Canadian Distinguished Lecture (CDL)Tour Highlights
The Foundation operates the national CSEG Canadian Distinguished Lecture Tour, which is an annual event that started in2005. Many postsecondary Geoscience departments andresearch institutions across Canada host an industry or academicexpert who delivers a presentation highlighting topics of currentinterest.
The 2017/2018 Distinguished Lecturer is Doug Schmitt, aProfessor of Geophysics and Physics at the University of Alberta. He recently completed two terms as a Canada Research ChairTier 1 in Rock Physics. As the 13th CSEG Distinguished Lecturer,Doug presented his talk “Adventures in Scientific Drilling: AGeophysicist’s Perspective”. As of the spring of 2018, Doug hascompleted 20 presentations, wrapping up with the CSEG Luncheon in June 2018.
Outreach Highlights
Frugality continued to be the theme throughout the year for theOutreach committee, which includes University Student Outreach, public outreach and schools outreach. Operating with a$70,000 expenditure budget in 2017 the Outreach and USO teamof volunteers managed to execute their collective programs witha significant cost savings. Kudos go out to the organizing committee and all the volunteers for executing this program. In Januaryof 2016 the CSEG Executive voted to have the Ambassador’sprogram transferred back to the CSEG Foundation under theguise of the Outreach Committee. While University StudentOutreach (USO) is endeavouring to have area representatives atmost Canadian universities across the country, the Ambassador’sprogram essentially does the same thing outside of universitycircles for people within industry. We hope to use the physicaladdresses of these additional volunteers as nodal points for localinitiatives such as teacher conferences and career fairs thatexpand our network across Canada, enabling us to promotegeophysics even better and for less cost. Both programs will beused to support and promote ongoing initiatives such as Scholarships, the Canadian Distinguished Lecturer, and the GeophysicalIndustry Field Trip (GIFT).
CSEG Foundation Chair’s Report
The CSEG Foundation, its Directors, the Fund Development Committee, and volunteers express our thanks to you for choosingto make a charitable gift. Your commitment helped strengthen ageophysical community that remained under pressure in 2017 byenabling continued spending on programs while maintainingmodest growth in the Foundation’s asset base.
Understandably, 2017 CSEG Foundation revenue dropped about5% compared to 2016 ($237k from $251k) but exceeded theprojected budget by about $6,000. The industry that supportsmost of our funding is only now beginning to recover from theworst price and employment level apocalypse in its roughly 100year history, and that recovery is beset with uncertainty. Ourgratefulness is profound and heartfelt. Thank you.
The CSEG Foundation is not yet fully selffunding through ourendowment. It is the Chair’s view that the Foundation must takecare to both deliver programs and be mindful that the asset basemust continue to grow towards selfsustaining levels.
The Foundation is committed to maintaining core programs, asdetermined by the Board, during this downturn. While doing soour financial condition has remained excellent. We continue torely on a mix of laddered GIC’s and the Calgary Foundation’sManaged Fund to provide equity security, along with growth andincome.
In 2017 the Foundation operated on a deficit budget with aportion of endowment income directed to supporting programs. As in 2016, committees were diligent in minimizing costs tocontinue providing their Tier 1 priority programs in an optimalmanner. The net result was a modest increase in FoundationTotal Assets to $2.21M from $2.18M. Some $315,000 was spenton programs. The budgeted deficit was just over $110,000 withthe actual deficit ending up at roughly $55,000, which speaks tocommitment and diligence at both Board and Committee levels.
Core programs are all enjoying continued success. Feedbackfrom participants remains positive. We continue to examineways we can reach across the country and out to the public, inaddition to our efforts to support the geoscience community –none of these objectives is simple. Programs such as EarthScience for Society, Scholarships, Outreach, Travel Grants andLearning Subsidies, Canadian Distinguished Lecture Tour, andSpecial Projects, are making meaningful contributions in thoseareas.
Please have a look at some of 2017’s highlights. They are goodstories thank you for contributing to them.

Financial Update
By awarding me this scholarship, you have lightened my financialburden and allowed me to participate in a graduate geophysicscourse next semester without conflicting with my parttime jobschedule. Thank you for your generosity.
Hilary Chang, undergraduate student, Memorial University of Newfoundland
Outreach and USO have been moving our messaging online, using the website and the internet to reach people beyond ourcurrent geographicallyconstrained reach. By using the CSEGwebsite, we can do more to promote geophysics. The committeeworked hard over the last couple of years to identify quality online videos discussing various natural phenomena of a geophysical nature. As of last summer, 54 videos have been linked to oureducational resources through the website. As part of Phase 2 ofour online initiative, the Outreach Committee has initiated promotional awareness communications through the CSEG Twitteraccount and the CSEG Facebook page to notify followers aboutthese educational videos. The intent is to promote aspects ofgeophysics, heighten awareness of the profession and increasewebsite traffic.
Our messaging is changing. We are trying to promote geophysicsas the science of Mother Earth, encompassing the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and the lithosphere. This can lead into careerssuch as mining, environmental, climatology, earthquake prediction or volcanology, not just in the oil and gas industry.
In 2016, our Outreach efforts included the Challenge Bowl, along with the regional qualifier rounds at regional universityconferences. We continued to support GIFT as one of our coreprograms as it is well attended every year.
Thanks goes out to the entire Outreach committee team. AdrianSmith was our financial person for 2016. Adrian has now steppeddown from this position and has taken on the role of Vice Chairman for Outreach / USO and will succeed Doug Uffen in June2018 as Chairman

It is through your generosity that the CSEG continues to support ourindustry, academics and our community. With the help of Derek Fraser,CFRE, our fundraising consultant, we have developed a new Planned Givingopportunity, in line with those promoted by many universities and othercharities to allow members to leave a legacy.
There are many benefits on both sides to making a charitable bequest, please contact the office for more information.
