Presentation Notes
Supply Chain Management World recently published a report listing the top universities and associations offering supply chain education. The lists were based on a survey to hundreds of professionals to name their top three brands as “markers of talent”. APICS took the association category by a mile, while the Supply Chain Council came second. In 2014, APICS merged with the Supply Chain Council, who brought you the Supply Chain Operations Reference Model, also known as the SCOR model. Together, we are the most recognized association for Supply Chain certification.

APICS has a Global Footprint, with 41,000 members in over 100 countries; with hundreds of partners around the world and over 2000 active volunteers. In addition, APICS offers the two most recognized certifications in the Supply Chain and Operations management profession. The Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) and the Certified Supply chain Professional (CSCP).

“Which Certification is right for me?”

Presenter
Presentation Notes
APICS CPIM demonstrates the ability to understand and evaluate production and inventory activities within a company’s operations. The first exam was held in 1973 and over 102,000 professionals have earned the CPIM. The CPIM requires passing five exams. APICS CSCP validates mastery of supply chain and operations management concepts. The first exam was held in 2006 and over 17,000 professionals have earned the CSCP Our certifications are not only the most recognized, they are the most prolific in the supply chain and operations management profession. One of the most common questions that we get is “Which certification is right for me?” I actually have a pretty simple answer for that. I start by asking where the certification candidate is focused, or would like to be focused, in their career over the next five years?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
OK – so that is “Why APICS?” Now, “Why Certification?” Certifications are awarded by a third-party, standard-setting organization, typically not-for-profit and indicates mastery/competency of a body of knowledge as measured against a defensible set of standards. Those standards are set through a defensible, industry-wide process, such as a job task analysis or JTA) that results in an outline of required knowledge and skills. Certification examinations test both the individual’s understanding and ability to apply knowledge to a specific situation. Certification exam items frequently require the candidate to select the best of four choices based on the information given, and may require him or her to make finer distinctions than the exercises or quizzes in the courseware. A Certificate program, in contrast to Certification, results from an educational process and indicates completion of a course or series of courses with a specific focus; this is different than a degree granting program. The course content is determined by the specific provider or institution, and is not standardized. The Certificate demonstrates knowledge of the course content at the end of a set period in time. APICS Certifications follow best practices in the certification industry, starting with a Job Task Analysis, or JTA conducted by the APICS Research department, in concert with a psychometrician – a statistician that specializes in exam questions. The JTA is a survey about the tasks performed by thousands of professionals, around the world; how important those tasks are and how often they are performed. The results of this survey is reviewed by the psychometrician and a committee of professionals, some with certification and some without and the answers are validated and recommendations about the contents of the certification are given to the Exam Committees. The Exam Committees are responsible for creating the Exam Content Manual, or ECM. The ECM contains an outline of the body of knowledge covered by the exam and a list of references, usually textbooks, that the exam committee used to validate the contents of the outline. Those textbooks are also used to create exam questions. The Exam committee also creates the exam. All exam questions go through rigorous testing to ensure that the questions are relevant and neither too difficult or two easy. Every exam question is tied to a specific part of the outline in the Exam Content Outline in the ECM and comes from a specific recommended reference. It is added to the exam as a non-scored question, or a “pre-test” question. Hundreds of actual exam candidates must answer the pre-test question and then the answer statistics for that question are reviewed by a psychometrician and the exam committee to determine if the question is a good question or not. A good question can be neither “too easy” nor “too hard.” If the pre-exam question doesn’t pass inspection by the pyschomentrician an the committee, then it is removed. It may be tweaked and tried again, or it may simply be deleted. The Exam committee also performs “Cut Score” events where the statistics for exam questions are reviewed by a psychometrician and a committee of professionals, again, some with certification and some without, in order to determine if there has been any change to the difficulty of the questions, how they are performing and to determine the difficulty level of the exam forms. You will notice the grey arrow from the ECM to the Course and Courseware committee. The Courseware committee takes the ECM and uses the Exam Content Outline and the references to develop the courseware. The courseware committee may not see the exam questions and the exam committee does not review the courseware. That may seem counter-intuitive, but remember the purpose of certification is to validate that the candidate meets a minimum set of requirements, not to demonstrate knowledge of the courseware. This process is what makes APICS certifications, “high stakes certifications.” A high stake certification is one where some people’s jobs depend on whether or not they have that certification. Some global companies require one of the APICS certifications for certain jobs with their companies. No certification, no job.

Supply chain outlook

Supply chain is seen as a strategic asset. The post-recession global marketplace recognizes supply chain management as a key driver of business success and viability.

Supply chain management is a well-established role in industries beyond manufacturing, including retail, health care and technology.

Supply chain and operations management jobs are in demand. 200,000 U.S. supply chain jobs will go unfilled annually until 2018 for lack

of qualified talent.*

*Georgia Center of Innovation for Logistics, June 28, 2013

Presenter
Presentation Notes
OK! We’ve talked about why APICS and why Certification, but now lets look at “Why Supply Chain?” Supply chain is increasingly becoming a strategic directive for companies. They compete on their supply chains. The supply chain function can make or break a business. More importantly for you, the Georgia Center of innovation for Logistics predicts that the demand for supply chain professionals will outstrip the supply, in the US, at a rate of 200,000 jobs annually through 2018. This is the perfect time to be in Supply Chain! And APICS can validate your ability to apply supply chain principles through the CSCP!

Why APICS CSCP is critical to supply chain success

The supply chain is all about cooperation and collaboration.

Supply chain management professionals need to understand the interactions and inter-dependencies across the functions, and the often conflicting pressures and imperatives of the various participants.

Many operations and supply chain professionals may not have had the opportunity to work in all aspects of the supply chain and therefore might be limited in their understanding of these interactions.

CSCP provides insights into how the various pieces work together and what tools, approaches, technologies and measurements support and encourage achievement of supply chain objectives.

A CSCP designation demonstrates a grasp of that knowledge and documents the individual’s competence─for the benefit of both the individual and the organization.
