• The Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) is an organization of member states and territories representing public health epidemiologists. CSTE works to establish more effective relationships among state and other health agencies.

Fellowship Goals

Mission: To meet the nation’s need for applied epi workforce capacity at the state/local level through a national two year training program

Core Concepts

1. Create and train a core group of public health epidemiologists

2. Provide service to the sponsoring agency

3. Strengthen capacity in applied epidemiology

Background

• Using a mentorship model and competency-based approach model similar to the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS), fellows receive rigorous training and develop applied epidemiologic skills during a high quality on-the-job training experience in order to secure a long-term career at the local/state level

• Supported by funding from CDC and SAMHSA

• Marketing and recruiting supported by ASPPH and other partners

Competency-Based Program

Epidemiologic methods o Evaluate a surveillance system

o Design an epidemiologic study

Compensation and Benefits

• Stipend

o $41,000 for master’s level

o $56,000 for doctoral level

• Insurance: up to $320/month for insurance premium

• Professional development: $970 to spend on conferences or training programs

• Relocation: up to $1000

Fellowship History

• 301 Fellows have entered the program since its inception in 2003

• Class XIII- 35 new fellows

• Class XII- 30 fellows in their 2nd year

• 230 Fellows have graduated from the program to date

• Based upon the data from CSTE’s 2013 survey of program alumni (N=145)

• 58% reported working at a STLT or federal public health agency

• 13% in academia

• 13% in graduate programs

• 16% in other settings

Fellow Eligibility

• An MPH, MSPH, MS, or equivalent degree or an advanced degree in a health-related field

• Minimum of 4 graduate-level epidemiology courses and 1 graduate-level biostatistics course

• Desire to pursue a long-term career in epidemiology at the state or local level

• Demonstrated analytic skills

• United States citizenship

STRENGTHENING HEALTH SYSTEMS

THROUGH INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION

A collaboration between Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,

Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists, and National

Association of County and City Health Officials.

Project SHINE Fellowships Applied Public Health Informatics Fellowship (APHIF)

Trains recent graduates in the expanding field of applied public health informatics.

Health Systems Integration Program (HSIP)

Places public health professionals at state, tribal, local, and territorial (STLT) health departments to engage the community to facilitate the integration of public health and clinical health systems.

Informatics-Training in Place Program (I-TIPP)

Is an innovative-approach to bring relevant on-the-job training to appropriate level STLT staff to address informatics capacity needs of their health departments through competency-based training and development of a multi-disciplinary, collaborative learning environment.

APPLIED PUBLIC HEALTH INFORMATICS

FELLOWSHIP

Mission: APHIF is a national fellowship-training program that aims to support the nation’s increasing and urgent need for applied public health informatics workforce capacity in state and local health departments

• Provide an accelerated competency-based training experience

• Strengthen capacity in applied public health informatics across public health institutions

• Provide service to the sponsoring agency

• Create and train a core group of public health workers

PROGRAM FELLOWSHIP

Mission: HSIP places public health professionals at state, tribal, local, and territorial health departments. The recent push for improved outcomes in population health has called for these public health and primary care sectors to collaborate more effectively.

Core Concepts

• Community epidemiologic surveillance to support community health needs assessments,

• The public health interface and use of electronic health records, and

• Lessons learned from successful public health and primary care professional partnerships.

HSIP Eligibility

• Willing to commit to the full-time one year program

• Desire to pursue a long-term career in public health at the state or local level

• US citizenship or Permanent Residency

• 2 years of public health experience and a doctoral degree

OR

• 4 years of public health experience and a masters degree

AND

HSIP Benefits

• Stipend

– Board Certified Clinician: $85,000

– All other fellows: $75,000

• Insurance: up to $320/month for insurance

premium
