Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering
Government-Funded Programme
Architecture is a profession which is concerned with the design of our built environment – principally buildingsof various kinds. Building design involves the creative arrangement of three-dimensional form and spacewhich can be constructed to provide a fitting and comfortable environment for various human activities andexperiences. It is concerned with the design of both the internal spaces and the external appearance ofbuildings.
To do this would require knowledge and skills in many areas, such as how space and form can be arrangedand organised to accommodate human activities, how materials and components can be assembled into anenclosure which is stable and safe for human occupation, and how the above can be done in a way that theoverall effect is delightful and attractive. In other words, building design requires an understanding of people, technology and beauty, and it requires creativity and imagination so that the above can be integrated in anoriginal and innovative manner.

Government-Funded ProgrammeAssociate of Science in
Architectural Studies
The principal aim of the Associate of Science in Architectural Studies programme isto provide a sound education and training for students to become technicallycompetent personnel in the architectural profession, who possess:
knowledge and practical skills in the areas of design, communication, environmental science, society and culture, building technology andprofessional practice
+intellectual abilities and transferable skills to communicate effectively, analyse information critically, and solve problems independently
Our graduates are expected to have a broad-based academic foundation andpractical skills in architectural studies to enter into an international workplace orcontinuing education in local and overseas universities.
Combines innovative Problem-Based Learning techniques with traditional studio project-based architecturallearning to encourage knowledge discovery and design innovation in students
Consists of a series of problem / project studios where students acquire knowledge and skills through workingon real-life problems in small groups of 5-6 students, and creative building projects individually
Allows students to take an active role in their education and extends learning to beyond the classroom
Enriches students’ learning experience and encourages whole person development through a variety ofco-curricular + extra-curricular activities, such as overseas study tours, technical visits, exchangeprogrammes, summer internship, community work, and many more
