Goodbye Impromptu Table, Hello “The Open Table”!by Stan Friedland

The Impromptu Table is undergoing a “name-lift” and will be known henceforth as “The Open Table.” But, before we say goodbye to this familiar name, let’s take one more look at this outstanding program. In 2014, The Impromptu Table (IT) was originated by Mary Ann Van Kampen, when she recognized that many Cedars’ Members, living alone, were also eating alone, a problem that needed a solution. Ably assisted by her good friend, Don Rorke, Mary Ann came up with the brilliant idea of having a table that Members simply could sign up for to have a nice dinner with others, not only for a delicious meal, but also for an enjoyable social experience. Thus, The Impromptu Table was born! Every night of the week, a special table, has been set up in the Magnolia Room for those who had signed up for it. The make-up of the table always has been as varied and rich as the general membership of The Cedars itself. Members hail from all over. Our education, careers and talents are always impressive. Add to this mix the popular programs and activities here at The Cedars and the conversation at the table rarely slows down.

When Don Rorke sadly passed away in December of 2016, Mary Ann kept it going on her own. Couples were invited to The Table and it continued to meet a definite need of Members. When Mary Ann couldn’t be there, Members such as Mavis and Herb Rochen, Vicki and Rich Hendel, Sandy Wetmore, and Bob Rechholtz filled in admirably. Sandy, new to The Cedars when she first used The Table, had an interesting observation about it. “As a new Cedars’ resident, I found that Mary Ann and the IT represented the very best of “Southern hospitality.” It is a great way to meet your neighbors and get better acquainted with the interesting people and activities that make up our exceptional community.”

Too many of our newer Members do not know enough about The Table to use it to meet their needs. So, it is a good time to publicize it again and to give it a “Name-lift!” Other improvements to it will be in place shortly. But, it’s here for YOU to use now! Say hello to “The Open Table”! We invite all Members of The Cedars, new and old, to dine at it in the near future and we guarantee you an enjoyable experience. A loose-leaf book is on the coffee table in the Clubhouse for you to sign up for an evening when you would be alone. Both singles and couples are welcome and our Welcome Light is lit just for you! Popcorn and a Movie —Green BookThursday, April 4, 3pm Ballroom

When Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), a bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), a world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on “The Green Book” to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger-as well as unexpected humanity and humor-they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime. 91st Academy award winner for best picture.

A Seat at the Table: Congresswomen’s Perspectives on Why Their Presence Matters

with Kelly DittmarMonday, April 1, 2pm Ballroom

Kelly Dittmar is an assistant professor of Political Science at

Rutgers-Camden and Scholar at the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University. Dittmar is the author of A Seat at the Table: Congresswomen’s Perspectives on Why Their Presence Matters, which draws upon interviews with more than 80 congresswomen to examine what motivates women’s legislative priorities and behavior, detail the ways in which women experience service within a male-dominated institution, and highlight why it matters that women sit in the nation’s federal legislative chambers. As we observe a new Congress with a record number of women serving, A Seat at the Table offers insights into the symbolic and substantive effects of diverse representation. Books will be available for purchase.

The Paris PhotoBook review and signing with Jane S. GabinFriday, April 12, 3pm Ballroom

The Paris Photo conveys the story of American soldier Ben Gordon and his relationship with a young mother and her son just after the Liberation of Paris in August, 1944. Despite the strength of this relationship during the war, Ben’s return to America separates them. Decades later, Ben’s daughter stitches the relationship back together when she discovers a photograph of her late father with an unknown woman

and boy. The Paris Photo lifts characters out of the pages of a history book, richly depicting the human emotion that pervades our memories. Dr. Jane S. Gabin holds a Ph.D. in English Literature from

the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and works as an educational counselor and lecturer. Most recently, she has taught at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Duke University. Books will be available for purchase.

But the residents’ response may have even more disturbing implications for the future. Writer/director Peter Haneke says The White Ribbon “is about the roots of evil.” Winner of the Palme d’Or

Voices of Mississippiwith William FerrisMonday, April 22, 3pm Ballroom

On February 10, 2019, Voices of Mississippi: Artists and Musicians Documented by William Ferris won the Grammy

William Ferris was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1942. Growing up on a working farm, Ferris began at a young age documenting the artwork, music, and lives of the people on the farm and in his local community. The archive of recordings that he created and the documentary films that he had a hand in producing have served as powerful tools in institutions of higher learning for decades. Books will be available for purchase.

Stories with Jane HauserTuesday, April 23, 11am Ballroom

Do you like to listen to a good story? In this hour, Jane will make her real life experiences come to life. The stories range from a yard sale to a dude ranch and from football (the way it was) to her award-winning story about the Ku Klux Klan. So be forewarned, long-time Members,

you may have heard some (but not all) of these before. Jane’s sister Mary Crabill has never heard her tell stories so she had to include a couple of oldies but goodies. Included in the program will be a few performance poems, “If you don’t know the trees you may be lost in the forest, but if you don’t know the stories you may be lost in life” Anon. (Siberian Elder)
