CULTURE CULTURE IN HALTON HILLS The Halton Hills Library & Cultural Centre Located at 9 Church Street in Downtown Georgetown, this facility brings together many services and amenities under one roof. In addition to typical lending options for books, music and movies, the Halton Hills Public Library offers a wide range of community programs and services for preschool children through to older adults. The John Elliott Theatre is a 260-seat performing arts theatre, hosting TIFF films, musicals, concerts and local theatre groups. The Helson Art Gallery, located in a historic church, features rotating exhibitions of local art, private collections and traveling exhibitions. Visitors also enjoy artwork in the Sisnett Lobby and common areas. The Helson Collection At the heart of Frederick A. Helson’s outstanding gift of art to the Town of Halton Hills is the story of how Canada’s artistic identity was forged during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As revealed through paintings by members of the Group of Seven, their predecessors and contemporaries, the Helson Collection also allows us to trace the evolution of the various organizations which supported artists during this critical time period. Additionally, an important group of European paintings afford valuable insights into artistic trends which paralleled those in Canada. Cultural Services The Town of Halton Hills is pleased to announce that culture has a new home in the Economic Development, Innovation and Culture Department. Cultural Services is guided by the following Vision and Mission: Vision Statement: To foster the development and celebration of Halton Hills’ unique character, diversity, civic identity, rural lifestyle, natural and cultural heritage and to do so in a way that has the greatest positive impact on the quality of life in Halton Hills. Mission Statement: To implement the Cultural Master Plan by working collaboratively with a wide variety of internal and external partners to coordinate the delivery of cultural services, build strong cultural institutions, complete communities, support economic development and grow the Town’s creative capital. EON VIEW at the Helson Gallery

December 11 – February 23, 2020Colour takes center stage in this exhibition of painting and photography featuring local artists, local collections and works from the Town of Halton Hills Collection.

CHROMA

This fall, visit the Helson Gallery for a unique opportunity to view and create art at Halton Hills’ premiere public art gallery. Students will tour an exhibition by the Southern Ontario Visual Artists featuring a variety of styles and media then create their own take-home work of art inspired by the show. Programs are offered Mondays and Tuesdays: October 21–December 8; $4 per student

Art Fundamentals: Grades 1–3: The focus is on learning with fun art activities in the welcoming setting of the Helson Gallery. Students will develop their vocabulary for discussing and creating works of art.

Expressions: Understanding and Analyzing Art, Grades 4–8Delve deeper into the elements and principles of art and the critical analysis process. Students will have the opportunity to express informed opinions about original works of art plus get creative in our studio space. Coming in Spring 2020: First Visit for KindergartenIntroduce your students to the magic of colour at the Helson Gallery with storytelling, games, music and hands-on art projects. Programs are approximately 90 minutes in length and accommodate up to 60 students. Available Mondays and Tuesdays from March – June 2020; $5 per student. Book early to avoid disappointment!

From exhibition talks to professional development workshops for artists and special events, the Helson Gallery offers a variety of fun, educational opportunities. We also take our show on the road with outreach presentations to local service clubs and other organizations. Learn about the culturally significant Helson Collection and Canada’s premier painters, the Group of Seven. A speaker will visit your group and provide a 45 minute talk on these local art treasures along with highlights of the many new gifts of art made to the Town of Halton Hills. Special in-gallery presentations about the Helson Collection are also available.
