“Traditional Country Music” performed by Honky Tonk Experience

Honky Tonk Experience plays traditional country music with reverence and authenticity. The 4-piece band has played

around Richmond for nearly two decades earning them the distinction as one of the best traditional country groups in Central Virginia. Their show features hits made famous by Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, George Jones, Merle Haggard and more.

“A Night with Audra Honaker” performed by Audra Honaker

Join theater sensation Audra Honaker for an entertaining evening filled with song. Audra is a two-time Richmond Theatre Critics Circle Best Actress Award recipient and five-time nominee for productions at Virginia Repertory Theater, Henley Street

Theater, Firehouse Theater, and Swift Creek Mill Theater. Her nationally-known work includes Killing Lincoln and National Geographic.

“Traveling with Road Scholar” presented by Jeffrey Ruggles

Come hear about exciting travel opportunities for lifelong learning in North America, internationally, and afloat. Join Jeffrey Ruggles, Program Administrator for VCU

Road Scholar at the Virginia Center on Aging at Virginia Commonwealth University, to learn about the local Road Scholar program that provides educational travel especially for seniors.

“50's Rock & Roll and More” performed by The Bop Cats

The Bop Cats is a 4-piece rockabilly band from Richmond that is dedicated to preserving the legendary sounds of musical icons such as Elvis, Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran, and the like. This will be a nostalgic night full of familiar favorites including songs from surf, pop, and rock and roll genres.

History of Jazz with Maroon Corey2:30 PM – 4:30 PM in The Commons

This class was made possible thanks to the sponsorship of Covenant Woods’ Raymond T. Holmes, Jr. Community Services Fund, which seeks to serve seniors in the greater Hanover community.

Join local jazz professional Maroon Corey for a two-part series highlighting the four defining characteristics of Jazz: Improvisation, Instruments, Harmony, and Influences. In each session, expect to hear examples of how one of these key elements was expressed by musicians in early 1900's New Orleans, Swing and Big Band music of the 1920's -40s, Bebop, Cool, and Latin Jazz of the 50s and 60s, and even Fusion and Contemporary Jazz from the 70s to the present. You are likely to hear artists as varied as Louis Armstrong, Glen Miller, Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Vijay Iyer within the same 2-hour seminar! In addition to a visual presentation, there will be live musical demonstrations within each seminar. Cost includes two, two hour sessions.

FEE: $20.00 per resident / $22.00 per non-resident; 8 person minimum.

Learn the basics of bidding and play of the hand. This class is for new players and for those with some knowledge of the basics. It will be taught by Certified Bridge Instructor Richard Deyerle of the Richmond Bridge Association. Cost includes 12 hours of instruction and a workbook.

In honor of Black History Month, learn the important role African Americans have played in local history. From early settlement and the slave trade to the establishment of businesses and communities, this presentation will highlight individuals who have defined the city of Richmond and influenced the nation.

“Winter Showcase” performed by New Horizons and Madz

Noted as one of the best choirs in the region, Lee-Davis High School Show Choirs New Horizons and Madz will proudly present two competition shows: “Breath of Life” & “Who’s Bad.” Chorus students will sing and dance in this unique, yearly showcase exclusively for Covenant Woods!

“A Tribute to Patsy Cline” performed by Shannon Gibson Brown

A little more than a week before the anniversary of her untimely passing, we will remember the impact of the legendary Patsy Cline. Local singer and actress Shannon Gibson Brown will bring Patsy’s music to life accompanied by pianist Joshua Wortham. The two have performed Cline’s hits for audiences around Richmond, most recently at the Henrico Theater.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 17TH

“The Battle of Hampton Roads” presented by John Quarstein

One of the ten greatest naval battles in history, the fight between the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia (Merrimack) occurred less than 100 miles from Covenant Woods. Join award-winning historian, author, and preservationist John Quarstein for an enthralling and insightful overview of the historic two-day battle and “the little ship that saved the Union.”

“Timeless Tunes and Comfortable Classics” performed by Charles “King” Arthur

Charles Arthur is a multi-instrumentalist and adjunct professor living in Richmond. As a

veteran musician and band leader of The Bellevue Rhythmaires, Charles has traveled down virtually every musical road. He has mastered a wide variety of music styles including bluegrass, country, rock & roll, jazz, pop, old-time, and rockabilly. Enjoy a memorable musical mix from this talented vocalist and musician.

“Dixieland Jazz” performed by Doctors of Jazz

On the heels of Mardi Gras, Covenant Woods will transform into New Orleans for a night thanks to the Doctors of Jazz. Comprised of active and emeritus professors, mostly from the University of Richmond, Doctors of Jazz will recreate the work of King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, and other great musicians of the 1920's.

“The Big Cat Year” presented by Ken Conger

Professional wildlife photographer Ken Conger returns to Covenant Woods to share photos captured during his 2019

international adventures to Kenya, India, and Argentina as well as domestic trips to Florida, Oregon, South Carolina and Wyoming. Ken will share photos, stories, animal facts, audio and short videos to provide insight into his craft and the challenges taken to capture stunning wildlife images.

MONDAY, MARCH 23RD

“The Girl Who Won the Revolutionary War” presented by Libby McNamee

In honor of Women’s History Month, join author and historian Libby McNamee to hear about a true story of a local heroine. As 16-year-old Susanna Bolling served dinner to General Cornwallis and his officers

at City Point, VA, in May 1781, she overheard their plans to capture General Lafayette and crush the American rebellion once and for all. Learn about her efforts to inform the Continental Army that changed the course of history.

MONDAY, MARCH 16TH

“A Night in the Emerald Isle” performed by Albafeire

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Albafeire (al-buh-fire). The group name originated from linking the ancient Gaelic name of Scotland, “Alba,” and Ireland, “Eire.” The four-person band uses whistles, pipes, and other authentic Celtic instruments to enchant audiences throughout Central Virginia.
