ALEXIABLIESE

PRESENTED BYC WITHERS MEDIA GROUP

Alexia has been a devoted stay at home mother for the last five years. Her main priority is her children. Prior to committing herself to the wellbeing of her family, she worked in Human Resources in a logistics company. She has always been extremely active. She played all kinds of sports, track, swim, cheer and soccer for over twenty years. It was these physical activities that laid the ground work for her as a fitness competitor today. As far as her work outside of the home is concerned, Alexia has her own YouTube Channel at Lexiebfit and was placed in a national ad this last year through her photo-shoot with the very talented Casey Withers. Alexia is looking forward to her next competition season!

I hope that I can help educate people on balance; that you can be a mom, be in this industry, but not have to give your entire life to it. You can have it all. You can be and do what you want. You can create the life you wish for yourself. We are so much more powerful than we know. I hope to show people that.”

CSM: In those spans of year/s or the experi-ences, who was your inspiration to venture this kind of work or career?ALEXIA: I have had so many influential people spur me on throughout the years; some in the industry and some not. Many I have had the pleasure of meeting, such as my good friend, Sonia Querido (previously Sonia Gonzales) who was the first Ms. Bikini Olympia. She’s been a huge inspira-tion of mine. Not just because of what she’s accomplished, but because of her sweet and honest spirit. Others have been inspirational to me because they have been big support-ers of mine, such as my husband. He’s always cheering me on. Whenever I start to doubt myself he lifts me back up to push a little longer, a little harder.

CSM: When you were growing up, what was your goal/s or perhaps your dream before prior to the work your currently in?ALEXIA: As I mentioned before I was real-ly into soccer! I wanted to play for the US women’s soccer team so badly growing up. I used to have my parents and coaches film me during games and practices so I could go home and review the tapes to see where I could improve. I once got to meet my still hero Michelle Akers at a hotel in Southern California by chance and I remember barely being able to speak! One of the world’s best soccer players and I got to meet her?!!!! So cool!

CSM: How do you manage your time with your busy schedule?ALEXIA: Truthfully, every day is differ-ent with 3 kids. I plan my days out the best I can and I am an incredibly organized individual, but the most important thing I’ve come to learn is that you sometimes just have to roll with the punches. I can-not control every single detail, and I can go mad trying to. It’s okay if everything isn’t “perfect.” It’s better that we’re happy rather than perfect anyway.

CSM: How do you maintain your figure or physical physique?ALEXIA: (Laughs) Donuts!!! Well, I believe in balance. I follow flexible dieting and did throughout the last three competi-tion preps as well. I was able to reach very low levels of body fat, and looked far better than I did using traditional prep techniques. I ate ice-cream almost overnight during my preps. I eat mostly nutrient dense foods, but I still eat foods I enjoy, like burgers, cook-ies, candy etc.; all foods that if I were to cut out I would binge on. Balance has helped me create a much better physique. The other main component is a well-structured program. I lift heavy 5-6 days a week with minimum cardio. I’m a bodybuilder not a cardio bunny, (laughs)! It’s important that I give a big shout out to Raymond Querido (The Online Coach) my coach! He helped me through 3 shows this past season back to back. No small feat!

PROMINENCE OF GROWTH AND CAREER:

CSM: What motivates you and how do you maintain the drive of your work?ALEXIA: I love hard work. It’s innate. If I weren’t working hard every day at some-thing I would be a very depressed person. I truly believe that people need something to do, something to feel proud about. Putting your energy into something you can feel good about, regardless of what that may be is what drives me to keep going. I love the grind that comes from hard work. I don’t need a reward or a pat on the back. I get up and get stuff done, because I love hitting new Personal Records (PR’s) and I love proving people wrong.

CSM: What’s your greatest mistake or fail-ure and what lesson did you learn from it?ALEXIA: I don’t think there is any one mistake or failure in particular that stands out, but rather phases in my life in which I was unhappy because I was taking life way too seriously. I was far too devoted to one aspect of my life. Living with blind-ers on, and not giving enough of myself to my friends and family. These are the kinds of things that I have learned from; to take time out and give to others. To make sure that my life is not a selfish one, but one of service.

CSM: Wave your magic wand, where do you see yourself in ten years?ALEXIA: I hope that I will be doing much of what I am doing today. I really love my life!

CSM: Why do you want to work in this field or industry?ALEXIA: I hope that I can help educate people on balance; that you can be a mom, be in this industry, but not have to give your entire life to it. You can have it all. You can be and do what you want. You can create the life you wish for yourself. We are so much more powerful than we know. I hope to show people that.

CSM: Without being biased, how would your family and friends describe you?ALEXIA: Funny, sarcastic, honest, silly and loving.

CSM: Your work can be stressful at times, how do you manage those or handle such things?ALEXIA: Again, balance. If you are devoted to much of yourself to one thing you are going to grow resentful. I like to take a little time at the end of each week and evaluate how I spent my time. Who I spent my time with, and how I can better manage it in the coming week. This helps me see if I there is something lacking. Sometimes by taking a step back I’m able to see that I need to take more time for myself, or I didn’t spend the quality time I would like to with my husband or a certain family member. Balance is the key.

CSM: During your free time or when you have an enough luxury time to relax for a bit, what are the things you usually do to unwind?ALEXIA: I love the movies, dinner with friends and family, or going to the beach… some of my favorite things to do.

Page 19: CSM Women's Issue: The 3rd Anniversary Special Edition

OUTSIDE THE ZONE, OUTSIDE THE BOX:

CSM: What are food and drinks guilty plea-sure you can’t resist and why? ALEXIA: Well, I follow flexible dieting so nothing is really off limits. If i want some-thing I just find a way to make it fit into my macros.

CSM: If you can name five male figures or personalities who display masculinity in their career and great role model for the society, who would they be?ALEXIA: Jesus, My husband, (he would kill me if I didn’t list him, lol) President Barak Obama, Abraham Lincoln, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. To me being a true man is not about being some stereotypical action hero we see in today’s blockbust-ers, but rather someone who is selfless and provides endlessly for those he loves; a true role model.

CSM: If you were to name the five things or characteristics that your fan base and supporters doesn’t know about you, what would they be?ALEXIA: I love the outdoors! Hiking, snorkeling, fishing, you name it I’m game! I was a cheerleader in High school, but I only made the squad because I can dance. I was terrible at the actual cheering part, lol! I had three kids in four and a half years. I’m a California girl through and through even though I lived five years in Mississippi! I played on a nationally ranked soccer team growing up.

CSM: On top of your head, what five adjec-tives describe you best?ALEXIA: Determined, goofy, caring, lov-ing, and a coffee addict.

CSM: Who is the most influential man and woman in the world and why?ALEXIA: President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama because they have done some much to change the land-scape of the LGBT community within the US.

CSM: Let’s say a genie does exist, if you can marry someone in the world who would it be and why?ALEXIA: My husband.

CSM: You will be stuck in an island on purpose for one year, what are the top ten priority things you will bring?ALEXIA: Water! Chap Stick, Pop tarts, sunscreen, umbrella, matches, fishing pole, a hat, a cell phone and a GPS tracker.

CSM: If you have an unexplained terminal illness and you’re dying, what would be your one, last dying wish?ALEXIA: To spend the day with my family in Paris. We would eat baguettes and sip wine!

CSM: Lastly, what are your final mes-sages to your fan base and supporters that constantly follow you or at least look up to you?ALEXIA: Thank you! I’m so inspired by those that have supported me. Every kind word has fueled me. None of it has been lost on me. I am truly grateful!

Jasmine has just recently ended her service in the United States Army in order to pursue her graduate education in mental health counseling and begin a new career in the fitness industry. This is really her first venture out in the realms of fitness modeling, however, Jasmine also have a passion for training others and competing in various obstacle course marathons. She has been competing in sports since she was a young girl and that carried on throughout her adulthood training as a military member.

You might be doing a fantastic job, but if no one knows that, you won’t be rewarded for it.”

Whether you are at a beginning or advanced level of fitness, focus on the most important aspects of it all: your health and longevity. You don’t have to use diet and fitness as a means to punish your bodies. Be good to your body and nurture it as is has done for you. “

CSM: In those spans of year/s or the experi-ences, who was your inspiration to venture this kind of work or career?JASMINE: My father put a tennis racket in my hands for the first time when I was just 4 years old. I went on to play com-petitively well into my teenage years. As a young child he put a strong emphasis on the importance of physical activity that has remained embedded in me. When the time came to join the military, my body had already endured much of the physical intensities that an athlete can endure and allowed me to succeed in physical fitness. My father’s initial leadership during sports was a major influence in my own capabili-ties to help others reach their fitness goals.

CSM: When you were growing up, what was your goal/s or perhaps your dream before prior to the work your currently in?JASMINE: I can attribute almost my entire goal-oriented mindset to my mother. Growing up, I often times remember hear-ing the phrase “You can do anything you put your mind to.” Her voice plays in my head whether I am trying to run that last mile or finish my last rep. Her words always reso-nated during my younger years as I always dreamed about being a musician. I went on to study music formally and landed a great gig as a pianist and vocalist for the United States Army Band.

CSM: How do you manage your time with you busy schedule?JASMINE: The Army really taught me everything about time management. From early mornings, to late nights, and even 24-hour shifts. I finished my undergraduate degree while I was an active duty Soldier and it was as a result of planning every single hour of my day. I work very hard and also keep my sanity by incorporating hobbies that I greatly enjoy, such as fitness. One of the most important aspects to my time management is my amazing husband who is also a team player. Whatever needs to get done, we communicate and help each other as much as we can.

CSM: How do you maintain your figure or physical physique?JASMINE: I wish I can tell people that there is some magic pill or quick fix but there just isn’t for me. My body always had the ten-dency to put on weight if I wasn’t maintain-ing a healthy lifestyle. My diet stays fairly clean with little cheat days. If I am training for an event I remain completely clean only eating fresh fruit, veggies, lean meats, mini-mal dairy, seeds, and nuts. I am also lucky enough to have an amazing supplemental sponsor, Sexy Freak Nutrition, which pro-vides me with other vital nutrients that I may not be able to achieve with diet alone. Aside from a healthy diet which I empha-size, you can catch me in the gym on most days. I like to incorporate various training methods to include power lifting, circuit training, and even yoga.

PROMINENCE OF GROWTH AND CAREER:

CSM: What motivates you and how do you maintain the drive of your work?JASMINE: Other people motivate me. Currently, I am a member of a team that runs obstacle course marathons and each of them are better than me in different ways. I am inspired whenever I am surrounded by them and they make me want to strive to be a better athlete. Another major motivation is knowing that there is a possibility that I could help someone or make a difference in someone’s life just as there were others who have done the same for me.

CSM: What’s your greatest mistake or fail-ure and what lesson did you learn from it?JASMINE: One of the greatest mistakes I have ever made is choosing to be unhappy whether it was with myself, others, or cir-cumstances. Coming across hard times is inevitable. We’ve all been there. What is most important is that you keep getting up every time you stumble across an obstacle in life. You can cry or be upset but I even-tually learned to let things go, find another solution, and continue on with a smile on my face and love in my heart.

CSM: Wave your magic wand, where do you see yourself in ten years?JASMINE: In ten years I hope to have built an online personal training business. I also hope to have acquired my PhD in psychol-ogy to work as a provider on one of the many mental health facilities on military installations serving Soldiers and their fam-ily members.

CSM: Why do you want to work in this field or industry?JASMINE: It is knowing that I could pos-sibly have a positive impact on someone’s life. There are many dangers that have been presented to our generation and generations to come due to unhealthy habits and leading sedentary lifestyles. If I can spread a little education or knowledge about healthy liv-ing and the importance of physical activity, I would be most happy.

CSM: Without being biased, how would your family and friends describe you?JASMINE: A perfectionist in many ways. Also, an outgoing goal chaser who loves to help out with anything

CSM: Your work can be stressful at times, how do you manage those or handle such things?JASMINE: I try not to sweat the small stuff and just time manage the best I can. I also try and workout every day because it is a great stress reliever and can provide me with a good night’s rest. My biggest support comes from my husband who really goes out of his way on a daily basis to make my load just a little bit lighter.

CSM: During your free time or when you have an enough luxury time to relax for a bit, what are the things you usually do to unwind?JASMINE: Of course I enjoy physical activity as a form of relaxation. I like to go hiking, running, or swimming to unwind a bit. Candle lit bubble baths are on the list for relaxation time. Although I would have to say that there is nothing more relaxing for me than lounging beside the ocean.

You might be doing a fantastic job, but if no one knows that, you won’t be rewarded for it.”

OUTSIDE THE ZONE, OUTSIDE THE BOX:

CSM: What are food and drinks guilty plea-sure you can’t resist and why? JASMINE: Anything sweet! I have always had a major sweet tooth. It is my greatest weakness!

CSM: If you can name five male figures or personalities who display masculinity in their career and great role model for the society, who would they be?JASMINE: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Shaun “Shaun T” Thompson, Donnie Yen, Manny Pacquiao, Liam Neeson

CSM: If you were to name the five things or characteristics that your fan base and supporters doesn’t know about you, what would they be?JASMINE: I am from Florida, I am half Cuban and half Persian, I love to read, I am an introvert, I love Disney movies

CSM: On top of your head, what five adjec-tives describe you best?JASMINE: Silly, Smart, Persistent, Adventurous, Passionate

CSM: Who is the most influential man and woman in the world and why?JASMINE: I respect that each person must have select influential individuals in their lives. I don’t think I could ever name just one woman or man. The most influential people in my life will always be my family and close friends.

CSM: Let’s say a genie does exist, if you can marry someone in the world who would it be and why?JASMINE: I would have asked that genie to allow me to meet my husband sooner. He is really the light of my life and my back-bone.

CSM: You will be stuck in an island on purpose for one year, what are the top ten priority things you will bring?JASMINE: A water filter, knife, camel pack, swim goggles, fishing pole, Brooks trail running shoes, barbell, yoga mat, yoga pants, Harry Potter book set

CSM: If you have an unexplained terminal illness and you’re dying, what would be your one, last dying wish?JASMINE: To build a school in a rural com-munity in Africa to help support continu-ing education efforts for lesser developed countries.

CSM: Lastly, what are your final mes-sages to your fan base and supporters that constantly follow you or at least look up to you?JASMINE: Whether you are at a begin-ning or advanced level of fitness, focus on the most important aspects of it all: your health and longevity. You don’t have to use diet and fitness as a means to punish your bodies. Be good to your body and nurture it as is has done for you. CSM: In those spans of year/s or the experi-ences, who was your inspiration to venture this kind of work or career?RACHEL: My inspiration has always been and will always be to help others and be able to make an impact in someone’s life. There is no greater feeling than seeing my clients reach their goals and push past obstacles they never thought they could.

Today, I still dream of being a pub-lished model, but more realistically in the fitness industry.

PRESENTED BYNGM MODEL MANAGEMENT

She may be a newbie to the industry but a year ago, Melissa’s mother thought it would be a great idea to secretly audition her for Miss Leicestershire 2014. After facing her fears and deciding to push through, her lack of confidence was tested. And yes, she did overcome that fear and her confidence was boosted on another level. Stepping into the modelling world, Melissa’s journey has only improved. As of now, she was signed with the fantastic NGM model manage-ment. The world of fitness and fashion combined. Take note, that’s was just the beginning.

CSM: In those spans of year/s or the experi-ences, who was your inspiration to venture this kind of work or career?MEL: Happiness. Happiness is my inspira-tion. “Success is not the key to happiness, happiness is the key to success”…I believe that if everyone is happy around you then you become a happier person. The ability to make my family proud inspires me to keep fighting for my dreams, keep pushing myself to be the best I can possibly be.

CSM: When you were growing up, what was your goals/or perhaps your dream before prior to the work your currently in?MEL: My dream was to perform. I spent years Dancing as I was growing up… it really benefited me and helped expand my creative mindset…. I still dance in my bed-room mind you ….when nobody’s looking of course! The odd singing into the hair-brush routine makes an appearance now and again. (Come on, we’ve all been there)

CSM: How do you manage your time with your busy schedule?MEL: Apart from being highly organised and constantly writing lists, I think every-body makes time for things they want to make time for. If you’re truly passionate about something, there is always time. No excuses.

CSM: How do you maintain your figure/ physical physique?MEL: I work out in the week and party dur-ing the weekend…. I love the dance floor; it’s like a super exciting cardio session. Your favourite music, favourite people and a chance to boogie the night away and exer-cise at the same time! What’s not to love?

PROMINENCE OF GROWTH AND CAREER:

CSM: What motivates you and how do you maintain the drive of your work?MEL: Apart from my super supportive fam-ily, friends and ngm colleagues… I motivate myself. My dreams and goals in life take over and even though I’m fortunate enough to have people around me always encourag-ing me to push harder, I’m the only person who can put their words into prospective and take action!

CSM: What’s your greatest mistake or fail-ure and what lesson did you learn from it?MEL: My greatest mistake was to not con-tinue with my dance career after a car acci-dent. This taught me that no matter what life throws at you, you should never give up on your dreams. Take the negatives and turn them into positives. Never regret, but always, always learn.

CSM: Wave your magic wand, where do you see yourself in 10 years time?MEL: Hopefully, sat with my bucket list that no longer has boxes left to tick. Looking back, knowing that everything I’ve wanted to achieve so far I have. Every place I’ve wanted to travel, everything I’ve wanted to experience, every person I wanted to make proud, I’ve done so…. And then maybe create a new list of wonderful ideas I can experience!

CSM: Why do you want to work in this field or industry?MEL: All this industry has done is building my confidence. I’ve learnt that if you don’t love your own imperfections how you can expect anybody else too. This industry sure is hard work but with the modern world we live in, being different is beautiful! Whether you’re plus size, skinny, of a different race, old or young…. It doesn’t matter. We are all becoming accepted and we are all unique.

CSM: Without being biased how would your family and friends describe you?MEL: Amazing? Okay maybe not all the time but they definitely love me. They know that I’m always there whenever they need me. They’re the most important people too me and without them I wouldn’t be where I am today….. Each one of them has taught me so much and I would like to add that I’m my mum and dad’s favourite child. (I apologise to my sisters and brothers) Maybe because I was born first (laughs). No but, my mum is my biggest fan!

CSM: Your work can be stressful at times, how do you manage those or handles such things?MEL: Stay positive. Always stay positive oh and calm. I tend to stress about simple things like what outfit to wear, typical female. But you’ll find most of the time things aren’t worth stressing over, there’s always a solution and every cloud has a silver lining!

CSM: During your free time or when you have enough luxury time to relax for a bit, what are the things you usually do to unwind?MEL: Film nights are my favourite! Snuggled up on the Sofa in Pj’s with some sweets or ice cream (yes, we all love a treat) and my family or friends. Sometimes you need to leave the dresses and heels in the closet and swap them for a duvet and slip-pers! Either that or an adventurous day trip somewhere.

OUTSIDE THE ZONE, OUTSIDE THE BOX:

CSM: What food and drinks are your guilty pleasures and why can’t you resist them?MEL: Us British love a good brew. Milky 2 sugars… only problem is I have to dunk a biscuit in. and I am not talking one bis-cuit…. The whole pack disappears… ooops, I blame the custard creams.

CSM: If you were to name five things or characteristics that your fan base or sup-porters don’t know about you what would they be?MEL: That I have a phobia of weird things like sauce touching my hands. I’m so care-ful when squeezing them onto my food, strange I know! I won dancer of the year against around 400 contestants at the earl shilton festival of dance, for a piece I cho-reographed myself- proud moment! That I hate leaving the house without a pack of wet wipes in my bag? Always handy! When given a challenge of making a fashion out-fit made only of eco friendly products, I realised that I was actually very creative. I then modelled this outfit which lead me to winning Miss Eco friendly 2014. That I’m very very family orientated.

CSM: On top of your head, what five adjec-tives describe you best?MEL: Considerate, dedicated, ambitious, helpful and trustworthy.

Nam ut massa turpis, ac blandit justo. Nulla ultri-ces, odio com-modo faucibus commodo, mi nisi tempor”

Never ever give up! Always be happy, believe in yourself. Take risks, create memories and do everything you’ve ever dreamed of or imagined. You get one life, look back knowing you made the most of it. Then you will have truly succeeded.”

Page 37: CSM Women's Issue: The 3rd Anniversary Special Edition

Nam ut massa turpis, ac blandit justo. Nulla ultri-ces, odio com-modo faucibus commodo, mi nisi tempor”

CSM: Who is the most influential man and woman in the world and why?MEL: To me, my mum and Dad. Every experience they have been through, good or bad has taught me so many life lessons. It’s the reason I’m wise, mature, head strong and a good judge of character.

CSM: Let’s say a genie does exist, if you could marry someone in the world who would it be?MEL: In all honesty, nobody. I’m not saying I don’t want to get married; I can’t wait to have a family and pick out the perfect dress. But, I like the idea of supposedly finding my own soul mate, I believe In fate and I believe one day someone will come along and prove why it never worked with any-body else…. We all love our own versions of a fairytale ending.

CSM: You will be stuck in an island on purpose for one year, what are the top ten things you will bring?MEL: Am I aloud to have family as one? (laughs) Friends as 2? Mobile phone …. I hope I have signal and yearlong charge. Camera- Got to make the most of travel-ling I guess, plus a few selfies. Toothbrush, always stay fresh- important to smile. Wet wipes (as you know I don’t leave without them). MUSIC- always makes everything better. A pillow. A tool box to make a boat and sail home. Oh and a fridge full of food…. Everyone loves to eat.

CSM: If you had an unexplainable terminal illness and you were dying, what would be your last dying wish?MEL: That my family were always, healthy, happy and lived the wonderful life they truly deserve. CSM: Lastly, what are your final messages to your fan base and supporters that follow you or at least look up to you?MEL: Never ever give up! Always be happy, believe in yourself. Take risks, cre-ate memories and do everything you’ve ever dreamed of or imagined. You get one life, look back knowing you made the most of it. Then you will have truly succeeded.

CSM helped me achieve that goal and has given me a taste of working someone other than the individual client. I have had several photos published in spreads and a cover photo as well. Seeing my work in print has given me confidence that I can reach for the stars and get there and continue to set goals and work hard at achieving new things.

Center Stage Magazine reached out to me and I was beyond willing to help out. I’ve been in the fitness industry for just over two years and made a small splash in a giant pool. It takes hard work, dedication and persistence to master any-thing. 7-10 years or 10,000 hours is the guidepost to becom-ing an expert in any area.

I have a unique story about turning my life around from a negative to a positive struggling with depression, drugs and alcohol I crashed and hit rock bottom. From rock bottom I built the foundation of my new life and switched my nega-tive addictions of drinking and doing drugs with positive addictions of working and personal development putting my life in God’s hands.

I’ve been blessed with many opportunities gracing the cov-ers of three romance novels and the cover of CSM shooting with some of the world’s very best photographers. On Octo-ber 17, 2015 I will celebrate 4 years of continued sobriety. I commit myself to constant and never-ending improvement and am excited to seize the new opportunities that await me. If one can do it, we all can do it. Cheers to your success my friends!!

Unlike many other magazines, Center Stage Magazine makes a model truly feel significant through the way that they actually keep in contact before and after the magazines are released as well as truly trying to gain insight and get to know us. They really take the time to get to know their models and showcase them in a positive/beneficial light. It’s a magazine any model would be proud to be a part of.

After the publication of my issue, I had man many women contact me and share their stories that were similar to mine. It truly was a blessing to have the abil-ity to reach people from different nations thanks to CSM; I don’t think I would have been able to touch nearly as many lives. Everyone deserves to feel comfortable in their own skin and I am so glad I was able to empower others feel this way about themselves. Thanks Center Stage Magazine, you guys are the best! It was a way that I could explain how it all began in the last 18 years of my passion for bodybuilding and it is increasingly intense. For me, being part of your magazine is overwhelming because I always had the dream of becoming a magazine cover (something many of us wish). Right now, I’m sponsored by sup-plement brand Mex Nutrition which went on sale in 2010 at the hands of Miroslav Egner and the icon Flex Wheeler and the Cool Power branded gym clothes from my great friend Erol Sert. It’s been an amazing year so far for Samantha Tomlin. She has had some wonderful modeling and acting jobs come her way and now, herself and her business partner Jana Forster are about to launch a high fashion model-ing agency for over 35’s: Classic Mod-els. This is incredibly exciting and next year, they aim to have older mod-els on the top catwalks where they should be.

Nam ut massa turpis, ac blandit justo. Nulla ultri-ces, odio com-modo faucibus commodo, mi nisi tempor”

Modeling is not an easy thing to do where people thought you just wear fancy clothes and pose to camera. No, it does not work that way at all. It is not enough because you have to be enchanting. A model should know when to capture the interest of the audience just like casting a spell over someone or something. Aside from that, you must exude elegance in every work you do. Elegance is not just being chic or having that class but a refined quality of gracefulness and good taste. Here at Center Stage, we feature the enchanting elegance of Samantha Tomlin where she conveys an aura of elegance and gentility for fitness, fashion, theatre, enter-tainment and modeling photography.

Modeling and acting is something she fell into later in life. After a career in fashion on the textile side, Samantha was always being asked to go in front of the camera but felt happier behind the scenes. In the space of a few years she had a wide range of modeling work from fashion editorial, catwalk, beau-ty, fitness and acting in commercials, short films and starting to break into movies.

In those span of years, who was your inspi-ration in modeling and fitness business? “I am inspired by strong women that empower and support one another. From my field of work I would say Elle McPhearson and Charlize Theron. They work hard and give back”, Samantha shares. We ask her when she was growing up, what was her dream before. “When I was growing up I was quiet and shy. I always knew I wanted to go into fashion but I thought maybe a buyer or a stylist. I wanted to use my love of fashion

and turn it into a career”, she said openly.

Of course, our first step in career has its own back story. What was your experience when you got into the fashion and modeling business? “My first big fashion show was a charity appearance of Models of Diversity. I was older, more confident and surrounded by models of all ages, colors, and sizes and had a very positive experience”. Let us admit that when your world is revolv-ing around in modeling, fitness or fashion, we cannot deny that schedule can be very hectic. So, how does Samantha manage her busy schedule and keep in track to all the commitments? “Time management is a must in this business. I can’t stand being late! I have my smart phone with my diary and a hard copy of my diary at home too. I have two kids so it’s a juggling act but I thrive on the challenge and enjoy every moment,” Samantha shared it professionally and hap-pily.

Busy schedule, coping with commitments, photo shoots and taping are just examples of daily routine of an individual in this busi-ness. We are curious to know how Samantha really maintains her physical physique. “I’m at a size that my body should be. I maintain it with Pilates and I walk where ever pos-sible! Take the stairs, never the lift”. How many times do you work out in a week? Do you have any favorite workout? “As my work schedule changes every week I can’t have a set time to go to the gym so I have to be flexible with workouts. I will swim or go for a bike ride and Pilates each week. I use a personal trainer to motivate and mix up

the regimes when I need to”, says the super-model. Is there any workout routine you find it very challenging? “I’m not a runner! As long as my legs are my knees don’t like any-thing more than a power walk,” she shares.

What types of food do you eat? Do you have any meal plans or your own customized meal plans at all? Can you share us? “I was a vegetarian for six years but I have started to eat fish and white meat over the last year as I was getting tired and felt I needed the protein. I think everything is fine in modera-tion. You can eat small meals at often times.” At some point in time, we realize that being fit and healthy is must these days because we live in a very fast-paced life. We asked Samantha if there’s anyone who influenced her about healthy lifestyle. “Having children made me realize I need to stay fit and healthy for as long as I can as there is no time to sit around! I see my friends and piers and they inspire me every day,” she revealed.

We have our own guilty pleasures, espe-cially when it comes to food or beverage. Samantha shared and revealed to us the food and drink she cannot resist. “I can’t resist a fizzy drink! Sugar free but still not good for you! Chocolate too but again in moderation is fine.” Name your fitspiration icons or mod-els you look up to. “Cameron Diaz, Charlize Theron and Jennifer Lawrence,” she enumer-ates.

Tell us five characteristics that fans don’t know about you. “I’m positive, kind, strong of mind, always willing to listen and a good friend.” Do you have any pet peeves when working out or going to the gym? “Going to the gym is for some more of a social occasion to parade around! I’m happier no makeup sweaty and getting results so that I why I choose outdoor activities.”

What are your messages to the people that follows your work? “Be the best that you can be. Don’t compare yourself to others as we are not all meant to be the same. Embrace the fact we are all different and support each other in our differences.” What are your final fitness reminders? “Mix it up so you don’t get bored! Train within your limits but be aware also when you can push a little harder. Above all, enjoy and make it part of your lifestyle. I

never weigh myself I go by how I feel”. Juggling big, talented things in life is a huge pressure for individuality. It requires balance, a huge responsibility and time management. You also need consistency to make these things work and eventually exude success. It was not an easy thing at the beginning and at some point in time, it was a challenge that Samantha faced to conquer, survive, and standout.

CSM: Your last appearance for Center Stage Magazine was during the Summer Eye Candy (May-June 2015), what was your experience like when you will be in an international pub-lication?SAMANTHA: When I was last in the maga-zine I have a wonderful reaction from peers and the public. It was a great experience and I had some lovely messages.

CSM: When you were young or let us say the time you were starting out in this industry or field, did you ever dreamt to be on the cover of any publication? What are your thoughts now that you are on the cover for the 3rd Anniversary Special issue of Center Stage Magazine?SAMANTHA: When you’re a model it’s always lovely to be in a publication and the cover is the pinnacle so it is always some-thing that when it happens is very special.

CSM: This year’s bimonthly edition is about being a woman in every way, how would you describe a woman with elegance and class?SAMANTHA: I think embrace that you are and be confident and kind. Let your work speak for you.

CSM: Personally and professionally speak-ing, what is the real measure of being an attractive woman and sexy?SAMANTHA: I think humor is sexy so not taking yourself too seriously and keeping a part of you just for yourself and your family & friends gives an air of mystery

Remember you don’t need to be stressed.

Look at why you feel like that and change

it. If it’s out of your control bring it back

so you can control it and if it’s doable know you will do it

stressed or not.”

Page 68: CSM Women's Issue: The 3rd Anniversary Special Edition

CSM: The industry you are in right now is very fast-paced, competitive and full of talent and politics at times, what makes you stand out from the rest that people will know that you’re you, like your trademark?SAMANTHA: It’s a competitive world but like other industries if you are good at what you do you will be asked back. I’m always told I’m able to switch easily from having a laugh with the crew to getting then shot or the take instantly. Physically I have a strong look too it’s a fashion look and I’m booked for that

CSM: Work-wise and career-wise, what does it take to be successful in this type of career and what is your great advice to those who will venture this kind of work?SAMANTHA: I would say be the best you can be. Work hard and you will get there. You also need to have a thick skin. You won’t always get the job you go for and don’t take it personally.

PROMINENCE OF GROWTH AND CAREER:

CSM: What are the things that excite you and how do you maintain the drive of your work?SAMANTHA: I find everything exciting when it comes to work so I see it more as a passion than a job. Not many people can say that so I see how lucky I am. Keeping a variety of work is good and helping others achieve is also a great way to stay motivated. Hence the new agency giving a specific age group the chance to shine again when they may have been over looked for certain cast-ings due to a number in the age box.

CSM: What was the mistake you will never forget and what lesson did you learn from it?SAMANTHA: I don’t see anything as mis-take only lessons and hopefully ones that aren’t repeated. Trust your instinct. If you think someone is not be honest with you or a situation makes you feel uncomfortable be strong enough to say I’m not happy with this.

CSM: Wave your magic wand, where do you see yourself in ten years?SAMANTHA: The agency will be well estab-lished by then so I hope to be acting and modeling still whilst watching others grow into successful models in their later years.

CSM: Why do you want to stay and work in this field or industry?SAMANTHA: I love creative people and being creative. It’s fascinating and never dull.

CSM: Without being biased, how would your family and friends describe you?SAMANTHA: (laughs) very childish and an optimist always.

CSM: Your work can be stressful at times, how do you manage those or handle such things?SAMANTHA: Remember you don’t need to be stressed. Look at why you feel like that and change it. If it’s out of your control bring it back so you can control it and if it’s doable know you will do it stressed or not.CSM: During your free time or when you have an enough luxury time to relax for a bit, what are the things you usually do to unwind?SAMANTHA: Being with my boys is very relaxing for me as it’s very different from work. A swim or a trip to the park with them is wonderful.

OUTSIDE THE ZONE, OUTSIDE THE BOX:

CSM: What are food and drinks guilty plea-sure you can’t resist and why? SAMANTHA: Champagne and chocolate! Well why not eh! Just not every day!

Page 69: CSM Women's Issue: The 3rd Anniversary Special Edition

CSM: If you can name five female figures or personalities who display elegance and class in career and a great role model for the soci-ety, who would they be?SAMANTHA: Angelina Jolie - her work for UNICEF and her career speaks volumes. Joan Collins - old school star that loves life and also embraces her imperfections. Katie Piper she has been through so much and helped countless others through talking and not hid-ing away. Helen Mirren an older actress that embraces her age and confidently and quietly inspires others. Coco Chanel she was clever in her fashion choices and new what style meant to her and the influence she has in the fashion world has shown believe in yourself and make your vision happen.

CSM: On top of your head, what five adjec-tives describe you best?SAMANTHA: Quirky, creative, kind, calm, and happy

CSM: Who is the most influential man and woman in the world and why?SAMANTHA: Well that depends on what is important to you. The world leaders of the countries or religions would be in some eyes in mine my family influences me the most.

CSM: Let’s say a genie does exist, if you can marry someone in the world who would it be and why?SAMANTHA: (laughs) I would marry Mr. Right! The genie will have to find him for me.

CSM: You will be stuck in an island on pur-pose for one year, what are the top ten prior-ity things you will bring?SAMANTHA: Something to make a fire, to cook with, some rice and flour, plastic to keep the shelter water tight, a blanket, a tooth brush and toothpaste something to wash with and a satellite phone.

CSM: Lastly, what are your final messages to your fan base and supporters that constantly follow you or at least look up to you?SAMANTHA: I would like to say thank you to them all and say that I so appreciate their kind words and the support they show. I hope they all enjoy the new work I am producing now and I hope I inspire others to change career or to try something different as life is too short for what ifs.

CEO and owner of Images By Oliphant

CAPTUREDON FO CUSPHOTOGRAPHY FEATURE:INTERVIEW BYIAN CARLO BAJADA

EDITED BYIVANNA CHRISTENSEN

ason Oliphant is a photographer that specializes in fitness! His daytime hours are spent working in the law enforcement field. Photography has always been a means for him to escape the stress of work. Jason’s first job as a teenager was at a grocery store, and during his time on breaks, he would always go through the magazines, which began his fascination with photography. He has always been a fan of comic books, fitness and wrestling which is why he is being involved with fitness and bodybuilding seemed to always be a natural fit. Fitness competitors are sometimes larger than life char-acters which he often follows in his work. Here’s an exclusive short feature interview to the man behind the lens of a camera.

J

CSM: In those spans of year/s or the experiences, who was your inspiration to venture this kind of work or career?JASON: My inspiration to fitness photography was being a avid sports fan, from my youth until present time. When I was in high school, a classmate began working out and returned from summer break, with a totally different body than he left with. I noticed how all the girls were so impressed with his muscular frame, that I thought, I must give it a try also. I began training with him and began a fan of the gym. I was a skinny kid at the time and became a fan of the sport of body-building. Years later, I was working on glamour photography photo-shoot with a model and I asked her to flex her bicep. After flexing, she asked me if I was into fitness, and I told her that one of my dreams was to be a fitness photographer. The model, ended up doing a great favor, by setting up a photo-shoot at gym where she knew the owner, and she also brought a makeup artist, four fitness competitors and two models. This

photo-shoot was really my launching point. At that point, My Space had all but died and Facebook, Model Mayhem and Flickr were my new photo outlets of choice. In an attempt to get a following I posted often and after seeing a friend of mine, get several friend requests from fitness competitors, I began to simply go to fit-ness shows and take photos of all the competitors and then post them on my Facebook photography page to gain followers. This actually worked for me and I began doing regular fitness photo-shoots in the gym. It’s taken me almost five years to pay dues and build my business to where it is now.CSM: How do you manage your time with you busy schedule?JASON: It’s a tough balancing act, between my “day job”, family and photography but withprior planning I can make it work, most of the times. I miss out on many of “last minuteshoots” but I try to accommodate as many shoot requests that I can.

Growth and Career:CSM: What motivates you and how do you maintain the drive of your work?

JASON: I watch several different photographers that I admire and I constantly grade mywork against their work and try to close the gap between me and them. My artistic growthmotivates me, I enjoy the responses I get from not just fitness competitors but also fellow

photographers and the advice they give me.CSM: Wave your magic wand, where do you see yourself in ten years?

JASON: I honestly don’t know, the landscape of fitness and photography keeps changing. A few years ago, I could post a image on Facebook and reach hundresd of people

instantly, now without paid promotion on Facebook, only a fraction of the people that follow my page seem to see my photos. I’m not sure where instagram or other social

media outlets will be in 5 years either.

I enjoy the people, their stories, their journey and the sometimes larger than life personas of some of the people that I get to work with.”

CSM: During your free time or when you have an enough luxury time to relax for a bit, what are the things you usually do to unwind?

JASON: Trolling social media!! I seem to have a niche with the “First time model” So I often spend time searching for the next big thing! The next it girl!

CSM: Lastly, what are your final messages to your fan base and supporters that constantly follow you or at least look up to you?JASON: I’m really a regular guy, I don’t take myself that seriously. I’ve never

been a camera snob.

CSM: On top of your head, what five adjectives describe you best?JASON: Crazy, Witty, Caring, Emotional and trusting

You’ve known her for charming and kick-ass role in The CW’s Sci-Fi television series Beauty and the Beast as Detective Cath-erine Chandler with Jay Ryan as Vincent

Keller aka your not ordinary, hunky Beast. Kristin Laura Kreuk is a Canadian actress, known for her roles as Lana Lang in the Superman-inspired television series Smallville and as Laurel Yeung in the Canadian teen drama Edgemont. She

has also starred in movies such as Snow White: The Fairest of Them All, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, and Irvine Welsh’s Ec-

stasy (2011). She also won her 2012 People’s Choice Award and two cosecutive Teen Choice Award in 2014 and 2015 for the favorite TV Actress in Fantasy/Sci-Fi. Combined with her charm and wit, she

definitely owned the real essence of beauty in life and career.

But I believe there’s a reason for everything.

Being in this business has taught

me a lot about myself and about other people, and it has been really great experience even though it’s not something I

planned on having in my life.”

Kristin was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. She is the daughter of two landscape architect parents. Her father, Peter Kreuk, is of Dutch descent; her mother, Deanna Che, is of Chinese descent, but was born in Indonesia; and her mater-nal grandmother was a Chinese Jamaican. She has a younger sister named Justine Kreuk. Kristin trained in karate (by the way, she has a purple belt) and gymnastics at the national level until high school but quit in grade 11 due to scoliosis. Kristin was planning to study forensic science or psychology at Simon Fraser University, but was completely taken aback when a casting director for the CBC television series Edgemont contacted her at her secondary school.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

TELEVISION SUCCESSAfter filming the first season of Edgemont (a teenage soap opera set at a Vancouver-area high school) and getting her-self an agent, Kreuk landed the lead role of Snow White in a TV movie titled Snow White: The Fairest of Them All. The film, shot in Vancouver, also starred Miranda Richardson as the Queen Elspeth, Snow White’s evil stepmother, and was directed by Caroline Thompson. It aired on ABC, and later released on DVD, in 2002. In mid-2004, Kreuk took the role of Tenar for the Sci Fi Channel two-part miniseries Legend of Earthsea. The miniseries was filmed in Vancouver, directed by Rob Lieberman and broadcast on December 13, 2004.

Page 78: CSM Women's Issue: The 3rd Anniversary Special Edition

After Snow White, Kreuk’s agent sent an audition tape to screenwriters Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who at the time were putting together the cast of a show they had created for the WB Network entitled Smallville. The series, which was slated to be shot in Vancouver, revolves around the life of teenager Clark Kent before he becomes Superman. Gough and Millar called Kreuk to WB’s studios in Burbank, California to audition for the role of Clark Kent’s first love, Lana Lang. She was the first cast for the show. For a while, Kreuk was starring on both Smallville and Edgemont, although her role on Edgemont slightly diminished over time. Edgemont ended its run in 2005. After seven seasons, Kreuk left Smallville in the beginning of 2008, when her character leaves town. She returned as a guest star in the show’s season eight for five episodes to conclude her storyline.

LANA LANG: FROM SMALLVILLE TO BIGVILLE

THE ROLLER COASTER RIDEIn 2009, Kristin Kreuk signed on for a multi-episode arc in sea-son three of Chuck. She played Hannah, a computer trouble-shooter who joins the Buy More Nerd Herd after being laid off from her previous job. In 2010, she portrayed Ben Hur’s sister Tirzah in the TV movie Ben Hur, which aired in Canada and later on ABC in the United States. In February 2012, Kreuk was announced as the lead female character in The CW’s re-boot of Beauty & the Beast, which was picked up on May 11, 2012, and started airing in Fall 2012.

LIFE IN THE SPOTLIFEAND STAYING GROUNDED

It’s one of the few dry, bright days Vancouver will see during the long and unforgiving winter months. Kristin Kreuk is decked out in a stylish mo-tif that might best be described as European city-gal hodgepodge: cozy brown jacket, turquoise tank top from H&M, jean skirt from Paper Denim & Cloth and mid-calf brown leather boots that she swears are keeping her legs warm.

The raven-haired beauty of Dutch and Chinese descent describes the color of her hand-knitted scarf as “merlot” and the style of her earrings as “eth-nic eclectic.” Sophisticated language such as this is far from lazy Paris Hiltonisms like “that’s hot” or loves it,” - buy, aye, there’s the rub: Kristin Kreuk is far from being your garden-variety Hollywood starlet.

Although she describes herself as “quite silly and odd,” Kristin is well regarded as a the polite “good girl.” The ardent health nut and non-smoker says living in her hometown of Vancouver, “far away from L.A.’s parties and premieres,” is the reason you won’t see her mug splattered all over gossip mags. “I don’t like being in the spotlight,” says Kristin, laughing out loud at the irony. “It seems kind of ridiculous in the profession I’m in, but I love my privacy. I don’t crave drama in my life.”

Melodrama onscreen is a different story. For five years, Kristin played Laurel on the Canadian series Edgemont, and she played Lana Lang in Smallville, now in its fourth season, since its beginning. While she dabbled in theater at Eric Hamber School, Kristin had planned on study-ing forensic science at British Columbia’s Simon Fraser University. But then fate came calling. Right before graduation, Kristin landed Edgemont after her first audition, and then a year later started shooting Smallville in tandem, giving new meaning to “beginner’s luck.” In some instances, you question why you’re in the position you’re in when other people aren’t, says Kristin about her acting windfall.

“But I believe there’s a reason for everything. Being in this business has taught me a lot about myself and about other people, and it has been really great experience even though it’s not something I planned on having in my life.” Other projects, like Hallmark Entertainment’s Snow White and her recent role in Legend of Earthsea opposite Isabella Rossellini, have been shot on her home turf, much to Kristin’s delight. “I’ve been really lucky,” she says. “Being here makes me feel grounded.”

Away from the set, Kristin finds time to hang out with her friends and fam-ily, yet she is fiercely protective of what she divulges to the media. When it comes to questions about her younger sister or her boyfriend status, all she’s say is “I’d like to keep that part of my life to myself,” with not even a hint of iciness. She will, however, gladly talk about her growing up as a bi-racial child. “There were a lot of mixed kids in my school,” explains Kristin, now the face of Neutrogena. “I never felt any different; a lot of my friends were mixed and it meant absolutely nothing. We saw each other as people. There were maybe a couple of incidents where people thought my mom was my nanny and that was the only time I was, like, ‘What? She’s my mom!’”

Page 80: CSM Women's Issue: The 3rd Anniversary Special Edition

KRISTIN KREUK has been in the spotlight for more than a decade, from the time audi-ences fell for her as Superman’s girl-next-door crush Lana Lang in the popular TV series Smallville to present-day 2013, as star of The CW’s Beauty and the Beast, which is about to start its second season in October. Though she’s become a natural at walking red carpets and posing for photo shoots, it took her a long time to embrace fashion as a vehicle for self-expression.

Sima Kumar, Kreuk’s longtime friend and stylist who acted as the creative director for this issue’s cover spread, remembers meeting Kreuk for the first time in 2002 when she was hired to style a photo shoot for Parade maga-zine. “I didn’t know who she was, so I was like, ‘Who is this little girl?’” says Kumar. “She was wearing cargo pants, desert boots and a backpack.”

Prior to acting in the Canadian TV produc-tions Edgemont and Snow White, which she did right before landing Smallville, Kreuk was a bookish high school student who com-peted at the national level in gymnastics. “I was kind of a righteous child,” remembers Kreuk. “I was really anti-shallowness, and in my limited view, I perceived putting effort and caring about what I looked like to be something that was somehow wrong.”

“She comes from a family that didn’t feed into how beautiful she is, and she was taught that your currency isn’t in your looks,” explains Kumar. “So when Kristin first started acting, and there was a need for her to look a certain way, I don’t think she even understood it. It seemed silly and stupid to her, especially as a teenager incubated in the world of a TV set. You understand why you’re getting dressed up to play a character, but it doesn’t translate to why you have to look a certain way when you go out in public.”

It didn’t help that much of her commercial appeal at the time depended on her being the object of desire. “That was definitely some-thing I was also pissed about,” Kreuk says, laughing. “I was like, ‘I don’t want to be seen this way. I want to be seen as a real person. So I’m going to wear the baggiest clothes ever!’”

It took an eye-opening hiking trip to Nepal, where she found herself really sick but sur-rounded by joyful children, for her to realize she was vehemently resisting something she actually loved.

“I literally got out of the Himalayas and was like, ‘I’m going to put on some freakin’ makeup, earrings and a nice shawl,’” says Kreuk. “‘What am I so afraid of? I love beautiful things, gorgeous textiles, colors and craftsmanship. I want to look good and feel good.’”

“She’s very defiant,” says Kumar. “If you tell her she can’t do something, she’ll say, ‘I’m doing it!’ And she does get stared at a lot, so I think she didn’t want to bring atten-tion to herself. But once she worked through her issues and became more comfortable in her own skin, she realized that the way that you present yourself in an aesthetic sense can actually be a very deep representation of your inner beauty.”

As a biracial Asian actress, Kreuk has had a unique career in some ways, because her mixed ethnic background — her father is Dutch Canadian, her mother is a Chinese Canadian born in Indonesia — has often been a strength rather than a limitation.

“I don’t even know if [the casting director] knew I was part Asian when I went out for Smallville,” says Kreuk. “I don’t know what it is. It might just be the way that my mix turned out. I’m definitely not white, but I can bleed across many different categories, and that’s been beneficial to me in many ways.”Though she doubts she’d be pursued for Old English roles, she can play characters for which ethnicity is not a defining factor — Lana Lang, Hannah in Chuck, Heather Thompson in Ecstasy, Maria Lucas in Vampire, even Snow White — as well as characters that are specifically Asian, like Edgemont’s Laurel Yeung and Street Fighter’s Chun-li (though she’s quick to point out that not everyone thought she was Chinese enough, nor muscu-lar enough, for that role).

Page 81: CSM Women's Issue: The 3rd Anniversary Special Edition

Just the fact that she was asked to put on her best Indian accent and mannerisms to portray a displaced Muslim woman (“Yes, if you go to the north of Pakistan, people do look like me, but not many people know this,” she says), resulting in her landing the acting role that she’s most proud of to date, speaks volumes. During a time when American fans’ investment in her was mostly filtered through the lens of Lana’s relationship with Clark Kent, the 2007 Canadian film Partition allowed Kreuk to be a part of a sweeping 1947 love story amidst the partition of British India that resulted in violent political and religious strife.

In recent years, Kreuk has amassed enough clout in Hollywood that both Chun-li and her current role as Catherine Chandler in Beauty and the Beast were specifically written as biracial Asian in order to accommodate her casting. With Beauty and the Beast, she returns to the world of mythology. Loosely inspired by the 1987 series of the same name, Catherine is the “Beauty,” a NYPD detective who, as a teenager, saw her mother murdered, and Vincent Keller (played by Jay Ryan) is the “Beast,” a former soldier who, as part of a top secret experiment gone awry, was injected with a genetic-mutating serum that causes him to have dangerous strength when provoked. This past May’s cliffhanger ended with one of them captured in a helicopter and the other looking up to the sky in despair.

“Last season, we established their love for each other, that they’d essentially do any-thing for each other,” says Kreuk. “Now you have to test it. This season, we’re going to see the toll that it takes on them.”

Though she’s proud of the show, it’s impor-tant to Kreuk that she not be confined by The CW box. Her main goal is to eventu-ally become a creative producer. An actress who’s been reciting other people’s words for a decade, Kreuk wants to have a hand in telling stories of her own. In 2009, she cofounded the production company Parvati Creative Inc., which focuses on human-cen-tric films that feature women both in front of and behind the camera. Supporting women’s voices is an issue she’s passionate about, and she cites female executive producers Sherri Cooper and Jennifer Levin as one of the main

reasons she was excited to sign on for Beauty and the Beast.

In the meantime, she continues to dabble with the unexpected, whether it’s accumulating more international travels (her annual “Wild Women’s Adventure” trip with her three girlfriends has taken them everywhere from Argentina to Ecuador, from Italy to Syria and Turkey, and, this summer, Mongolia), writing personal stories on her new blog called New Culture Revolution (which she and Kumar just started in May while they were bask-ing in Kauai sunshine eating papaya), tak-ing more risks with her off-camera fashion choices (from her “rock-star girlfriend” furry vest look in this spread to showcase her wild side, to her bespectacled 1970s Charlotte Rampling look at Comic-Con 2013 to dis-play her nerdier side), or — Kumar’s per-sonal favorite — throwing out a politically incorrect joke that’s just enough to shock everyone who might think they’ve got her pinned down.

“She’s almost like a little jack-in-the-box,” says Kumar. “People have an idea of her being so prim and proper and innocent, and once in a while, she’ll pop up and be like, ‘I’m not like that!’ If you’re around for it when it happens, it’s jaw-on-the-ground funny.”
