Jonathan Culler, Class of 1916 Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Cornell University, has written extensively about structuralist poetics, critical theory and lyric poetry. His books include Flaubert: The Uses of Uncertainty, Structuralist Poetics: Structuralism, Linguistics and the Study of Literature and Literary Theory: A Very Short Introduction. In this lecture, Culler expands the discussion of poetics developed in his most recent book, Theory of the Lyric, to address the possibilities and potential disadvantages that are opened up by bringing narrative theory to the study of the lyric.
