Bonafide all India societies / associations of scientists and engineers and academic institutions are eligible to apply for the Grant. The applications must be received at least three months before the event. The application is to be filled in by the Executive Authority of the Parent Organization and countersigned by the local organizing Committee and the Head of the Institution where the Symposium/Seminar is to be held. Incomplete applications in any respect and those not received 3 months prior to the event will not be considered.

4. (a) Indicate briefly within 20 lines the relevance and scientific / technological importance of organizing the Symposium/Seminar/Conference/Workshop etc. in the context of the present day national needs:

Power systems due to its complex nature are subjected to lot of disturbances and maintaining the stability of the Power System during contingencies is a real challenge for the electrical engineers. Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) at optimal locations serves to provide an

excellent solution for maintaining the power system stability under contingency conditions. Maintaining the system stability during contingencies is essential in order to provide the customers with reliable power at minimum cost.

Electrical engineers are promoting research in the FACTS area with intelligent algorithms to provide solution to the Power systems like enhancement of power flow through the transmission lines, improving the load margin of the transmission lines, power factor improvement, maintaining the voltage profile at the sending and receiving end. The FACTS devices along intelligent algorithms provide a feasible solution to the fore mentioned problems.

This program has been structured with focus on various types of FACTS controllers, hybrid technologies and intelligent algorithm techniques for optimal placement to address various power system problems. Test cases are taken to address various power system problems, contingencies and the impact of FACTS devices at optimal locations during contingencies.

To address the technical issues related to power systems, and to promote research for the various technical issues with the application of intelligent techniques for determining optimal locations of FACTS devices in power systems, the workshop is organized. The main objective will be the evaluation of the current status of research in this area, identifying technical issues that remain unresolved and warrant additional research, and recommend research programs to address the remaining issues.

In the proposed topic no seminar has been conducted earlier by the host institution and special lecturer by experts in the field of Flexible AC Transmission for power system applications. The deliberations will centre around the theme “Hybrid Technology” – “Emerging Trends in FACTS for power system applications” with special emphasis on intelligent algorithms. This seminar will enhance opportunities for interaction among experts from various academic institutions and industries to update curricula about hybrid technology with intelligent algorithms which in turn leads to overall knowledge in the power system stability enhancement.
