FROM THE BOARD CHAIRDear Friends,

Good news! Donations have increased significantly, subscriptions are up, expenses have been controlled, and our orchestra continues to amaze with its artistic quality. If CSO donors continue to increase their support, Chattanooga will continue to have a a fine symphony orchestra. Your CSO Board is cautiously optimistic.

The average percentage of earned revenue for American symphony orchestras is 40% of operating expenses. We hit that number dead on in FY2014, and are already seeing increased subscriptions for the coming season. Knowing this, our existence will always depend on donors. In the last two years, the number of donors to the CSO has increased by 11%, our contributed funds have increased 23%, and the number of our Leadership Donors has increased by 46%. This is the only revenue in which we can expect enough of an increase to put us on stable financial footing. So please stay with us, and, if possible, increase your gift a bit. Encourage others to join you in supporting the CSO. You can help us achieve a balanced budget in FY2015. With enough new and increased gifts, we’ll be in the black by next year.

We have been spending unrestricted reserves to stay alive for the last three years, something we did not want to do. We are pleased to report that because of a good fortune in the markets and a generous gift with which a donor endowed a significant annual gift, our endowment has grown, though not enough to replace the need for more annual giving.

Please read this entire report. We are proud of our CSO musicians and staff, our Youth Orchestras, our Ensembles in the Schools program, our Community Engagement initiatives, and more. Join me in thanking the many volunteers listed on pages 18-19 that make so many of these programs run smoothly. The CSO is truly a community effort and a community treasure.

With thanks,

Spencer McCallie

Dear Friends, What a thrilling season we had in 2013/14. As my third season as Music Director came to an end, I reflected on the accomplishments that my colleagues (musicians, staff and board) achieved. The most memorable concert of the season, by far, was our final Masterworks concert of the season with The Rite of Spring. I believe that we have reached a new level of artistry.

We had two major leadership changes in the orchestra. Holly Mulcahy joined the CSO as the Concertmaster. Holly is doing an outstanding job leading the orchestra and also being an ambassador of CSO and the arts in the Chattanooga community. Kristen Holritz joined the CSO as the Principal Flute, succeeding Janet Hale who performed with CSO for 40 years.

We were joined by enormous talent on stage with guest soloists last season. Geoffrey Duce, who got stranded at the Atlanta Airport for 48 hours, gave an exciting "open rehearsal" of Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1. Jennifer Frautschi gave a breathtaking performance of the Mendelssohn Concerto. We also welcomed guest conductor Peter Bay, who lead the CSO masterfully, and collaborated with Gloria Chien and the String Theory soloists on Beethoven's Triple Concerto. We also collaborated with the city's leader, Mayor Andy Berke, who gave a powerful narration on Copland's Lincoln Portrait.

I continue to learn more about this community and this orchestra every day. I am honored to be leading such a wonderful group of dedicated and talented musicians, and enjoy meeting and speaking with so many of you at concerts and out in the community. I hope you’ll continue to support the CSO with your time, attendance and financial contributions so that we can keep this stellar organization strong and vital for years to come. Sincerely,

Kayoko Dan

Dear Friends,

The 2013/14 season has to be one of the most exciting in our 80-plus year history. Opening with the The Planets got us off to a great start, and our final Barnett & Company Masterworks concert, The Rite of Spring, has to be a true milestone for the CSO. Both concerts will be long remembered as spectacular performances.

The season also brought changes to the musician line-up. After a year-long search, we were thrilled to welcome Holly Mulcahy as the first new CSO concertmaster in 33 years. New Principal Flutist Kristen Holritz and her violinist husband Josh joined our line-up along with several young musicians. These new, young musicians are bringing a vitality and energy to the stage which is contagious.

Along with young musicians, we’re also welcoming young administrative staff members. I’m so thrilled that Sarah Marczynski and Tiffany Feltner have joined us. To have so many musicians and staff members in their 20s join the CSO gives me great hope for the future of classical music and orchestras. Yes, there are indeed young people who want to make this music and young people who want to make sure there are audiences and opportunities for them to do so.

We had a much better year financially than the previous season, but we still have our challenges. We aren’t out of the tunnel yet, but we can see the light at the end of it, and no, it isn’t an oncoming train. For the first time in our history, we topped $500,000 in annual gifts, a true testament to this community’s desire to see the CSO not only survive but thrive. Thanks to our patrons and donors, we have a wonderful future ahead.

Sincerely,

Molly K. Sasse

MASTERCLASSESDuring the 2013/14 season, the CSO’s guest artists and musicians visited local schools and universities to present masterclasses and guest lectures. Nine masterclasses were presented throughout the season at Center for Creative Arts, Lee University, The McCallie School, and the Tivoli Theatre with nearly 400 students and adults attending. Participating musicians included CSO’s concertmaster Holly Mulcahy, guest artists Jennifer Frautschi, Wesley Baldwin, and more.

PLAYALONG WITH THE CSOOn Mother’s Day, almost 50 community musicians performed alongside CSO musicians in a free concert event at the Chattanooga Market. Community musicians were able to sign up in advance to perform four music selections with the CSO. Three available time slots allowed for several musicians to participate. Attendees of the Market were able to get a free concert, many of whom camped out in front of the tent in chairs. This second annual event was created to allow an interactive experience for amateur musicians to know what it’s like to play with a professional orchestra.

POPS & RECThe CSO Wind Quintet presented a performance at Eastdale Recreation Center on May 22, 2014. The Wind Quintet, composed of principal players from the Woodwind and Brass sections, performed a variety of pieces, from classical standards to modern favorites, showcasing their instruments. This performance was the first of its kind, formed out of a partnership between the CSO and the Foxdale Heights Neighborhood Association. It is the first time in several years that the CSO has performed at the Eastdale Recreation Center and the first time in several seasons that the CSO has partnered with a neighborhood association to present a concert.

GIRLS OF NOTEThe CSO partnered with the Girl Scouts of the Southern Appalachians to present “Girls of Note” on April 5, 2014. This afternoon workshop was attended by over 50 Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts and their chaperones. Participants learned about notable female composers, instrument families and how individual instruments make sounds, basic conducting patterns, and attended a live performance of the CSO.

YOUNG PEOPLE’S CONCERTSThe Young People’s Concerts, presented on February 6 and 7, 2014 at the Tivoli Theatre, were well received by teachers and students. The program, Symphonic Voyagers: The Orchestra in Orbit and Beyond!, featured several of the musical selections from NASA’s golden disc, now traveling beyond the solar system in the Voyager space probe. Carey Shinbaum, who created the concept and script, made an appearance as a space alien who had encountered the golden disc and wanted to learn more about music on earth. Also included was a performance of the Wieniawski Violin Concerto No. 2 (3rd movement) by Bethany Thornton, winner of the CSOYO Concerto Competition.

Many school groups were able to attend thanks to ArtsBuild’s Imagine! program, enabling all 3rd grade students in Hamilton County schools to attend without ticket and transportation costs.

The total attendance for the three performances at the Tivoli Theatre was the largest recorded attendance for a YPC program in that venue since at least 2001. This was due in large part to the Imagine! program. 41 different schools from five different counties in Tennessee and Georgia, as well as various home school groups, were represented.

“I loved the presentation of classical music with a comedic twist. It was engaging and educational for all ages.” Red Bank Elementary School

ENSEMBLES IN SCHOOLSThe CSO core musicians (CSO Wind Quintet and CSO String Quintet) performed this season for approximately 23,000 students in 59 schools. Approximately 30% were minority students and 8% were students with disabilities. The teachers and administrators seemed to be pleased with the content and length of the programs, as well as the interaction between players and students. The music teachers, in particular, appreciated the reinforcement of their instruction about the orchestral instruments, a variety of musical concepts, and familiar musical selections.

“The program was perfect for our school. Learning about the instruments and hearing their individual sounds fit perfectly into the school’s objectives. The students and staff loved the program.” Gilbert Elementary School

CSO STRING PROGRAMSThe CSO provided a string teacher for Alpine Crest Elementary School for the ninth year (CSO Strings in Schools). David Creel, CSO violinist, taught weekly violin classes, assisted by Judy Brittingham, Music Teacher at Alpine Crest Elementary School. The CSO also provided a string teacher for Big Ridge Elementary School, where Priscilla Estrada has taught a weekly class for the second year. In total, 57 students participate in these programs.

YOUTH ORCHESTRASDuring the 2013/14 season, the CSO Youth Orchestras program served 190 talented instrumental musicians in the Chattanooga area (representing 40 different schools), ages 8-18. There are two full orchestras and two string (training) orchestras that serve students from several counties in southeast Tennessee and northwest Georgia. The conductors, including Gary Wilkes (Symphony), Sandy Morris (Philharmonic), and Nichole Pitts (Prelude and Etude), are all veteran string educators in Hamilton County public schools.

The Youth Orchestras presented five formal concerts as well as a concert collaboration with the Chattanooga Boys Choir’s Singing Christmas Tree. A unique event this season was the joint performance with the Southern Adventist University Orchestra before the From the Top broadcast at the Tivoli Theatre on January 23.

All students are periodically coached on their music by leading CSO musicians. The more advanced Youth Orchestra musicians are also members of smaller ensembles such as the String Quartets, Woodwind Trio, and Brass Quintet, performing in the Tivoli Theatre lobby before CSO concerts and for various other community events each year. The Youth Orchestras provide a Concerto Competition in August, where the first place winner (Bethany Thornton on violin) performs a solo with the CSO, and the second place winner (Justin Smith on oboe and Chandler Custer on violin tied for second place this season) performs a solo with the CSOYO Symphony Orchestra. The CSOYO also participated at the Ronald McDonald Autumn Festival and the CSO Play-Along event at the Chattanooga Market with a “petting zoo” exhibit.

Much of the basic musical training that the students receive takes place in area public and private schools; and to some extent, private lesson studios. The schools that still maintain a string program are key to maintaining the CSO Youth Orchestras at a high level of excellence. If it were not for the string programs at HCDE schools such as Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences (the home of the CSO Youth Orchestras program), Center for Creative Arts, Hixson Middle and High Schools, Signal Mountain Middle/High School; private schools such as McCallie School, Girls Preparatory School, Baylor School; and private lesson studios such as Cadek Conservatory and the UTC String Project, it is doubtful that the Youth Orchestras program could continue to exist. The Hamilton County Public Schools and the various private schools and studios are to be commended for their continuing commitment to string education. Many students, including several from the minority community, have benefited from this program in profound and lasting ways. It is to be hoped that these opportunities will continue for young people in the Chattanooga area and that they will expand to other schools as well.

POPTOTSThe CSO continued its partnership with the Creative Discovery Museum in producing PopTots, a series that uses musical performance and instruction to help young children develop cognitive and fine motor skills by providing them the opportunity to play more than 20 rhythm instruments. Principal musicians from the CSO Wind and String Quintets performed and then invited museum guests to make an instrument and perform with them.

701 Broad StreetChattanooga, TN 37402

On May 31, 2014, the CSO presented a new fundraiser, UnCorked!, a wine and food event held outdoors at Renaissance Park. 20 different restaurants participated in the event with selections ranging from Kale Salad to Beef Tenderloins to Shrimp and Grits. Paired wine was available at most food stations and was passed throughout the crowds. 800 guests enjoyed music by CSO ensembles, the Ben Friberg Trio, and Dexter Bell and Friends. A silent auction accompanied the event with items such as a Tuscany trip, home wine-tasting event, jewelry, housewares, photo sessions, and more. Darrell and Claudia Moore were the chairs of this successful event, with considerable support from the CSO Board of Directors and Chattanooga Presents.
