12/19/2015-3/13/2016 ■2F Corridor of Gallery 104Yiwarra Kuju: The Canning Stock RouteThe Indigenous people of Australia’s Western Desert have lived in their homelands for thousands of years. In 1906, Australian Alfred Canning was officially appointed to survey and develop the famous Canning Stock Route in the area. The route stretched for some 1,850 kilometers and approximately 54 wells were built along its length, making it Australia’s longest historic stock route and also the site where Indigenous and non-Indigenous histories intersect. This exhibition presents digital prints of 11 works selected from the 2010 National Museum of Australia exhibition of the same name. Based on the perspectives of Indigenous artists, the exhibition tells a story of contact with kartiya (white people), of conflict and survival, and of exodus and return. In addition, it is a story of family, culture, and country.◎ Helicopter Tjungurrayi, Warlayirti Artists ; Waruwiya (detail); Acrylic on linen ; 94×64.5 cm ; 2007; National Museum of Australia

Combining shapes such as spheres and cones, the cleverness, liveliness and sleekness of a monkey was vividly presented in a nifty model. Meanwhile, seeded teachers in Kaohsiung were encouraged to lead local culture-themed children painting programs that allow students to learn about and identify themselves with local nature, history, and culture. This exhibit includes over a thousand color painted little monkeys created by local children, demonstrating the rich and diverse creative artistic energy within the schools of Kaohsiung.◎ Colorful works by children

Ark of Tomorrow: 2015 Kaohsiung International Container Arts Festival facilitates a discussion on living and the environment, inviting architects to design a container-turned ark that carries introspection and hope. Such containers focus on the future of human existence, humans’ home planet of Earth, how humans adapt to extreme environments, and where humans find their shelter after such traumatic experiences. 12/5/2015-2/14/2016 ■KMFA Gallery B01Gallery for Citizens: The Sound of Mountain— Message from the Soul: Solo Exhibition of Yeh, Tung-Jinn Yeh, Tung-Jinn is a man with the scientific mind of a math teacher and the perceptive heart of an artist. He is well-versed in both math problems and paintings. Math and painting are two completely different subjects, with the former needing logical reasoning and the latter requiring sentimental appreciation. However, for Yeh, they are the same, for they both involve creating something with the mind and soul. Born in 1946 in Cijin, Kaohsiung, Yeh graduated from the Department of Mathematics, National Taiwan Normal University in 1968. He worked as a math teacher for 30 years after graduation. He retired in 1998 and moved to Puli, Nantou to focus on his painting in 2000. Depicting mostly mountains and waters in his paintings, Yeh infuses the media and skills of Western paintings into the system of Oriental paintings. The soft colors and vanishing lines in his works successfully represent the lushness of mountain-based vegetation, the lingering of smoky clouds, the flowing of mountain brooks, and the dynamics of the ever-changing mountain mist and light. In his paintings, mountains are no longer just mountains and waters are no longer just waters. They are what come from his heart; they tell stories of his life.◎ Yeh, Tung-Jinn; The Sound of Mountain-36 ; Oil crayon on paper; 75×55cm, 2002

However, since the early 20th century, the boundaries between different art categories have gradually dissolved with complete liberation in both forms of expression and use of media. Exploring the media and manifestations of contemporary art, this exhibition features time-based media, art installations, and multimedia materials to demonstrate the unlimited creativity and possibilities of contemporary art.◎ Tsai, Hsien-Yiu ; The Circle of Life (I) ; Paper pulp, bark fiber, dried vegetable and fruits ; 120×90 cm; 1993

12/5/2015-3/6/2016 ■KMFA Galleries 101-103Everyday LifeWhat is everyday life? It is our recurring actions, repeated journeys, and space in which we have long dwelled. The substance of our daily lives is woven from these marks and manifestations of everyday life, which also comprise the landscape closest to us and the world we encounter in the most direct way. Nevertheless, “ordinariness” is two-sided, contradictory in nature, in which life’s repeated journeys become insipid burdens, long-dwelt-in space becomes prisons, and our recurring actions become suffocating routine affairs. If everyday life is the thing with which we are most familiar with, when everyday life is disturbed by the unfamiliar, what will happen to us? How will our sense of familiarity change? Perhaps we can contemplate ordinary everyday life as a port in a storm; perhaps we will be bewildered by it or feel relaxed because of it, or sometimes feel happy or depressed for it. What is special about our ordinary everyday lives is that there is nothing special about them. A quote from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle captures the true significance of the everyday life: “Life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent.” The unordinary part of everyday life can be found amidst the recurring events of everyday life. This exhibition relies on five whimsical subtopics — “monkeys playing in the human world,” “kaleidoscope of life,” “life is like a play,” “nothing is more important than food,” and “fun is life” — which interprets some non-mundane spectra that artists have refracted from everyday life. ◎ Chang, Chien-Chi; Dinner ; Gelatin silver print; 40.6 x 50.8 cm; 1998; Collection of Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts

12/19/2015-3/27/2016 ■KMFA Galleries 104-105Boundary Narratives— Sakuliu vs. Rahic TalifA boundary is an imaginary space, a space that divides you and me, and a space where different cultures intertwine and interact with one another. Based on the fact that histories of indigenous tribes in Taiwan were orally passed down generation after generation, this dual solo exhibition, Boundary Narratives, displays the works of two indigenous artists, Sakuliu Pavavalung and Rahic Talif, pioneers in combining contemporary artistic creations with heritage of their indigenous cultures. The two artists are invited to write tribal art histories and cultures by providing descriptions and interpretations from their perspectives as artists. Based on their descriptions and interpretations, the art histories and cultures of Taiwan’s indigenous peoples are exhibited.◎ Sakuliu Pavavalung; Lighting a Lantern ; Pencil on paper; 22.5×16 cm; 2003; Collection of Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts

2/27-5/8 ■KMFA Gallery B01Gallery for Citizens: A New Elegant Program— Ink Wash Paintings by Su, Chung-MingAs far as Su, Chung-Ming is concerned, traditional ink wash painting is a classic artistic form that preserves the brushwork techniques and aesthetic thinking of the past and has been refined and passed on from generation to generation. As a result, ink wash painting can be considered a “program” that can facilitate learning. The reason that Su delved so deeply into ink wash painting is to help pass on our heritage of traditional wisdom while developing new expressive modes and aesthetic flavors. This exhibition is the second time that Su’s works have been shown at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts’ Gallery for Citizens. Nearly nine years after his first Gallery for Citizens exhibition, Su has now gotten even better at imbuing his refined and classical landscape compositions with stylistic elements derived from his own ideas and interests. He can thus impart subtle and otherworldly artistic touches to the schema of classic Chinese landscape painting, and thereby provide a blissful Eden to quench the thirsty souls of people living amidst the relentless noise and confusion of modern society.◎ Su, Chung-Ming; Spring Water Flowing through Rocks ; Ink on paper; 80×110 cm; 2013; artist’s personal collection

A History of Environmental Movements in KaohsiungAlthough Kaohsiung rose to prominence as a port transport-oriented city and features heavy industries, environmental movements in the city have never slowed down. Examples of Kaohsiung’s efforts to protect the environment include its Anti-Petrochemical Protests in the 1980s and the Southern Green Revolution in the 1990s. The road to environmental sustainability was and is still an unfinished path with no end in sight. The A History of Environmental Movements in Kaohsiung special exhibition will showcase both previous and current environmental movements in Kaohsiung. This year, the Fifth Naphtha Cracker in Houjing was relocated, and this exhibition displays the efforts and hard work invested by Kaohsiung citizens to protect the environment, how public consensus evolves and influences local regions before being passed down, and Kaohsiung’s future development visions.

10/22/2015-5/29/2016 ■Exhibition Rooms 103 & 104

Riverside Neighbourhoods: Dashu and Linyuan Special ExhibitionDashu is situated upstream of the Gaobing River, while Linyuan is downstream. Both districts in Kaohsiung are beautiful and prosperous because they are by the river. They are situated on prime land, and they have developed and fostered a unique and rich cultural heritage and history, which have attracted many visitors. This exhibition introduces the historical stories of Dashu and Linyuan and welcomes you to take a closer look at Kaohsiung's two riverside districts.

Shadow Puppeteer over Six Decades: Exhibition of the Donation of Longxi Tsai’s Shadow Puppetry RelicsLongxi Tsai (1892-1980) was a native of Mituo District, Kaohsiung. He became a puppeteer at the age of 23 and remained a puppeteer until his passing at the age of 87, making him the oldest puppeteer in Taiwanese shadow puppet history. This exhibition will present more than 100 shadow puppetry relics left by Tsai, showcase the legendary life of the great master, and teach the public about the charm and vitality of Taiwanese shadow puppetry.

Images of Scars - “Witness 228”, a Photo Exhibition on the victims of the 228 Massacre in the Kaohsiung and Pingtung AreasThe 228 Incident created a deep wound, thus was bound to leave a permanent scar. To awaken Taiwan society's humanitarian care, uphold justice for the 228 Incident, continue to pursue democracy in Taiwan and let the public know about the history of the 228 Incident, this tragedy and the scar it has left behind are shown through Pan, Siao-Sia’s photos, Yang, Bi-Chuan Yang's writings and activities. We hope that through the presentation of victims' stories and historical materials, historical truths can be revealed and scars unveiled to let later generations understand this major human rights incident that happened 69 years ago and learn from it.

The British Consulate at Takow

The British Consulate at Takow (BCT) is located at Sizihwan, Gushan District, Kaohsiung. Construction of the BCT was organized by the Bureau of Cultural Affairs (of the Kaohsiung City Government) and completed in November 2013. Together with the Former British Consular Residence (FBCR) on the hill, the Kaohsiung Aquatic Research Station at the foot of the hill (the British Consulate), and the historic trail, the three historic sites make up the only consulate park in Taiwan with fully preserved offices and residence. From the FBCR, scenic views of the seascape of Sizihwan can be clearly observed. With the assistance of various local cultural center project subsidies over the years, the FBCR has been restored and “revitalized,” evolving into one of the most popular monument-based cultural centers in Taiwan. The newly built cultural park features lifelike simulations that reproduce the styles and features of the British Consulate as well as those of the people from the past. In addition, the cultural park offers professional tour guide services, exquisite cultural and creative merchandise, and high-quality food and beverages.
