranial and spinal neurosurgical and orthopedic issues. Each session provides an intensive and practical review from a panel of experts, with emphasis on evidence-based approaches in the fields of neurosurgery and orthopedic spine treatments.

Audience Response SystemTo promote the educational and interactive environment of our symposium, we will be using an audience response system (ARS) during each of the presentations. Each speaker will present multiple-choice questions for the audience to respond followed by real-time polling. The ARS system allows for further discussion of the topics and encourages a stronger interaction between the speakers and attendees.

Learning ObjectivesUpon completion of this live activity, participants should be able to:

1. Discuss evidence-based clinical data in the management of spinal and cranial disorders.

2. Discuss the pros and cons of diverse neurosurgical techniques by using the latest scientific findings.

3. Recognize the beneficial role of multidisci-plinary care components for the clinical management and treatment of spinal and cranial disorders.

RegistrationThe registration fee for this live event is $90 and includes tuition, continental breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, and beverages, as well as educational materials including presentations and CVs for all speakers. The early registration deadline is Friday, October 6, 2017 at 12 a.m. Registration will increase from $90 to $110 beginning Saturday, October 7, 2017. Dinner and cocktails are an additional $35.
