Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the concept whereby companies act to balance their own economic growth with the sustainable social and environmental development of their areas of operation.
In the Mauritian context…The Government of Mauritius has established a policy with the overall objective of mandating registered companies to pay 2% of their book profit towards programmes that contribute to the social and environmental development of the country.

The Eradication of Absolute Poverty
Programme has been set up with the
mandate of addressing the problem of
absolute poverty (household income less
than Rs 5,000 per month) affecting the lives
of around 7000 households (7157 families in
229 pockets of poverty, regrouped in 69
clusters with around 100 families per
cluster). The approach being used is the
Integrated Community Development
approach with the participation of the
private sector and other stakeholders.
The problems of the absolute poor are quite similar in most of the cases and consequently integrated projects for pockets of poverty have the following generic areas of intervention:
•Housing

•Training and Employment(Adult Literacy)
•Health
•Training in Life skills
•Treatment and rehabilitation of substance abusers
•Public infrastructure(roads, drains, footbridges.
footpaths, playgrounds)
•Public Utilities(Drinking water, electricity, septic

EDUCATION
As a key role player in the country's economy, The MCB Ltd is committed to the future generation. MCB support many education and life skills programs as they believe that by contributing in the educational sector, they will help in the development of the community for a better future.
Education initiative supported by the MCB Ltd: Created in 1999, this wide ranging education scheme covers teachers and parents training programmes, improvement to the physical structure of the teaching environment and the supply of basic school materials in specially deprived areas.

School materials have been provided where necessary and infrastructure works have been carried out in the schools around the country. Teachers have been trained and their skills upgraded during numerous awareness programs. These have been organised with the help of other specialised organisations such as ICR & MPRB.

MCB Rodrigues Scholarship scheme
An annual scholarship awarded to a Rodrigues student and covering all educational and living expenses, at the University of Mauritius for a period not exceeding 4 years. This scheme has been set up since August 2000.

Orphanage and many vulnerable children is among main matter of concern in Mauritius. To help in sorting out and reducing these problems, MCB came up with solutions such as:
Bridging the gap between the school and parents to raise awareness on importance of education for the social and economic progress of their children
Ensuring the proper foundation for learning and development of underprivileged pre-primary school children by Centre de L'amitié.
Association des Malades et Handicapés de L'Est - Empowerment of physically & mentally handicapped children through physiotherapy sessions
Educational Support to 12 pre-primary and 8 primary school children of teenage mothers
Setting up of specialised education programme for children suffering from mental deficiencies.
