Cultural Life2

Dear Guests and Citizens of Potsdam

This year I want to invite you again for a cultural discovery tour through the city of Potsdam. I promise you it will be worthwhile. Tried-and-true offerings – the music festivals, the day of the open studios, the city festivals – will continue

this year. New offerings such as the “Easter Holidays Potsdam” are in the planning. For 2013 we have again thought of something special. Science and culture, Potsdam’s internationally recognized trademarks, are sometimes seen as opposing interests. However, if we understand culture as an entirety that

embodies the intellectual and artistic expressions of a society, then there is no conflict. Therefore the city of Potsdam is presenting opportunities to experience culture and science in an integrated program so that they can be enjoyed together. Perhaps you would like to explore Potsdam by bicycle – feel free – according to a survey of the German Bicycle Association, ADFC, Potsdam is one of the best places in Germany for bicycling. As part of the music festivals there is even a bicycle concert! Regardless of when and how you explore Potsdam, I wish you an interesting experience and great fun.

1 Künstlermesse Art Brandenburg

The Art Brandenburg artists’ fair provides a compact overview of trends and positions among artists in Bran-denburg. The broad range of contem-porary art includes painting, graphics, and sculpture as well as photography, video, and performance art. Current developments and experimental art can be seen next to traditional works.

Since its founding in 2005, the artists’ fair has become a model fair for visual arts in Brandenburg and a magnet for collectors, curators, and art enthusiasts.

More than a trade show, the biannual fair provides an incomparable informa-tion base for the arts in Brandenburg. Unlike at other art fairs, the artists themselves are present at their booths to present their work, offer it for sale, and enter into a dialogue with the public.

2 Brandenburgischer Kunstverein Potsdam e.V. – Exhibition Pavilion on Freund-schaftsinsel

The art association Brandenburgischer Kunstverein Potsdam has been exhibiting outstanding contemporary works of art in the pavilion on the island of Freund-schaftsinsel since April 2011. Visitors can see international art in the middle of one of the most beautiful historic garden monuments of Brandenburg. Exhibitions of contemporary art and experimental styles enter into a dialogue with the modernist glass architecture, built in 1973, and the Foerster Garden ensemble. The art association not only addresses art enthusiasts, it also seeks to attract a larger audience for the adventure of exploring the arts. Consequently the association’s exhibitions are often presented in an unusual way, interacting with the architecture or opening up towards the garden in attempts to free the visual arts from the ivory tower of the art world. After the political change, the Brandenburgische Kunstverein was one of

the first art associations to be founded in Germany’s new federal states. The association has recently introduced an arts program in various other regions of Brandenburg.

3 Brandenburgischer Kulturbund e.V. – Museum „Im Güldenen Arm“

The small Baroque half-timber house with its tradesman’s plaque with surrounding cherubs above the door catches the eye of every visitor to Hermann-Elflein-Straße. Inside the 275-year old former home of the sculptor and cooper Ehrhardt, diverse works by contemporary regional as well as international artists are shown in various exhibitions. In contrast, the upper floor displays the functional ceramics collection of Siegfried Lachmann from Potsdam. The handcraf-ted pieces reflect aspects of everyday life from the past three centuries. During the summer months, the picturesque

inner courtyard of the museum building becomes a place for public readings, film screenings, and small concerts.

4-17 Galleries and Associations

In recent years a well functioning net-work for contemporary visual arts has been established in Potsdam among the art associations, the Brandenburg Visual Arts Association, galleries and studio communities. Various initiatives such as exhibition projects and accompanying

theme-related activities draw attention to special venues for the arts in Potsdam. Through their presence and professional exhibition activities, art associations have a predominant positive influence on the artistic climate of the city. Through the different profiles of the associations, galleries, and studio communities, a diverse exhibition program has been introduced to Potsdam that has met with recognition both within and outside the region. The work of the various art institutions is an important component of cultural life in Potsdam and exem-plary of private civic involvement and communal support in the contemporary visual arts. The individual venues for the arts help to develop cooperation projects, for instance, with partners outside the region and in other coun-tries, employing specific local resources and gaining a wider audience as well as circles of friends for the visual arts.

18 Day of Open Art Studios in Potsdam

How are works of art created? What motivates painters, sculptors, and performance artists to create works of art? What is the everyday life of an artist like? The day of the open art studios

“Tag der offenen Ateliers” in Potsdam, under the patronage of culture deputy Dr. Iris Jana Magdowski, is an excellent opportunity to find answers to these questions. On May 5, 2013, 46 art studios and workshops will open their doors to the public in Potsdam. Among the wide array of diverse artistic works, extraordinary pieces can be discovered. Interested visitors will be able to gain insights into the artistic process, converse with artists or can be creative themselves. A huge artistic potential has developed during the past decade in Potsdam as well as in Brandenburg. The day of open art studios in Potsdam represents an important platform for the artistic-cultural exchange among all participants.

Festivals 8

19 The Bohemian Weavers’ Festival

The Bohemian Weavers’ festival celebrates the more than 250-year old tradition of the immigrants from Bohemia who were brought to Brandenburg by Frederick II in the middle of the 17th century, for whom he had built the section of “Nowawes.”

A wide range of traditional crafts are featured, including weaving, spinning, pottery making, forging, and felting; international artists, actors, magicians, musicians, and puppeteers give this historic festival its special character. Guests are enthusiastic about the diverse and attractive children’s program, which provides many opportunities for participation. Also featured are culinary specialties from Bohemia such as dumplings and beer. Cooks, beekeepers, and vintners and their products round off a visit to the festival. With its enchanting character and the wonderful surroundings of Weberplatz in Babelsberg, the festival is among the most beautiful events in

Potsdam and attracts thousands of new guests each year from Potsdam, Berlin, and all of Germany.

20 Potsdamer Erlebnisnacht

On July 27, more than 40 restaurant owners and retailers will invite the public to the Baroque historic center of Pots- dam for what is by now the ninth city festival, “Potsdamer Erlebnisnacht.” While strolling through Potsdam’s his toric inner city, citizens and their guests will experience music, art, and cultural events along with many wonderful surprises. Growers from the area will present regional and seasonal food and produce. Not only will there be dancing on the squares of Potsdam but also cooking! Cooks from various restaurants of the city will present their skills and ask guests to smell, taste and sample the food.

21 Stadt für eine Nacht

On June 22 and 23, 2013, the protago-nists of culture, science, and the creative sector from all of Potsdam and Brandenburg come together to inhabit an illuminated night-time city. The all-night event, “Stadt für eine Nacht,” is an unusual artistic installation in the heart of the Schiffbauergasse neighbor-hood. Small tents, stages, and containers will generate a maze of alleys, meeting points, and nooks in which conversations, experiments, and special discovery journeys can take place, creating a lively place of diverse interactions. From this creative hub, visitors may continue to the nearby cultural venues of Schiffbauergasse to enjoy a many-faceted cultural program of art, dance, literature, music, theater and film. Admission to the event is free and in the summer of 2012 around 25,000 visitors came to the vibrant “city within the city.” This year marks the fourth anniversary for the event “Stadt für eine Nacht.”

Potsdam’s biggest open-air festival will take place from June 28-30. The Potsdam public utilities company, Stadtwerke, invites their customers and visitors to Potsdam for a festival featuring classical, rock, and pop music. The Stadtwerke Festival is an event for young and old and the whole family; admission is free. Every year the unique mixture of music attracts tens of thousands of enthusiastic people to the leisure park, Neue Lustgarten, in central Potsdam. An additional attraction is the adventure venue Stadtwerke Erlebnis-

welt, where visitors may participate in various activities and games inform themselves about Potsdam’s public utilities. 23 Tulip Festival in the Dutch Quarter

Something special will be happening once again in Potsdam’s Dutch quarter on April 13 and 14, 2013. As in the days when the brick houses were built, wooden clogs will clatter in the cobblestone streets, and people will call out words to each other in Dutch. Kniepertjes, or Dutch waffles, will be baked between hot irons over a fire. This is the time to taste Dutch specialties such as Matjes herring, cheese, pancakes, Poffertjes, and Dutch gin,

Jenever. And of course, the Tulip Festival visitors can enjoy the scent of thousands of tulips. Historic crafts and costumes paint a colorful and vivid image of Dutch culture. Dutch music and dance groups will entice visitors to join in and children can find out what it is like to walk in wooden clogs.

24 Filmpark Babelsberg

With its unique mixture of entertainment, information and sets for film and television programs, Filmpark Babels-berg is an ideal destination in the Berlin-Brandenburg region. Between Easter and Halloween, visitors can watch a spectacular show of stunts or become part of the staging for the “making-of” show for “The Three Musketeers in 3D” or for a television show at television Studio 1. Visitors also will learn about the tricks of the film trade in the “Traumwerker” studio, the cinema exhibition “Das Sandmännchen – Aben-teuer im Traumland,” or in a guided tour through the “Original GZSZ outdoor set.” The first interactive XD-Adventure Cinema and the 4D-Action Cinema provide all the necessary thrills. An audio guide provides a great soundtrack, including inside stories about the Filmpark and the over 100-year old history of the Babelsberg Filmstadt. “Prinz Eisenherz,” a restaurant with medieval atmosphere, invites visitors to indulge and to attend imaginative dinner shows.

25 International Student Film Festival “sehsüchte”

Aimed at film addicts, the sehsüchte festival will kick off again in Potsdam Babelsberg from April 23-28, 2013. For the 42nd time, the “Konrad Wolf” Academy for Film and Television will conduct Europe’s biggest student film festival. Hosted by students from the masters program of media sciences and many assistants from other programs, young people from international film and television are invited to Potsdam, where

the best films by young film-makers will be screened at three venues: the Thalia Programmkinos Potsdam, the Konrad Wolf Academy, and on the grounds of the Babelsberg studios. The festival not only presents exciting and innovative works by young film-makers from all over the world, it also fosters a unique atmos-phere in the middle of Germany’s cinematographic headquarters.

26 Thalia Cinema

The Thalia cinema is located in Potsdam Babelsberg and according to research dates back to 1918. In 1996 the cinema was closed for renovations, reopening a year later with four cinema halls and 709 seats altogether. This complex became the Thalia Programm Kinos in 2001. A small multiplex cinema that used to show highly commercial films was converted into an art house cinema that has been winning annual awards from both the

federal and state governments for its outstanding yearly program; in 2012 the cinema received the highest award of the BKM for the best youth and children’s program. The cinema has been a member of “Europa Cinemas” since 2004. True to the motto “vom Bauch in den Kopf” or “from the guts to the brain,” the program offers a selection of art films and family entertain-ment. Besides showing many film series, the cinema features discussions on film often attended by directors, producers, actors and other experts.

Working with writers and actors, the employees of the Brandenburg Bureau of Literature plan more than 50 public readings annually. The readings take place in cooperation with libra-ries, theaters, publishers, book stores, galleries and museums in the federal state of Brandenburg. The Branden-burg Literature Association, founded in 1994, oversees the Brandenburg Bureau of Literature. According to its statutes, the association seeks to “support – through various activities – literary writing in its diverse forms in the federal state of Brandenburg.” The Brandenburg Bureau of Literature is funded by the Brandenburg Ministry for Natural Sciences, Research and Culture.

31 Exhibtion on the Rebuilding of the Garrison Church

The massive belfry of Garrison Church, its modest Baroque architecture and its renowned chimes were once a symbol for Potsdam. The church was a commemorative site of the Napoleonic wars, a site of unification of the Reformed Church and Lutherans, an involuntary stage for the “Day of Potsdam” in 1933, and a spiritual center

for many of those persons involved in the attempt to assassinate Hitler on July 20, 1944. The church burnt down during a British bombing raid on April 14, 1945. The ruin was detonated in 1968, following a decision by the SED leadership. Today a new exhibition displays the history of the church from its founding in 1732 by King Friedrich Wilhelm I to the detonation. The exhibit promotes reconstruction of the Garrison Church and presents the future use of this significant “site of commemoration” as a church and a place for contempla-tion and commemoration. Contributors to the rebuilding of the church will be recognized through bricks bearing each donor’s signature.

32 Memorial Lindenstraße

More than any other place in Potsdam, the Gedenkstätte Lindenstraße represents the recurrent political persecution and violence of the 20th century. It also commemorates the overcoming of that persecution and violence in the peaceful revolution of 1989–1990. The story of the victims of political persecution and imprisonment between 1933 and 1989 is presented in a four-part exhibition at the building on Lindenstrasse, the site where this history took place

• 1933–1945 Prison for political prisoners and forced labor; seat of the Potsdam Hereditary Health Court (Exhibition opening: summer 2013)

• 1945–1952 Detention center and prison and site of the court of the Soviet Secret Service

• 1952–1989 Stasi detention center and prison

In 1989 the peaceful revolution forced the end of imprisonment for political reasons in the GDR. With the loss of

power of the SED party, the Potsdam Stasi District Administration relinquished its pretrial detention prison. In early 1990 the opposition forces in the district of Potsdam seized the building as a “House of Democracy.”

33 Memorial at Leistikowstraße

From 1945 until the 1980s, the central remand prison of the Soviet military counterespionage was located at Leistikowstraße 1. Unlike most other prisons of its kind, the former vicarage of the evangelical church association, which was transformed into a prison, is well preserved in disturbing authenticity. The history of the building and the associated fates of prisoners are the focus of the new permanent exhibition that opens in spring 2012. The number of people imprisoned here by the intelligence is unknown. Even today, the preserved cells with wooden beds, detention rooms, walled up doorways and windows, massive prison bars and screens, as well as the remains of the gates and day release cells testify to repression and injustice. The many engravings in German and Russian, still visible on the underground cell walls, impressively demonstrate the deprivation of rights and isolation of the prisoners.

34 House of Brandenburg-Prussian History

In the historic royal carriage house and stables visitors today find vivid evidence of nine centuries of Brandenburg history. The permanent exhibition on Branden-burg and its inhabitants “Land und Leute – Geschichten aus Brandenburg-Preu-ßen” displays more than 400 original objects, photos, films and interactive media stations concerning the topic. They open up a broad sweep of history – including the time of the Slavs, the achievements of Cistercian monks, and continuing up to the new founding of

Brandenburg in 1990. Highly valued, art historically significant pieces are exhibited alongside seemingly trivial but illustrative evidence of everyday culture – from the smallest object, a flea from the time of the plague, recognizable only through the magnifying lens, to the largest, an antique car from the 1920s. A special attraction is a three-dimensional, interac-tive city model, through which one can explore Potsdam as a Prussian residential city, a garrison, and an administrative center. Everyday life and the dictatorship of the GDR are illustrated through items on private loan from contemporary eyewitnesses and through audio stations and film sequences.

35 Jan Bouman House

The Jan Bouman House in the Dutch Quarter is a typical gabled house from 1735 and thus a particular gem of Potsdam architecture. It is the first of the urban settlement homes of the 18th century to be made accessible to the public on all floors, and it contains the greatest amount of original building material. The restored ensemble of front building, courtyard, timber framed outbuilding, and kitchen garden has been preserved in its original form. Every day throughout the year in the Jan Bouman House, one can picture the Dutch Quarter as it originated 270 years ago and imagine its inhabitants and their surroundings. The reconstructed stoves in the kitchens of the building are a distinctive feature of the house. In the springtime historic tulip varieties bloom forth in the garden. Special exhibitions convey information about Dutch topics or focus on Dutch artists. Guided tours are available upon request even outside regular opening hours.

36 Museum Alexandrowka

The Russian Alexandrowka Colony in Potsdam was built in 1826 by the Prussian King Friederich Wilhelm III as a memorial to the Russian Czar Alexander I. Since 1999 the ensemble of 13 block houses, inside the park designed by Peter Josef Lenné, has been inscribed

into the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Museum Alexandrowka, located in house number 2, documents the circumstances that led to the building of the Alexandrowka Colony. The museum, garden and park form an easily walkable historic monument in Russian National style. In addition the museum oversees over 2,000 square meters of orchard with more than 500 fruit trees, as part of the reconstructed park by Lenné. A bistro in the former stables and an outdoor café open during summer months provide visitors places to relax and enjoy the pleasant surroundings. A museum shop sells souvenirs and literature. The museum has thus become a popular place for communica-tion and information.

37 Museum Fluxus+

This museum of modern and contem-porary art has been in Potsdam for five years. The permanent exhibition is divided in three parts, focusing respectively on Fluxus, Wolf Vostell, and contemporary artists. The selection is based on the specific interests of a private collector and the result is a particularity and uniqueness of conception. Nowhere else in the region can one find such a comprehensive combination of works of art, correspon-dence, objects, relics, and films of the Fluxus movement. The theme is enriched by the works of Wolf Vostell and four contemporary artists, Hella De Santarossa, Constantino Ciervo, Lutz Friedel, and Sebastian Heiner, thus establishing a connection from the 1960s to the present. The connection between art and life, as proclaimed by the artists of Fluxus, is in the foreground of the contemporary art area of the museum as well. Changing exhibitions, a museum shop, and café complement the exhibition.

White storks have entered cultural history as a symbol of spring and the bringer of both babies and good luck. Today we count 19 species of storks worldwide. They are part of our biological diversity and vary in size, color of plumage, and forms of beak. For the first time, all living species of storks worldwide can be seen as prepared specimens at the Museum of Natural Science in Potsdam. Whereas only white and black storks live in Europe, eleven species of storks live in Asia and eight in Africa. The special exhibition “Storks of the Earth” conveys interesting details about the appearance, distribution, habitat, and protection of all existing stork varieties on earth, conveyed through exhibition panels, thematic display cases of biological groups, and a large open exposition. The exhibition also relates new knowledge gained from research on migration of white storks.

39 Nowaweser Weberstube

At Karl-Liebknecht Straße 23, in an old weavers’ cottage built in 1752 is a small museum that provides a vivid view of Babelsberg’s industrial past. Here one is reminded that until 1939 Babelsberg was an independent

industrial town, relatively significant for Brandenburg. Ground plans and old maps show the first housing settle-ments of today’s Babelsberg, among which the weavers’ settlement was the most significant. A large loom fills the front room and weaving utensils such as a spinning wheel and bobbin winder, shuttle and bobbins document the tools of the weavers and recall the hardship of their lives. The back room provides an overview of the industry’s diverse development in Nowawes and Neuendorf. Visitors feel they have been taken back into Babelsberg’s past, gaining a fresh perspective on modern-day Babelsberg and a better understanding of the autonomous nature of this part of Potsdam.

40 Potsdam Museum – Forum for Art and History

Potsdam is an international city. Potsdam is the site of the edict of toleration. Potsdam served as a “world stage.” Potsdam is a city of art and culture.

All of these facets of the city – past and present – can now be explored in a contemporary space through exhibitions, events, and presentations at the Potsdam Museum – Forum for Art and History. Following the completed restoration of the old town hall in August 2012, the museum opened its doors with the exhibition, Friedrich und Potsdam. Die Erfindung (s)einer Stadt. In 2013 the museum will open up its entire exhibition space. The 100th anniversary of the birth of the internationally acclaimed artist Siegward Sprotte, an honorary citizen of Potsdam, is the occasion for the first big art exhibition in the municipal museum. The Potsdam Museum, in cooperation with the Schleswig Holstein State Museum for Art and Culture at Schloss Gottorf, presents the retrospective exhibition on 600 square meters. The

exhibition introduces the artist’s develop-ment between the poles of figurative and abstract painting through groupings of his selected work. A permanent exhibition, divided into eleven thematic modules, will outline the history of

Potsdam, its civic shaping as well as artistic and cultural development and will follow a biographical approach, in particular. On about 700 square meters of the first floor, objects from the museum’s own collections will provide

information about native and immigrated inhabitants, scientists and architects, electors, monarchs, and craftworkers. They convey a vivid image of civic life and everyday culture as well as of European-inspired architectural styles. Selected objects are either products of a flourishing economy or testimony to significant turning points in history. In addition to original exhibits such as furniture, textiles, paintings, sculptures, and maps, the educational value of the museum is intensified through models, audio- and media stations. The history of the city is conveyed to children, youth, and adults through various means and offerings; tourists will understand Potsdam as a cultural-historic building block of Europe.

Villa Schöningen is located next to Glienicke Bridge and thus on the boundary between Berlin and Potsdam, between east and west – the place where during the Cold War era spies were exchanged as the world looked on. The permanent exhibit at Villa Schönin-gen is dedicated to the symbolic and historic significance of the Glienicke Bridge. Here one can get some idea of the drastic border conditions that existed between the former East Germany and West Germany. Villa Schöningen also hosts changing

exhibitions of contemporary art that seek to open up current socially significant topics. The traveling exhibitions of the sculpture park also focus on works of art that, in the broadest sense, deal with phenomena of the contemporary world. In addition Villa Schöningen also has a café for relaxation and enjoyment. .

43 Barocker Theater sommer Sanssouci

Presented by the Potsdam ensemble I CONFIDENTI in conjunction with Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin Brandenburg, the Baroque Summer The-ater 2013 at Sanssouci focuses this year thoroughly on the Commedia dell’Arte. “I casi della fame e dell’ amore” (Hunger and Love) is the name of the musical farce in which we meet the famous masks and characters of the Comédie Italienne. For example, Arlecchino and Brighella enter a sad competition: Guess which of the two has fasted the longest? Arlecchino wins – by one day. But before the two finally get something to eat and Colombina and Arlecchino delight in their mutual love, numerous obstacles must be overcome. Above all, senile Pantalone constantly hinders Arlecchino from declaring his love to the one he adores. This colorful Italian popular comedy from the 16th century will be shown at the New Palace Theater at Sanssouci for the first time in German.

44 Cammermusik Potsdam

The ensemble “Cammermusik Potsdam” was founded in 2003 by the violinist Wolfgang Hasleder in a reference to the royal concerts, or “Cammermusiken,” that were held under King Friederich II at Sanssouci from 1747 until his death. As a departure point for its musical time travel, the ensemble has chosen the “Berlin

classical period,” including such composers as J.J. Quantz, C.P.E. Bach, and J.G. Graun. The concert series, “Harmonia Mundi – Musica Coelestes,” testifies to this period, as does the “Venezianische Nacht,” which is inspired by the atmosphere at the church Friedenskirche with its adjoining ambulatories and parks. The music, along with poetry, dance, musical theater, concerts and treats for the palate are

united yearly during a long night of artistic synthesis. The concerts by the Baroque orchestra “Cammermusik Potsdam” and its chamber ensemble, the “Kleine Cammer-Music,” thus imbue the legacy of music from Brandenburg with a new brilliance, performed on historic instruments to achieve a high point in the musical life of Potsdam.

45 Internationaler Orgelsommer

The 23rd International Organ Festival will be opened by Christian Skobowsky on June 26 at the church Erlöserkirche. Sko-bowsky, currently organist at Ratzeburg Cathedral, was born in Potsdam and is one of the most outstanding organists of his generation. Again this year more than half of the guest performers come from other countries. Kevin Birch from America and Markus Stepanek from Salzburg, Austria will return to Potsdam for the festival. Kilian Nauhaus, an organist at the church Französische Friedrichstadt-kirche in Berlin, has given several guest performances in Potsdam. Church music director Matthias Jacob, the church orga-nist of Friedenskirche and director of the concert series, will be playing the organ at Friedenskirche. Over the years, the two featured organs have proven themselves worthy in their contrasting qualities. The symphonic Woehl organ at Friedenskirche has provided a rich sound since 2004 for French organ music of the 19th century, whereas the Schuke organ of Erlöserkir-che, built in 1964, is especially suitable for music from the Baroque period.

Building on its tradition of excellent church music, the music association “Musik an der Erlöserkirche” has developed over the last decade – under the direction of Ud Joffe – into a widely known center for music. With its very

good acoustics, the Schuke organ and 900-seat hall, the church provides outstanding conditions for musical development. At the core of this artistic work is the Potsdamer Kantorei, an outstanding concert choir with more than 120 singers. Particular attention is directed to the young people in the children’s and youth choirs. The New Chamber Choir Potsdam – winner of the

German choir competition and regular participant in opera productions such “Carmen,” staged in 2012 at Seefest-spiele Berlin – embodies the highest semi professional quality. The most recently founded new choir is the senior choir, whose members include well trained singers who were formerly members of the large Potsdam choirs. The autumn festival “VOCALISE” is another colorful highlight in the musical life of Potsdam.

53 Oratorienchor Potsdam

Ekkehard Tietze founded the Oratorien-chor Potsdam in 1957. In 1981 Matthias Jacob took over the direction of this inter-parochial Protestant choir. For many years, more than 100 enthusiastic singers have presented the great works of oratorial literature in Friedenskirche at Sanssouci. The most recent example was the performance of Max Reger’s 100th Psalm, which is rarely heard because it presents extreme difficulties. Besides a standard repertoire, the choir is dedicated to works of the 20th century; as for example, Frank Martin’s “Golgotha,” presented in 2010. Another remarkable event was the staging of Alfred Schnittke’s Requiem in 1989, the year of the political change. A worldwide premiere performance was realized with Gerhard Rosenfeld’s “Amore e Sapi-enza.” Traveling abroad, the choir performed in Italy in 1992 and 1996, in Prague in 1998, and in Kaliningrad, Russia in 2000, where the choir sang Bach’s mass in B-minor. The most

recent guest performance was the repetition of Reger’s Psalm at the Cottbus State Theater. The choir will perform Verdi’s Requiem in honor of the composer’s anniversary in 2013.

number of contenders. The music will be as diverse as the German music scene itself. As before, this year’s event will take place in the large auditorium of the Thalia Cinema in Babelsberg and will be part of a larger program of several days. Song meets film, a successful match.

For several years the Potsdam Jazz Days, the “Potsdam Kunst-Genuss-Tour,” and European Heritage Days, “Tag des offenen Denkmals,” have been presented under the umbrella of the Potsdamer Dreiklang in Potsdam’s calendar of events. In a short few days, Dreiklang uniquely combines aspects of historic conservation, enjoyment of art in museums and galleries, and a long jazz tradition.

Visitors to the Jazz Days can expect concerts at unusual places – historic locations of enjoyment in Potsdam. The blend of offerings and sites appeals to

visitors of all ages and tastes. Renowned national and international titans of jazz will delight their audience with a mixture of classic and modern jazz, rock music and pop.

Following the motto, “Watch and Listen, Taste and Enjoy” the Potsdamer Kunst-Genuss-Tour takes visitors through contemporary art and historic exhibitions in galleries and museums of Potsdam’s inner city.

The European Heritage Days, traditio-nally held on the second Sunday in September in Germany, will be conduc-ted this year with the motto “Beyond the good and the beautiful: Uncomfortable monuments?” The motto refers to central issues of historic conservation to be discussed publicly on that day: What should be conserved and why? What is it that makes a monument uncomfor-table and why? Are there really any “uncomfortable” monuments? In many venues, visitors will find jazz concerts, in addition to guided tours and lectures on architecture in a unique atmosphere especially created for this day. As in previous years, many visitors will be

59 Vocalise 2013 – Potsdam Vocal Weeks

Thanks to its dramaturgical diversity and its international flair, the autumn festival, “Vocalise,” is one of the region’s most important music events. The festival provides outstanding Potsdam choirs with an attractive platform. Renowned soloists as well as vocal and instrumen-tal groups enrich the program. Over and over, the festival calls into question the boundaries between spiritual and secular music, between music from different religious traditions, and between the presumed categories of serious music and music as entertainment.

Music from foreign or remote cultures has been introduced many times, but the event also includes German vocal music and the mass, as one of the oldest forms of sacred music. Following the 2012 festival focus on spiritual poe-try, which surprised the audience with the common roots of Muslim, Jewish, and Christian scores, this year’s vocal event – with the motto “Viva la Nation” – will focus on 100 years of European development charged by issues of national identities and common values.

The chamber choir, Vocalkreis Potsdam, is conducted by the director of church music, Matthias Jacob, who founded the choir in 1984 as an inter-parochial choir. The choir is dedicated primarily to spiritual a cappella music from the 16th century to the present. Regularly featured in the program are secular and choral symphonic works, rarely performed compositions, and premiere performan-ces of works, especially pieces by Potsdam composers. The 25 members of the choir sing mostly in the churches of the state of Brandenburg and in Berlin. The choir has also performed in Vienna, Salzburg, Pisa, Rome, and Mexico. This independently administered youth center opened in 2011 with five buildings and around 12,000 square meters of space. Located near the Potsdam main station and designated as a space for independently organized youth activities, it has become a barrier-free, lively center where young people can experiment with new ideas and fulfill their need for self-expression.

The youth center freiLand is frequented primarily by young Potsdamers from age 12 to 27. Many young people use the center for creating events and activities because of its diverse spaces and its low-barrier accessibility. The youth center has developed into a place that is open for all youth, as long as they do not restrict others through racist, violent, homophobic, sexist or otherwise discriminating behavior.

64 Open Churches in Potsdam

In travel not only our bodies are moved; often we are moved on the inside, too. Christian churches have long accompa-nied people on their journey through life and have provided a place for examining the fundamental questions of our existence. The churches are places of contemplation, music for meditation, prayer and ritual; always with the weight of tradition and often filled with mystery.

Many churches in Potsdam open their doors daily especially during the summer months, and invite people to spend time and – removed from hectic, everyday life – to reflect on the reason for our existence.

The open churches invite people to discover the architectural spaces of Christian belief. Volunteer members of the church community are happy to introduce their churches through on-site tours, including guided tours for groups upon request.

65 XV. Potsdamer Schlössernacht at Sanssouci Park

Once a year the UNESCO World Heritage site at Sanssouci springs to life in a wonderful way. On August 17, during the Potsdamer Schlössernacht, the doors to lavish halls will open, park areas will be specially illuminated and many romantic corners between hedges and fountains will provide opportunities for walking, dreaming, and enjoyment of the arts. With acting, dance, readings and music, numerous participants will turn the fifteenth Potsdamer Schlössernacht into a festival of fantasy. Walking in the footsteps of Friedrich II, visitors will come across characters of his gallant court at every turn, and, in addition, will be able to listen in passing to the tales of age-old trees in Lenné’s landscaped park. Among the crowning pleasures are special nighttime guided tours behind the palace facades, exquisite culinary provisions, and the traditional musical fireworks in front of the New Palace. Wilhlem IV, comprises an inner courtyard with a water basin surrounded by tasteful arcades, colonnades, and galleries as well as by two cabinets in Moorish and Roman Pompeian style. From imposing outer staircases one can see the Pomona temple designed by Karl Friederich Schinkel around 1800.

Christmas in Potsdam50

77-81 Christmas Markets in Potsdam

A walk through the UNESCO cultural landscape of palaces, lakes and gardens around Sanssouci during Christmas is quite a special experience. Discover the royal ensembles, idyllic parks and frozen lakes veiled in gentle white. Five traditional Christmas markets at historic locations and an an atmospheric cultural program, “Klingender Advent,” will charm the visitors to the royal summer seat Potsdam even in winter. The central Christmas market “Blauer Lichterglanz” at Brandenburger Straße lights up the Baroque pedestrian zone starting in November. This Christmas market will impress the whole family with its remarkable pyramid of lights and the huge fairy-tale stage at Luisenplatz. The scent of culinary delights will take you past traders, artisans, and show people and you will find last-minute presents in the cosy warmth of the stores, galleries, restaurants, and cafés of Potsdam’s in-ner city. An enchanted walk will take you from there across the magnificent park of Sanssouci to the Bornstedt Crown

Estate, where the “Romantic Christmas Market” in a historic setting by the lake will carry you back to the royal age of Frederick the Great.

Potsdam’s architecture in the settlers’ quarters reveals much about Potsdam’s tolerance and openness to immigrants during the ups and downs of European history. During the first three advent weekends, Potsdam celebrates the culture of our neighboring countries in succession: at the Bohemian Christmas Market at Weberplatz in Babelsberg, the Polish Christmas market Sternenmarkt in the courtyard Kutschstallhof at Neue Markt, and the Dutch Christmas market “Sinterklaas” in the Dutch Quarter.

SCIENCE IN POTSDAM

»In every field, prior surmise precedes later knowledge.«

Alexander von Humboldt

Science for the future Wissenschaft für die Zukunft

Potsdam is a city of knowledge. About 9,000 of its approximately 156,000 inhabitants work at the scientific institutions of the capital of Land Brandenburg. No other city in Germany has a larger number of scientists per capita than Potsdam.

Currently almost 25,000 students are enrolled at the University of Potsdam, the University of Applied Science Potsdam, the Film and Television University „Konrad Wolf“ (HFF), and the Univer-sity of Applied Science for Sports and Management. In addition, more than 40 scientific institutions are based in the region, among them Max Planck and Fraunhofer institutes, facilities of the Leipniz Association and Helmholtz centres as well as the privately funded Hasso Plattner Institute for Software Systems Engineering (HPI).

The State Capital Potsdam and the city’s scientific institutions are pleased to invite both citizens and visitors to participate in the offers of local science scene. Many institutes have planned events for the general public such as “open house“ activities. On June 8, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., we invite you to come to a special event named “A Thousand Questions – One City”. Catch up on the latest Potsdam research, learn about projects, and experience science first-hand and presented for all age groups. The event will take place at the Golm Science Park, at the university location near the New Palace, and in the city centre.

In the Education Centre “Bildungsforum”, the City and State Library, the Adult Education Centre “Volkshochschule”, and the Science Floor “Wissenschaftsetage” are under one roof. A new meeting place for all citizens will emerge right in the city centre. The Science Floor will, in many ways, make science come alive. Planned events include an exhibition on Potsdam’s scientific landscape, the series of mastermind lectures “Potsdamer Köpfe” as well as changing expositions and congresses.
