Federico, bastard son of the Duke of Ferrara, falls in love with Cassandra, his father’s intended bride, and she with him. When the truth of their ‘dishonourable’ union comes to light, the Duke exacts a pitiless revenge. On its cleverly mapped journey towards a violent climax equal to that of any Jacobean playwright, Punishment Without Revenge explores the tragic role of honour in seventeenth century life – cruel, necessary, ineluctable.

This is the first Globe staging of a play from Spain’s Golden Age – with its fascinating correspondences to the drama of Elizabethan England – and a rare chance to see one of Lope’s greatest plays.

Cornwall & Hidalgo, an Enduring Connection is a book that celebrates the historical and cultural ties that link Cornwall, in the UK and the State of Hidalgo in Mexico. The historical connection between the two far-flung communities of Hidalgo and Cornwall is a story ofdetermination, courage and in many instances, of great necessity. It is a story that both amazes and inspires, and in recent years has formed the basis for extensive research and documentation. It forms the most important historical connection between men andwomen from Mexico and Great Britain, sharing a common past and a common heritage of honour, pride and courage, notwithstanding time or distance. H.R.H. The Prince of Wales, in his capacity as Duke of Cornwall, wrote the foreword of this book. “Cornwall & Hidalgo, An Enduring Connection” is a visual book, filled with especiallycommissioned photographs, archive images, maps and documents.

The commissioned work was the responsibility of Mexicanphotographer Diego Echeagaray with the participation of British photographer John Such.

EXHIBITION

Page 9: CULTURAL PROGRAMME septEMBER 2014 - Instituto …londres.cervantes.es/imagenes/File/culture_september14.pdf · from September 2nd to 4th and the special guest is William Chislett,

The project ‘Fuera del Guacal’ (Out of the Cage) was realised with the skilled glassblowers of acclaimed glass manufacturer Nouvel Studio in México City. New life has been breathed into several dormant birdcages, the wire acting as the mould for the liquid glass. The handblown glass bulges through the cage, serving as a metaphor for the imprisoned birds that have now long been gone. The resulting pieces are beautiful vessels, vases and objects in their own right for contemplation.

Gala Carlota Fernández is a Spanish-Méxican designer, now living and teaching in México City. She has substantial design experience, having worked with Jaime Hayón at Fabrica Benetton, as consultant with El Ultimo Grito, as teacher at a range of universities internationally, as well as pursuing her own investigative design work.Foco Rojo , the work by Ariel Rojo a rug handtufted in India by Méx-ican company Odabashian using silk and New Zealand wool. Founded in 1921, Odabashian is one of the most prestigious luxury custom rug brands in the Americas. Based in Miami and México City, it has produced collectible hand-made rugs in collaborations with designers and artists as well as museums.

Sophisticated and controversial, Vicente Aranda is one of Spain’s most renowned filmmakers, and his films - exploring such themes as jealousy, sexual desire or complex social issues - have become cinematic classics. Taking the Prada brothers’ documentary, Vicente Aranda: 50 años de cine, as a starting point, we have dedicated a special feature to him. In it we explore some of the most important films of his career, as well as staging an exclusive interview with him.

TUE 30, 6:30 pm Tiempo del silencio (Time of Silence), directed by Vicente Aranda. In Spanish.

Based on the novel by Luis Martín-Santos, Tiempo de silencio is set in the early years of Franco’s regime and follows the story of a young and ambitious doctor researching cancerous cells in mice. He is wrongly accused of killing a woman, when he was really trying to save her life after a botched abortion. Sex, incest, jealousy, death, post-war misery and lack of enlightenment are all explored here with Aranda’s usual craft and insight.

WED 1 OCTOBER, 6:30 pmSi te dicen que caí (If They Tell You I Fell), directed by Vicente Aranda. In Spanish.

In the old quarter of post-Civil War Barcelona, the population strug-gles to survive amongst the ruins and desolation. Living there is Java, a young man determined to leave this misery behind, performing perverse sexual acts for the voyeuristic pleasure of a wealthy man in order to earn some extra money. In one of those encounters he meets Ramona, with whom he inevitably falls in love. Told in the manner of what in Catalan is known as aventis (open-ended stories mixing reality with fantasy told by Catalan children after the Civil War, sitting in circles amongst the ruins), the film is fascinating and complex. It was adapted from the novel by Catalan author Juan Marsé.
