CThe day that FM was held in Japan for the firsttime ever was the very my first competition (JRCAKanto Summer 2009, on June 2009). In thatcompetition, I finished in last place excludingDNFers. I was disappointed in my results.I heard the next competition (Japan Open 2009, onAugust 2009) will hold FM again, so I practicedseveral times. My speedsolving method is thePetrus method, which is said to be good for FM,and in fact I got several Sub 40move solutions bythe method in the practices. In Japan Open 2009 Igot 41move and won 2nd place. I firstly made it tothe podium. That was the initial trigger, but the day I "really"got into FM came after the competitions. I searchedfor fewest moves on the internet, and found theFMC site: http://fmc.mustcube.net/, which providesweekly online competition. I looked at the pastresults, and many crazy solutions were postedthere. "Crazy" has two meanings: "What? Sub30move many times?" and "What? Why suddenly

UBING DARE : How do you gotinto FM?TOMOAKI OKAYAMA: I think theinitial trigger was the first and secondcompetitions I participated in.

Name: Tomoaki OkayamaNickname: Nothing special. Mostcubers in Japan call me just "Okayamasan" or "Okayama sensei". "san" is akind of "Mr., Ms." and "sensei" meansa teacher, professor, or like that. I'm alecturer in university.Born: Feb. 23, 1982.Place of birth: Fukuroi city, Shizuokaprefecture, Japan.

Status: SingleFavorite color(s) : Cold color like darkblue, and black.Favorite food (s) : Mainly Japanesefoods, such as Sushi, nikujaga (beefand potato stew), grilled fish, Tempura,Soba, and so on. My favorite fruit isJapanese pear. And I love creambasedsweets.Favorite cuber(s) : Guus RazouxSchultz and Mirek Goljan, whoachieved Sub 20move for 1hour FMC(unofficially). I learned many FMCtechniques from their solves.Pet's : (I don't have any pet)

solved? Beyond my comprehension!" Thosesolutions are completely different fromspeedsolving methods, and I was quite impressed. Istrongly wanted to be able to achieve such solutions. So I decided to study those crazy solves and also toparticipate in the competition every week. The firstround I participated in was No. 255, and after thatuntil now I still continue to post my solution everyweek (current round is No. 409).CD : When did you start with cubing?TO: I started cubing in September 2008. Before thattime I never thought I could solve Rubik's cube.CD: Why and who has inspired you to get intoCubing?TO : I remember the day quite well. When I was a Ph.D. student (in September 2008),after dinner, I saw a master's degree student,Masaaki Tanio, solving Rubik's cube in thelaboratory. He said he started cubing a few daysago, to enjoy his free time in a driving school.I was surprised that a usual person in the samelaboratory could master Rubik's cube in only a fewdays, because I had thought a special ability/talentwas required to solve Rubik's cube. But he said anyone can solve Rubik's cube, andtaught me how to solve the first layer. I found ithighly amusing. He went home at 2 o'clock or so, but I was stilleager to learn how to solve the rest. So I searchedthe way on the internet, and at 3 o'clock or so, Iunderstood how to solve it. After that I stillcontinued to practice, half for memorizingalgorithms, and half for just enjoying it. It made meforget the time.

CD : How do you practice FM @ home?TO : I regularly practice FM two times a week.Firstly on Sunday or Monday I do Weeklycompetition at http://www.speedsolving.com/. Secondly on Friday or Saturday I do FMC athttp://fmc.mustcube.net/ (described above). ThisFMC site includes:

(1) 10 min. linear solve (different scramble isgiven from the three below)(2) 1hour official solve(3) no time limit classic solve(4) computer generated solveI usually do (1), not so seriously, but just for fun.I of course do (2), and I believe trying (3) is quiteimportant to refine your FM skill. It provides agood opportunity to reconsider your 1hoursolution, like "how can I improve the 1hoursolution?" and "why the start I got was bad?" andall that. I usually spend 1hour or 2hour for (3).I didn't usually try (4). However, after I got AsR,my mind was changed. The next goal is of courseWR (22move), and I wanted to take a hint forthat from computer's solve. So I decided toinvestigate computer's solve until I would getWR. Fortunately I can stop now.

CD : What is your unofficial moves @ homebefore Czech Open 2012?TO : My best unofficial result for 1hour solvewas 20move, exactly the same as the currentWR. But I'd like to emphasize that I got 20moveseveral times, like weekly competition 201021,FMC round 376, and additional personalattempts.

CD : How was your reaction when the firsttime you have met your favorite cuber GuusRazoux Schultz? Do you remember what hadhe said to you at that time?TO : I remember the day quite well and I'm surehe too.The first time I met him was quite by accident. On that day, I had an appointment via Facebookto meet him at a hotel I booked in Amsterdam. On the way to the hotel, I went to the GVBticketcenter in front of Amsterdam CS to get a onedayticket. When I bought the ticket, I heard a voicefrom the side: "Are you Tomoaki?" I looked atthe side, and I noticed he was Guus RazouxSchultz. I said "Wow, Guus!" and he said "Whata coincidence!" That was the first meeting withhim. It was a nice surprise.CD : Your wishes to all Fewest Moves solvers?TO : I don't have no particular wish to FMsolvers. I respect all the people who try andenjoy FM. Let us keep developing throughfriendly competition, both in official and online!
