A Spring Day in Europe Project

We are in Austria!

Austria (in German, Österreich), is a republic in central Europe.Once the centre of power for the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria is now a smaller country with grand traditions and landscapes. Austria is about580 km long and has an area of 83,859 square km. Vienna is the country's capital and largest city.

The Austrian flag

A legend says that the red and white of the Austrian flag represent Duke Leopold V‘s blood-stained tail coat after a battle

Austria: land of mountains …

This is a picture of a lake in the alps, the Gosau lake. The mountain in the center in the back is the famous Dachstein mountain.

Austria has four great seasons!

Christmas in Austria

On the 5th of December, Krampus, a devil-like fellow, comes and takes away any bad children

On the 6th of December, Nikolo comes with sweets and small presents for children.

Traditionally, Christmas trees are decorated on Christmas eve

Easter in Austria

Coloured eggs and pussy willows are popular decorations

Children hunt for eggs outdoors

Processions are held on Palm Sunday

Sometimes Easter bonfires are made

A recipe...Wiener Schnitzel!

Recipe for four people:

four escalopes of veal of 120 grams each breading: flour, 2 eggs, breadcrumbs, salt oil or lard for frying

Pound the meat thin and cut the fringes carefully. Salt the meat lightly. For the breading: Prepare three plates: Put flour on one, breadcrumbs on a second and two eggs that have

been whisked. Cover the meat first in the flour, then in the egg and finally in the breadcrumbs.

Heat the fat in the saucepan. Put the breaded cutlets in the saucepan and fry both sides. There should be enough fat in the saucepan so that the schnitzel float in the saucepan and do`not touch the bottom.

Guten Appetit!

For the traditional Wiener Schnitzel, the Viennese normally use veal and lard to fry the meat. You can also use pork, chicken or turkey and oil for frying. It will taste just as delicious either way!

Our National Hymn

Land der Berge, Land am Strome, Land der Äcker, Land der Dome, Land der Hämmer zukunftsreich! Heimat bist du großer Söhne, Volk begnadet für das Schöne, Vielgerühmtes Österreich, Vielgerühmtes Österreich!

We like the ‘Land of Mountains, Land of Streams’ beginning!

Land of mountains, land of stremaLand of fields, land of cathedrals…Land of the hammers of the future! (etc.)
