PM MODI LAUNCHES VAN DHAN SCHEME TO HELP INCREASE TRIBAL INCOME

The Prime Minister of India, NarendraModi launched the Van Dhan Scheme of Ministryof Tribal Affairs and TRIFED, during thecelebrations of Ambedkar Jayanti at Bijapur,Chattisgarh.

The Van Dhan scheme along with others like JanDhan and Gobar-Dhan schemes had the potentialto change the tribal-rural economic system.Under Van Dhan, 10 Self Help Groups of 30 Tribalgatherers would be constituted.

NITI AAYOG ANNOUNCES THE LAUNCH OF ATAL NEW INDIA CHALLENGES

The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) of the NITI Aayogtoday announced to launch the Atal New IndiaChallenges, which came into being following PrimeMinisters clarion call to bring innovations andtechnologies relevant to the people.

Applicants showing capability, intent, and potential toproductize technologies will be awarded grants upto Rs. One crore.

This grant support will be supplemented by mentoring,handholding, incubating and other support as neededat various stages of commercialisation. whilegenerating wider deployment.

The Union Home Minister stated that the ZonalCouncils were established under the StatesReorganisation Act, 1956 with the objective todevelop the habit of cooperative working amongthe States and between the Centre and theStates.

The Zonal Councils are mandated to discuss andmake recommendations on any matter ofcommon interest in the field of economic andsocial planning.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today hailed the centuriesold ties between India and China during a delegation-leveltalks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Wuhan. PMModi told Chinese President that the two countries have abig opportunity to work together for the benefit of theirpeople and the world.

Earlier, the two leaders exchanged views on solidifying theIndia-China relationship at a one to one meeting as theybegan a two-day informal summit in Wuhan. TRUMP ADMINISTRATION TERMINATES TEMPORARY PROTECTION STATUS FOR NEPALESE PEOPLE

The Trump administration announced on April27,2018 that it would be terminating thetemporary protection status (TPS) that wasearlier granted to the Nepalese people.

The decision is expected to affect over 8,950people, 85 percent of whom live in New York.

All of these people from Nepal would either haveto go back to Nepal or face deportation.

However, to allow for an orderly transition,Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen MNielsen has determined to delay the terminationfor 12 months.

The designation will now terminate on June 24,2019. The TPS is a designation afforded tonationals of countries experiencing humanitariancrisis such as violent conflict, environmentaldisasters, earthquake or epidemics that wouldprevent nationals from returning safely.

MYANMAR TO INTRODUCE NEW COINS

The Central Bank of Myanmar announced on April 27,2018 will introduce quarter tical gold coins with newdesign to meet high demand.

The portrait of late national hero and Father of theNation of modern-day Myanmar General Aung San isengraved on the new coin. He was the father ofMyanmars state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.

The Central Bank of Myanmar has been issuing qualitytical, half tical and quarter tical gold coins since 1991with images of a ploughing farmer and an elephanthauling a log being depicted on them.

INDIA AGREES TO SEND BUDDHIST RELICS FOR VESAK IN SRI LANKA

India has agreed for the most revered Buddhist relicsfrom Sarnath to be taken to Sri Lanka for publicexposition on the occasion of Vesak festival. This is thefirst time relics from Sarnath are being brought to SriLanka from India, and special arrangements have beenmade for this purpose.

They will be on public display at Temple Trees inColombo for four days. This is the second time thatIndia has taken initiative to exhibit the sacred relics ofLord Buddha in Sri Lanka. The first time such initiativewas the exhibition of the Kapilavastu Relics in 2012.

Senior lawyer Indu Malhotra was sworn in as thejudge of the Supreme Court in the presenceof Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra. Theappointment was made by the President RamNath Kovind.

Malhotra has now become the first womanlawyer to be directly appointed as a SupremeCourt judge. In 2007, Mrs Malhotra was only thesecond woman to be appointed a senior advocateby the apex court, three decades after Leila Sethfirst made history.

The government will soon acquire the stake ofReserve Bank of India in housing financeregulator National Housing Bank (NHB).

The stake transfer would be cash neutral andthere would be no cash outgo. RBI currentlyholds 100 per cent stake in the NHB.

The Finance Bill 2018 has amended the NationalHousing Bank Act, 1987, for transferring RBIsstake in the NHB to the government.
