job. To what part of the harvest are you being sent? What are you being called to do ?

At that time the Lord appointed seventy-two others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs

to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them,

"The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.

Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way. Into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this household.'

If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.

Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment.

Do not move about from one house to another. Whatever town you enter and they welcome you,

eat what is set before you, cure the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of God is at hand for you."

The parish community came together for

a wonderful party June 23 to show our

appreciation to Fr. Hector and Fr. Jeff.

Thank you to everyone that brought

wonderful food to share. We had plenty

and it was all so good. Thank you to the

people that supplied the horchata, moji-

tos and wine. It was such a hot day and

they were all so refreshing. Thank you

for the special cake that was made for the

two priests that included their pictures.

Thank you for the music.

Thank you to the volunteers that helped

throughout the day and especially with

washing dishes, putting the remaining

food and the tables and chairs away.

Finally, thank you to the Cathedral staff

that helped as well. We are so blessed to

be part of this community.

Tuition Assistance Fund For Parishioners The Cathedral Parish has a fund supported by our pa-rishioners that provides supplemental assistance with tuition for our fami-lies that seek Catholic School education for their children. It especially serves the need to help off-set extra costs to families from outside the school parish if, for example, their own parish does not have a school. Please inquire about this assistance by calling our parish office at 408-283-8100. This is available to parishioners of St. Joseph Cathedral. We welcome your call so that we can answer your ques-tions.

WORD SEARCH CAN YOU FIND THE WORDS BELOW FROM TODAY’S GOSPEL IN THE SQUARE ABOVE? DEMONS DUST HARVEST HEAVEN HOUSEHOLD KINGDOM LABORERS LAMBS LIGHTNING PEACE SANDALS SPIRITS STREETS TOWN WOLVES

Today's Gospel begins immediately after the final verse in last Sunday's Gospel. After strong language about the difficulties of discipleship, Jesus immediately appoints 72 people to go ahead of him to every town and place he plans to visit, proclaim-

ing that the Kingdom of God is at hand. He sends them in pairs. In the Law of Moses two witnesses were need-ed for a testimony to be credible. It was probably also a safer way to travel. Jesus admits it will be difficult, that he is sending them out like lambs among wolves. Yet they are to bring nothing with them, not even a money bag or sandals. They are to greet no one on the way so as not to be dis-tracted from their mission. When they enter a house, their message is simply “peace.” The response they will receive may be positive or negative. Either way, they are to know that the Kingdom of God is at hand. They are not to demand special treatment but eat and drink what-ever is given them. They are to stay in one house and are not to look around for one that provides better ac-commodations. They are to heal the sick as a sign that the Kingdom of God is at hand for them. Like Jesus' miracles, healing is a sign of the coming of the king-dom. If the town will not receive them, they are to shake the dust from their feet and move on. Even in the case of such rejection they should know that the Kingdom of God is at hand. When they return from their journeys, they are rejoicing because their mission has been successful. Demons were under their power because of Jesus' name. Jesus may have sent them out as lambs among wolves, but at the conclusion of this passage he assures them that they have been given power over the enemy and nothing will harm them, not even serpents and scorpions.

S aint of the Week Blessed Emmanuel Ruiz 1804-1860 Not much is known of the early life of Emmanuel

Ruiz, but details of his heroic death in defense of the faith have come down to us. Born of humble parents in Santander, Spain, he became a Franciscan priest and served as a missionary in Damas-cus. This was at a time when anti-Christian riots shook Syria and thou-sands lost their lives in just a short time. Among these were Emmanuel, superior of the Franciscan convent, seven other friars, and three laymen. When a men-acing crowd came looking for the men, they refused to renounce their faith and become Muslims. The men were sub-jected to horrible tortures before their martyrdom. Emmanuel, his brother Franciscans and the three Maronite laymen were beatified in 1926 by Pope Pius XI..

FROM BISHOP OSCAR CANTÚ While the Diocese of San Jose will always continue to uphold the highest standards of safety and protection for our chil-dren, Senate Bill 360 is a clear affront against the Sacra-ment of Reconciliation and the Seal of Confession. (See below) Option 1 (name) "My name is _______ from zip code (#####) and I urge Assembly Member _______ to vote NO on SB 360 be-cause it is an assault against the freedom of religion."
