Kickstarting CSP as India’s perfect energy solution CSP has made tremendous progress since the announcement of the Jawaharlal nehru national Solar Mission (JnnSM) in 2010 and should not be underestimated in the country’s future energy mix.

with 7 monumental projects underway, CSP will be absolutely vital as the Government tackles the energy crisis that literally plunged India into darkness in July 2012.

2012 was also a year where foundations were built for the Indian CSP industry – international companies like areva, novatec Solar and SeneR made major moves into the market, while investment from the likes of the asian Development Bank ($103 million) and the US ex-Im Bank ($80 million) boosted CSP expansion. These encouraging signs indicate that CSP has not been beaten by its Pv rivals and 2013 promises new opportunities.

The first phase of the JnnSM aimed for 1Gw of grid-connected solar energy by 2013, split 50-50 between Pv and CSP. with the winning bids now drawing ever closer to completion, very soon these plants will be providing investors and interested parties the operational and performance data that the industry needs.

There are also two other factors that long-term will give CSP the edge in the Indian energy market. The first being development of local manufacturing facilities and manpower, which drive down cost and improve efficiency. The second is innovation in storage and hybridisation solutions that will boost dispatchability.

Realizing the CSP opportunity in Indiahowever, there are major obstacles that the industry is wrestling with at present. The relatively simple process of installing Pv projects (together with rock-bottom module prices) saw the Pv industry soar ahead of CSP in India during Phase I. Meanwhile, CSP developers fought to secure the funds, materials and manpower they needed to realize the projects.

Of course, Pv competition is not the only obstacle that needs to be overcome for CSP to gain a bigger market share in India. with only one major installed CSP plant, investors simply do not have access to the data they require to throw their support and funding behind the technology. In addition to this confusion over the accuracy of solar irradiation data, frustration over land permitting red-tape and uncertainty surrounding which CSP technology is the most appropriate

for India are hindering the industry’s development.

But the biggest factor now is cost – an issue which is certainly not limited to the Indian CSP market. The global economic crisis, combined with a relatively small pool of local CSP manufacturers, has made cost reduction the number one priority for Indian developers as they fight to make their technology viable.

however, global experience has shown that CSP markets are not built in a day - and creating the infrastructure for an industry from scratch takes time. International markets like Spain (1330Mw installed) and the USa (518Mw installed) were developed over years and India is well placed to learn from their successes and avoid their mistakes.

It is estimated that 11Gw of CSP will be installed worldwide by 2017–with the right approach, India will be make a substantial contribution to that figure.

In 2013 India needs successfully executed projects to prove to investors that the technology works – and the 7 winners of the Phase I projects are now battling to make the numbers add up and meet aggressively negotiated tariff prices.
