These funds will fuel STEAM-inspired classes and pathways for the 2017-18 school year in the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. Total grants of $757,000 include $30,000 for fall grants from The Lipp Family Foundation for science, math and music at the elementary school sites and $20,000 in approved carryover funds. “With Coronado Unified receiving nearly $1,500 less per student than 92% of school districts across the state, due to our demographics, these funds are strategically invested into STEAM academic areas. Education nationwide has increased focus in these areas, particularly in cross-curricular environments, emphasizing how different subjects work together and not in isolation. As an example, a Technology Resource Teacher may be asked to create math enrichment exercises. These funds have also brought band and choir back to both Village and Silver Strand elementary schools,” added Mr. Mueller. What does this mean for your child, grandchild or your neighbor’s child? Children at Village Elementary alternate between Science/Engineer- ing Lab and Cross Curricular Technology Lab weekly, while Silver Strand students have both classes weekly, due to the smaller school size. A student can take his/her interest in engineering from both labs and Robotics programs, and enroll in Intro to Engineering, or new this year, Coding, at Coronado Middle School. This path- way continues with both engineering and computer science at Coronado High School. There are similar pathways in technology, performing arts and band as well. Specifics for each grant can be found below. “The opportunities and jobs of the future for our students will be dynamic, multi-dimensional, and involve integrated content. Students’ comfort in working in several disciplines simultaneously help them realize the important role inter-related content plays in the real world. In CUSD class- rooms and STEAM opportunities, we strive to foster the skills--namely creativity, adaptability, critical reasoning, and collaboration--which greatly help to prepare our students for their future as adults. During my 24 years working within Coronado Unified, I have witnessed the substantial increase in CSF funding, K-12. On behalf of our teachers, support staff, administra- tors and students, I extend our sincerest gratitude to Coronado Schools Foundation donors for making these opportunities possible for our 3200 students,” noted Claudia E. Thanks to the generosity of YOUR donations, Coronado Schools Foundation Board of Directors recently approved Site Program Grants for the four schools in the Coronado Unied School District.

“With Coronado Unied receiving nearly $1,500 less per student than 92% of school districts across the state, due to our demographics, these funds are strategically invested into STEAM academic areas. Education nationwide has increased focus in these areas, particularly in cross-curricular environments, emphasizing how dierent subjects work together and not in isolation. As an example, a Technology Resource Teacher may be asked to create math enrichment exercises. These funds have also brought band and choir back to both Village and Silver Strand elementary schools,” added Mr. Mueller.

What does this mean for your child, grandchild or your neighbor’s child? Children at Village

Elementary alternate between Science/Engineer-ing Lab and Cross Curricular Technology Lab weekly, while Silver Strand students have both classes weekly, due to the smaller school size. A student can take his/her interest in engineering from both labs and Robotics programs, and enroll in Intro to Engineering, or new this year, Coding, at Coronado Middle School. This path-way continues with both engineering and computer science at Coronado High School. There are similar pathways in technology, performing arts and band as well. at Loews Coronado Bay Resort. Alan Kinzel was honored as the Volunteer of the Year for his planning and executing the rst Coronado’s Got Talent on March 2nd, and donating $10,000 to Coronado’s public schools. Based on the overwhelming success of this event with over 25 nalists, Alan is planning the 2018 event in February. Dr. Mullins has been a strong supporter of Coronado’s public schools since 2010, donating over $40,000 as well as his time over the years. “Our business partners and volunteers are the backbone of CSF, both critically important to the success of our work. Their time, talents and treasures are essential in support of our schools,” said Patty Cowan, Chief Executive Ocer. Guests enjoyed a Hawai-ian-themed delicious buet with a guitarist while students from Coronado Middle School, under the direction of Amy Steward and Elizabeth Wertz, displayed their work from KCMS Broadcasting, Digital Media, and Intro to Engineering, courses funded by Site Program Grants.
