18—TIMES, February 10, 2009 www.ballymenatimes.com www.antrimtimes.co.uk ‘Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise’ T HOSE familiar words from Psalm 48 echoed around the newly-rebuilt Reformed Presbyterian Church in Cullybackey last Friday evening as worshippers gathered there to officially open their new premises. The congregation’s Minister, Rev. Philip Moffett, led a very special service of celebra- tion, thanksgiving and worship. As Moderator of Synod of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Ireland, it fell to Rev. David Fallows to ‘perform’ the official open- ing ceremony. Other friends, local ministers and represen- tatives from other sessions of the Northern Presbytery of the Reformed Presbyterian Church joined regular members of the Main Street fellowship on this happy occasion. In total, their new facilities, which amount to a complete rebuild, have cost around £1,200,000. Rev. Philip Moffett explained why the proj- ect came into being, saying: “In 2002 the Session drew up a set of aims and objec- tives for Cullybackey Reformed Presbyterian Church. The aim of the con- gregation is to grow as a living, vibrant God honouring Reformed Presbyterian Church, which will continue to bear witness to future generations.” “One of the objectives to reach this aim was to provide accessible buildings that demonstrate our vision of a vibrant God honouring church.” He went on: “The original church building was erected in 1789 and was eventual demolished in 2007. The building no longer provided a sufficient level of com- fort, functionality or accessibility for our congregation. Therefore, the session and congregation decided that it was time to build a com- plete suite of integrated buildings on the current site”, Rev. Moffett added. Work began in June 2007 with the demol- ishing of the old buildings, and the new structure was complet- ed in December 2008. Quite simply, the planners, architects and builders have delivered something very spe- cial as Rev. Moffett revealed: “We now have one integrated building on the original site. This suite of buildings includes a worship area, sports hall, two kitchens, two minor halls, sever- al classrooms and toilets. It has been built at street level, with the classrooms, minor hall, small kitchen and toilets under- neath.” “The new building will enable us to provide a suitable facility so that future generations in Cullybackey can worship our Great God. As a community of believers we desire to serve God day by day, and our desire is that Jesus Christ should be rec- ognized and honoured as the King of our lives, our homes, our churches and our nation”, he added. Certainly, the Lord Jesus was honoured during a thankful but reverent service of worship where He was praised using the words of Psalms 122, 48, 116 and 84. Rev. Fallows also preached a challenging and inspiring address on John chapter 3. At the reception afterwards Dr David McKelvey, an elder in the congregation, gave a word of thanks to those who con- tributed so much to the building; the architects, builders, fitters etc. As what was a truly memorable night, Rev. Moffett expressed appreciation to everyone who had helped bring the new build to fruition. He stated: “As a congregation we wish to thank all of those who were involved in the build- ing project. In many ways it was a difficult site to build on, but we are very thankful for the safety that God provided for the builders and contractors. The physical building work has been carried out to the highest stan- dard and dedication. We trust that the spiritual building work will also continue to the same level of commitment.” Rev. Moffett concluded: “We would also like to thank the community and those who gave anonymously to the building work. There has been much interest within the community as the old building came down, and then a new building was built up. Finally, thank you to our brothers and sisters in Christ from the Faith Mission hall and from the Methodist church in Cullybackey in allow- ing us to worship in their buildings during our time of “exile!” Also we want to thank the council for allowing us to worship in Ahoghill Commnity Centre.” “Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labour in vain.” Psalm 127.1 Good reason to celebrate ...
