The National Peoples Congress (NPC) and localpeoples congresses are established throughdemocratic elections, responsible to and
supervised by the people. The NPC is composed of deputies elected from
the provinces, autonomous regions andmunicipalities directly under the Central
Government and deputies elected by the armedforces.
The NPC is elected for a term of five years.

Environment
China has a variety of forest types. Bamboo is a very fast growingplant.
An interesting tree found in China is the ginkgo or maidenhair treewhich is used in Chinese medicine. It is one of the world's earliestsurviving plant species and first grew 160 million years ago.
Wildlife - Tigers, Snow Leopards, Monkeys, Yaks and Giant Pandas. Birdlife includes peacocks, parrots, cranes and storks
China's natural environment has been adversely affected by humanintervention in a number of ways. Deforestation has gone on formany years.
In 1978 steps were taken to protect the environment. There is nowa programme of tree planting and a national conservationorganization looks at the consequences for the environment ofusing pesticides and chemicals.

The criminal law amendments abolished thecrime of "counter-revolutionary, while criminalprocedures reforms encouraged establishment of
a more transparent, adversarial trial process. The PRC Constitution and laws provide for
fundamental human rights.
