WEDNESDAY, JUNE 06 – TRINIDAD (B,L,D) Depart for the Bay of Pigs or Playa Girón, about a 2-hour drive. A force of U.S.-backed, anti-Castro Cuban exiles attempted to overthrow the Castro regime here in the Battle of the Bay of Pigs. Visit the Museum. The Bay of Pigs Invasion, known in Latin America as La Batalla de Girón, was an unsuccessful military invasion of Cuba by the paramilitary group Brigade 2506 in April 1961. A counter-revolutionary militia trained and funded by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, Brigade 2506 fronted the armed wing of the Democratic Revolutionary Front (DRF) and intended to overthrow the revolutionary leftist government of President Osvaldo Dorticós Torrado. Launched from Guatemala, the invading force was defeated within three days by the Cuban armed forces under the command of Prime Minister Fidel Castro. Fourteen hundred paramilitaries, divided into five infantry battalions and one paratrooper battalion set out from Guatemala to Cuba by boat on April 13. On April 15, eight CIA-supplied B-26 bombers attacked Cuban air fields before returning to the U.S., and on the night of April 16, the main invasion landed at Playa Girón beach in the Bay of Pigs. A local revolutionary militia was initially overwhelmed but rallied under Captain José Ramón Fernández. Later Fidel Castro took personal control of the operation. On April 20, the invaders finally surrendered, with the majority of troops being publicly interrogated and then sent back to the U.S. The failed invasion strengthened the position of Castro's administration, which proceeded to openly proclaim their intention to adopt socialism and strengthen ties with the Soviet Union, leading to the events of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. The invasion was a major embarrassment for U.S. foreign policy, with Kennedy ordering a number of internal investigations. Across much of Latin America, it was celebrated as evidence of the fallibility of U.S. imperialism. Drive 1 hour to the city of Cienfuegos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city was founded in 1819 as the Colony Fernandina de Jagua. The first inhabitants came not only from Spain, but also from a number of French colonies, as well as Bordeaux, Louisiana, Philadelphia and Guárico. Visit the city’s foundation, José Martí Park, where the most representative buildings include the Government Palace (City Hall), San Lorenzo School, the Bishopric, Ferrer Palace, the Terry Theater, Cathedral de la Purisma Concepción, the former Lyceum building and some residential buildings. Lunch will be at the Villa Lagarto Paladar. After lunch, visit the Palacio Del Valle restaurant, known for its synthesis of architectural styles. Then drive along the Paseo del Prado promenade, one of the longest in Cuba. Continue to Trinidad for overnight.

THURSDAY, JUNE 07 – TRINIDAD (B,L) Spend the morning on a walking tour of Trinidad, a living-museum of Spanish colonialism. The whole city, with its fine palaces, cobbled streets and red-tiled roofs, is a national monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Trinidad’s prosperity rested on the sugar industry. The city was a cultural center with theaters, schools of language, music, dance and a wide variety of artisans, including gold and silversmiths. Lavish public and private buildings filled the city. During the second half of the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution and increased sugar beet production in Europe led to the decline of Trinidad’s slavery-based economy. Construction ceased and the city remained frozen in time. Much of the architecture is Neoclassical and Baroque, with a Moorish flavor reflecting the town’s heritage of conquistadors. Visit the Plaza Mayor in the center of town. Right on the plaza, the Iglesia Parroquial de la Santisima Trinidad is the largest church in Cuba. This is a place to leave donations. The adventurous are invited to climb up to the Antiguo Convento de San Francisco de Asis. The tower and church are all that remain of the original convent. Lunch is at one of Trinidad’s best paladars, Sol Ananda. After lunch, drive to visit the Valle de los Ingenios, or Valley of the Sugar Mills, a series of three interconnected valleys about 7.5 miles outside of Trinidad. The three valleys, San Luis, Santa Rosa and Meyer, were a center for sugar production from the late 18th century until the late 19th century. At the peak of the industry in Cuba there were over fifty sugar cane mills in operation in the three valleys, with over 30,000 slaves working in the mills and plantations that surrounded them. Sugar production was an important industry for Cuba from the earliest settlement by the Spanish, who introduced sugar cane to the island in 1512, and trade in the commodity enriched Trinidad and the surrounding areas. The island became the world's foremost producer of sugar during the late 18th and 19th centuries, when sugar production was the main industry. In 1988, Valle de los Ingenios and neighboring Trinidad were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Although most of the sugar mills are in ruins, intact structures endure at some sites. Visit the plantation of Manaca Iznaga, where the owner's house, a tower and some barracones (the original slave quarters) still stand. Although the barracones are now used as housing, they are in poor repair. The owner’s house has been converted into a restaurant. Dinner tonight is on your own. After dinner, we suggest you enjoy one of these famous music venues: - La Casa De La Musica de Trinidad - where locals and foreigners gather after dark to listen to Cuban music. When it gets “hot” the outdoor arena fills with people dancing to the irresistible beat, an unforgettable experience for any visitor! - La Cancháchara - famous for its eponymous house cocktail made from rum, honey, lemon and water. Local musicians regularly drop by for off-the-cuff jam sessions and it’s not unusual for the Cancháchara-inebriated crowd to break into spontaneous dancing.

FRIDAY, JUNE 08 – HAVANA (B,L) Drive about 3 hours to the city of Santa Clara to visit the Ernesto (Che) Guevara Mausoleum. The Argentinean Che Guevara was one of the commanders who fought with Fidel Castro in the war against the dictatorship of Batista in the 1950s. He died in Bolivia in 1967, while leading that country’s revolution. His remains were recovered in 1998 and buried in this memorial in Santa Clara Revolution Square. Visit the Armored Train Battle Monument, the site where guerrilla forces commanded by Che Guevara defeated reinforcements sent in an armored train by Batista's army in 1958. The monument site includes original armored boxcars with displays of photos, armaments and artifacts inside, and a bulldozer used by the rebels to derail the train. Lunch will be at Finca Ta Paladar, delicious food in a countryside ambience. Then, drive to Havana for overnight.

Stay in a Classic Sea View Room.

Our hotel, MELIA HABANA, is located in Miramar, one of Havana’s best locations, with magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean, 10 minutes from the city’s historical sites. All 342 rooms and 120 suites have a terrace, air-conditioning, safe deposit box, minibar, and satellite TV. Facilities and services include a business center, outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, an executive floor, 4 restaurants, a cafeteria, snack bar, 4 bars and lounges, solarium, beauty parlor, shops, sauna, massage, gym, and 24-hour room service. www.solmelia.com/hotels/cuba/havana/melia-habana Dinner tonight is on your own.

SATURDAY, JUNE 09 - HAVANA (B,L,D) Take a walking tour around the historical center of Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit the Plaza Vieja and its surrounding art galleries. Walk on to Plaza de San Francisco de Asis and the 16th-century Convento de San Francisco de Asis. This is one of the finest buildings from the colonial period. The basilica and the monastery of San Francisco de Asis (Saint Francis of Assisi) were built in Havana at the end of sixteenth century (1580–91) as the home of the Franciscan community, and were altered in the Baroque style in 1730. It is now used for concerts. Visit the gallery on Plaza de Armas, featuring some of Cuba’s most prominent artists, including Fabelo, Pedro Angel Martinez, Zaida del Rio, Pedro Pablo Oliva, Rancaño and more. Have lunch in Old Havana. Learn about Cuban cigars at Palacio de la Artesania. Observe the traditional rolling technique, and see a wide variety of premium Habanos. Tasting of cigars, along with rum or espresso is available. Walk to the Plaza de la Cathedral, where the most prominent building is the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception, seat of the Cardinal Archbishop of Havana. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Christopher (San Cristóbal) and is also known as Cathedral of Saint Christopher. The construction of the cathedral was started by Jesuits in 1748 on the site of an earlier church and finished by Havana City in 1777. The cathedral is set in the former Plaza de La Ciénaga or Swamp Plaza. The Cathedral is said to be the only example of a Baroque facade that was designed with asymmetrical features - one of the towers is wider than the other. This particular feature was conceived in order to allow the water that accumulated on the plaza to freely flow. Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier famously described the cathedral as "music set in stone." Visit the Experimental Graphic Workshop (El Taller) at Cathedral Square, where we will be welcomed by artists such as Julio Cesar Pena and Yamilis Brito. El Taller is more than Havana’s printmaking workshop. It is a school and most of all, an artistic institution that preserves and develops the sophisticated art of print making. Drive to the Callejón de Hammel (Hammel’s Alley), a community project promoting art and music. Meet with Salvador Gonzales, his assistant Elias and his team. Stop for pictures outside El Capitolio Nacional (Capitol building). Built in 1929 as the Senate and House of Representatives, the colossal building is recognizable by its dome, which dominates the city's skyline. Inside stands the third largest indoor statue in the world, La Estatua de la República. End the Old Havana visit at the outdoor handicraft market.

Page 8: CUBA DELIGHT: Art, Culture, History & Emotion

Drive through the once fashionable residential area of Miramar, which retains its pre-revolution air of exclusivity. The beautiful houses are now used for embassies, commercial offices, and tourist development. Drive on through Revolution Square, the administrative and political center of Cuba. Evening: visit, inspect and dine at one of Havana’s 5-star hotels.

SUNDAY, JUNE 10 – HAVANA (B,L) After an early breakfast, set out for a 2.5-hour drive to Pinar Del Rio, Cuba’s western-most province and primary tobacco growing region. Pass through the beautiful countryside of the Guaniguanico mountain range, agricultural lands, and pine forests. Visit the Hector Luis tobacco farm. Known as Habano-Man, Hector Luis was the youngest man in the world to receive the Habano award in 2008 and in 2009.

Page 9: CUBA DELIGHT: Art, Culture, History & Emotion

Next, visit the Viñales Valley, with some of the most spectacular scenery in Cuba. Conical limestone hills rise above the fertile valley floor, where small, privately-owned farms dot the landscape. Centuries of erosion has created many underground rivers and caves. Continue for a unique lunch at El Paraiso Paladar, a slice of paradise in the Valley of Silence. It’s part organic farm or finca and part family-run restaurant owned by Wilfredo and his daughters. When you enter the gates of the farm you’re greeted by a couple of dogs and a wafting aroma of pork roasting at the bottom of the hill. Wilfredo’s organic crops are planted in neat beds that lead out to one of the most dramatic panoramas in Viñales. It is hard to believe that just a few years ago there was nothing growing on this land except a thorny weed called el marabú. But without any pesticides, Wilfredo managed to plant fruit and vegetable crops that are now thriving and are enough to feed his family. Lunch is served family-style on the wrap-around porch of the farm house. Wilfredo’s “anti-stress cocktails” are quite legendary in these parts and are the first thing to be served. They’re an herbal concoction of yerba buena, mint, basil and anise with some coconut milk and Cuban rum to taste. We’ll end the day with a tour of the Guayabita del Pinar Rum factory.

Page 10: CUBA DELIGHT: Art, Culture, History & Emotion

Return to Havana for overnight. Dinner tonight is on your own; ask your Ya’lla Tours guide to recommend a paladar.

MONDAY, JUNE 11 – HAVANA (B,L,D) Start the day at Guarderia Padre Usera, a day care center for children ages 2 to 5, mostly of single mothers, many teenagers. The center is open 7:00am to 4:30pm, allowing the mothers to work to support their families. The center is run by the office of the Cardinal of Havana but has complete pedagogic autonomy and aims to prepare the children for a healthy and productive life. We will meet the director Sister Theresa, as well as some of the teachers and kids. This will be a perfect place to leave some of the donations you have brought for children. Visit the Guanabacoa School of Music (Conservatorio Guillermo Tomás), located just outside Havana in Guanabacoa. Gifted students enter the school at an early age and study academic and musical subjects for the next 10 years. There are 500 students ranging in age from 8 to 19 and 90 professors. Many of the students who graduate every year go on to join the best symphony, chamber and popular orchestras or become music professors. Continue to the Centro Hebreo Sephardi de Cuba. Meet with Dr. Levy, the head of the community, and hear about the congregation, the challenges they face and the programs they offer, and visit their Holocaust Remembrance Hall.

Page 11: CUBA DELIGHT: Art, Culture, History & Emotion

For Lunch, we will visit and inspect another 5-star hotel in Havana. Visit the Havana Club Museum of Rum and journey back to the origins of Cuba’s most famous beverage. From freshly cut stalks of sugar cane to a refurbished distillery and ageing cellars, the museum offers a real-time experience of the rum-making process, as well as a taste of true Cuban culture. At the end of the visit you will have a tasting of the famous Cuban rum. Next, meet with a self-taught Cuban artist who opens his home to teach neighborhood children the art of papier mâché. Continue for a walk through the Christopher Columbus Cemetery, with the lavish tombs of wealthy Cubans from before the revolution. Back at the hotel, meet with Dr. Carlos Alzugaray Treto from CESEU (Centro de Estudios sobre Estados Unidos) for an overview of US-Cuban relations. Dr. Alzugaray is a former Cuban diplomat who serves today as the Coordinator of International Strategic Studies. Dinner will be at La Habanera Paladar, located in a beautiful house in Miramar. Transfers to the restaurant will be done in vintage cars. After dinner, take in a show from VIP seating at the famous Tropicana nightclub. Return to your hotel for overnight. TUESDAY, JUNE 12 – HAVANA (B,L) Visit Convento de Belen, a renowned community center that serves Havana’s poorest neighborhoods, with special focus on the elderly and disabled children. You will have the opportunity to make contributions here. Continue to the nearby Finca Vigia, Ernest Hemingway’s home in Cuba for two decades. He bought the house in 1939 and it was opened as a museum in 1964. It contains more than 22,000 original items, including records, books, paintings, personal documents, photographs, and hunting weapons. Peering inside the house through large windows and strolling around the peaceful grounds, visitors get a good feel for the daily life of the great writer. Visit Cojimar, the fishing village which inspired Ernest Hemingway’s novel The Old Man and the Sea (the 1954 Nobel Prize winner). Have lunch at Ajiaco Paladar in Cojimar. Return to Havana and visit the 18th-century fortress San Carlos de la Cabaña at the entrance of Havana Bay. When the fortress was built, the king of Spain requested a spyglass and exclaimed: "The Cabaña, such a valuable work, should be spotted from

Page 12: CUBA DELIGHT: Art, Culture, History & Emotion

Madrid!" The fortress was used as a military base and a prison for more than two hundred years and Che Guevara made it his headquarters for some months during the Cuban revolution. Continue the Proyecto Muraleando. This community-oriented project began in 2003 under the direction of Manuel Diaz Baldrich and grew into an art collective, painting the neighborhood and providing workshops in all forms of art, including ceramics, theater, dance & music. Each year in April, they hold a two-week, international wall painting symposium. Visit the art gallery Villa Manuela of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), founded in 2004 as a display space for contemporary art. The gallery is located in the 1920s building VILLA MANUELA, which was modified to create a public, multifunctional structure, with an exhibition space, an assembly plant, a supply store and a bookstore. End the day at Club Chevere for a private salsa lesson. Evening: visit, inspect and dine at a 4-star hotel in Havana. Return to the hotel for overnight. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13 - HAVANA (B,L,D) At 8:30am, we will begin our full-day seminar with Ronen Paldi, President of Ya’lla Tours USA: LEGAL TRAVEL TO CUBA: What is allowed and what is not, Challenges and Opportunities A lite lunch will be served.
