Hello and welcome to the first issue of ‘CULTMZK’. I’m excited for the journey ahead with a self-produced magazine. What you will see here is a fusion of my tastes including dance music in both the commercial and underground spheres, the indie rock scene and just about everything in-between. The first issue will contain reviews on both albums and singles, the next artists to breakthrough into the charts, and what our recommended listens are. We also have our features on the latest artists, such as Secondcity who recently claimed the No.1 spot in the UK Singles Charts, as well as our thoughts on Disclosure & Friend Within’s track ‘The Mechanism’ and we introduce MK as our ‘Insight’ feature for this first edition. It’s going to be very exciting indeed. Christian Tracey, Editor & Producer ‘Special Thanks to Ryan Weal for his chart predictions.’

The World At Their Feet

“incessant, incessant, Habitual conceptualisation”

Disclosure seek the Friend Within to unleash their new track, ‘The Mechanism’. They’re back, and with a bang.

Disclosure & Friend Within ‘The Mechanism’ Out Now

S ix minutes and 17 seconds of “incessant, incessant, habitual, conceptualisation” aptly

describes another excellent record from the two brothers from Reigate, Surrey.

Disclosure teamed up with fellow house music producer, Friend Within, who’s best known for his remix of ’90’s dance classic, ’Renegade Master’ to create ‘The Mechanism’. This in turn reaffirms themselves as the young masters of the house music revolution.

House music is currently dominating the Singles Chart and after their successful debut album ‘Settle’ that flew to Number 1 in May 2013 and successful singles, Disclosure are showing no signs of a difficult second album period and are back, firing on all 12 cylinders in the process.

Undoubtedly, fans are excited to see that dance music has shaken youth subculture up once again

and it’s no doubt that Disclosure are the pioneers of this new movement.

‘The Mechanism’ has seen strong airplay from DJ’s such as Annie Mac, who ushers in the start of the weekend on Friday evenings on Radio 1. This song isn’t likely to chart, but will

certainly be an underground hit with nightclubs and avid followers of the house duo.

A new album hasn’t been announced, but on this basis, we’re all excited to see what Disclosure will bring to the table next.

Insight - MK

The American House DJ is the feature of our ‘Insight’ series.

Our Pick: Sam Smith - Money On My Mind (MK Remix) Featured on Ministry of Sound: Marbella Sessions 2014

M K, AKA Mark Kinchen has been around longer than most people

think. Active since 1989, when house was popular in the UK and across the pond in its first guise, Acid House. His track ‘Always’ was originally released in 1992 with success in both the UK and the US Dance Charts. His classic was given a reboot in late 2013 by Route 94, which propelled both their careers in the right direction at the perfect time of asking.

MK has been influential in the growth of popular dance music with numerous remixes of pop records, culminating in a surprise No.1 with Storm Queen’s ’Look Right Through’ in November 2013, which truly placed house music into the mainstream charts.

Since his success, this man has no doubt been a very busy producer, delivering a consistent high level of quality in his remixes, giving off an excellent vibe of high energy, main room dance music in the process.

It’s no wonder that MK has five tracks on the latest edition of Ministry of Sound’s ‘Marbella Sessions’ album, an album that has the joy of announcing the start of the British summer, with a selection of 40 club bangers and the freshest house tracks, with a few older records you can’t help but sing along to. Which is more than any other DJ on the tracklisting.

Our pick of MK’s remixes on the new album is a total refresh of a recent number one from Sam Smith. MK’s remix of ‘Money on My Mind’ has given the track a huge overhaul and could easily be considered as the original, if listeners were hearing the track for the first time, so it’s definitely worth the listen.

We can’t see any signs of MK slowing down yet and his remixes are getting ever stronger.

On a tangent, like the sound of ‘Marbella Sessions’? It’s available to purchase now.

SecondCity

Emerging talent Secondcity hits the top spot at his first attempt. Here’s our thoughts on how emerging talent can hit the higher echelons of the music business.

Secondcity - I Wanna Feel Available to purchase on iTunes.

Such is the power of Dance Music, the ability to reach that coveted number one is easier than ever. Don’t underestimate the quality of music that’s hitting the top spot these days, such as Secondcity’s first chart effort ‘I Wanna Feel’. This is merely the influence the emerging generation have on the rest of the country, as the ability to get behind new artists in their bid to achieve mainstream success has been stronger than ever. There has been 18 different number ones so far this year, with a different artist at number one each week since mid February. American DJ Secondcity, real name as Rowan Harrington who was based in Forest Row, East Sussex in his early life has been active only since 2013. May 2014 has been fruitful as his break-through record hit the top spot in it’s first week of release, with

little knowledge of the record prior to it’s announced release and subsequent chart success. It’s exciting to see more emerging talent getting the deserved recognition of the highest order in the UK Music Scene and its refreshing to witness with independent label’s such as Defected Records and XL Recordings taking it to the big bucks of Syco and Sony.

If you like your music and haven’t already bought Secondcity’s track, ’I Wanna Feel’; now is your chance.

Album Review - The Orwells

The five-piece from Illinois release 11 tracks of pure teen angst. Never has anger sounded so good on a CD.

The Orwells - Disgraceland Out now on both CD & Digital releases Website: www.theorwells.com

c urrently touring in the UK, showcasing their new, quality records with an ever increasing

following from diehard fans and indie rock enthusiasts alike. "11 Teenage Anthems" the icon sized sticker says on the front cover, an instant nod to their target audience. An album jam packed with high-energy and showcasing the quality of their live shows into their second album. Lead singer Mario Cuomo's lyrics on the tracks are of a decent quality to resonate with fellow Orwells fans and teenagers involved in the indie scene alike. The relatively new band, forming in 2009, have seen Radio 1 airplay for their latest records 'Let It Burn' & Dirty Sheets', which are arguably the two most energetic and indie-pop-friendly records on 'Disgraceland'.

The length is the only downside of The Orwells' second effort, rolling in at an abrupt 35 minutes; but the intensity of the 11 tracks on the record more than makes up for this. Overall, a really solid album and expect big things from them in the future, they're still young and maturing their sound, but the live shows are a must see for a great price. The Orwells - Disgraceland scores a very respectable 7/10.

Album Review - Clean Bandit

Classical/Pop fusion hits the mainstream. After three top 40’s and a massive number one, Clean Bandit are on the up with ‘New Eyes’.

Clean Bandit - New Eyes (Limited & Standard Editions) Out now on both CD & Digital releases Website: www.cleanbandit.co.uk

T he title of the album proclaims what all potential listeners should approach Clean

Bandit's debut effort with, a new pair of eyes. Clean Bandit have already seen chart success with 'Rather Be' featuring Jess Glynne in January 2014 as well as a recent top 5 with 'Extraordinary' featuring Sharna Bass. The album is a 51 minute (71 including limited edition material) experience fusing classical music and more modern, chart topping sounds, aptly by using "special tricks, with a computer" to quote ‘Mozart’s House’. It's like nothing else out there in the Album Chart and whether you're a fan of either genre, or simply the concept, it's certainly worth the listen. The first four records featured on 'New Eyes' have already been released and charted well, namely ‘Rather Be’ & Mozart’s House.

Track 10, a favourite at CULTMZK, 'Heart on Fire' we believe should be considered for a future release.

The downside, albeit minor, is the use of many collaborators. Although it gives a breath of fresh air with every listen, the varied range of vocals and styles lacks the consistency we see in some other albums. However, all round, a brilliant album and expect more chart success from the group.

‘New Eyes’ scores 8/10.

Tracklisting

1. ‘Mozart’s House’ 2. ‘Extraordinary’ 3. ‘Dust Clears’ 4. Rather Be 5. A&E 6. Come Over 7. Cologne 8. Telephone Banking 9. Up Again 10. Heart On Fire 11. New Eyes 12. Birch 13. Album Review - The Horrors

The Horrors strike big with their third album, ‘Luminous’.

The Horrors - Luminous Out now on both CD & Digital releases Website: www.thehorrors.co.uk

T he Horrors third album ‘Luminous’ has abso-lutely picked up from where they left off three

years previous with ‘Skying’, delivering the same amazing feelings that their fans experienced just as they did in 2011 with their last album.

‘Luminous’ has been awaited by many indie fans and fans of the band, ever since the announce-ment earlier in the year of the May release date.

The Horror’s title track, ‘So Now You Know’ is the strongest track on the album, with it’s one minute and thirty second intro setting the atmosphere almost perfectly after the first three tracks. The record has been featured on material for Sky Sports F1 coverage of events since the release, coupled with an announcement of the cov-eted ‘Hottest Record in the World’ by Zane Lowe.

Other tracks such as ‘I See You’

which shouldn’t be mixed up for ‘I See Right Through You’ on ‘Skying’, is another very strong track on the album, who’s intro is reminiscent of the late Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder’s disco classic, ‘I Feel Love’ and at 7:30 minutes, is the longest and most euphoric song on the album. Fun fact, The Horrors also covered an excellent unreleased version of house DJ legend Frankie Knuckles ‘Your Love’ shortly after his death for Radio 1’s Live Longue. Overall, Luminous scored a 7/10.

Tracklisting

1. ‘Chasing Shadows’ 2. ‘First Day of Spring’ 3. ‘So Now You Know’ 4. ‘In and Out of Sight’ 5. ‘Jealous Sun’ 6. ‘Falling Star’ 7. ‘I See You’ 8. ‘Change Your Mind’ 9. ‘Mine and Yours’ 10. ‘Sleepwalk’
