There are some important news items that I wish to report on this issue.

After 13 years of operation, Southern Cross Pitch and Putt in Phillip ceased its operations on 31 January 2013.

The Board of the Canberra Southern Cross Club made this decision in the best interests of the broader membership of 85,000 members as it couldn’t continue to run the Pitch and Putt course when there was insufficient demand for the facility from members and the community. Over the last two financial years, the course ran at a loss of more than $350,000. Members have demonstrated through their lack of use of the facility that there wasn’t enough interest in Pitch and Putt as a member service.

The Pitch and Putt course had been a proud part of the Canberra Southern Cross Club member service offer since 1999. I thank members for their support of the course over this time.

This month (March), the Club winds-up its operations at the Kaleen Club which it has managed since 2008. While we know that some of our members who use the Kaleen Club as their ‘local’ will be disappointed, there aren’t enough members using the Club to justify keeping its doors open. Due to low member patronage, the food service was stopped at the Kaleen Club in October last year.

The Board has decided to close the Club as it operates within leased premises with no opportunity for expansion or redevelopment, and doesn’t fit within the Club’s family-friendly vision for its venues. The Kaleen Club business was acquired as part of the Jamison Club purchase arrangements in 2008.

The closure of the Pitch and Putt course and the Kaleen Club is about strengthening the strategic direction of Canberra Southern Cross Club by providing services which reflect the changing needs and demands of our large and diverse membership.

With growth in mind, there’s a lot of activity happening at our Tuggeranong Club with the renovation of the carpark which will include the addition of a second level with 60 extra parking spaces. I apologise for the inconvenience to members during the renovation.

In the meantime, enjoy all the activities we have planned inside for Easter and Mother’s Day plus all our great dining offers!

The chef who trained the chefs!Meet Natalie van den Bosch, the new chef at our Jamison venue, whose impressive culinary credentials include teaching many of Canberra’s finest young chefs.

Starting her apprenticeship within a small French fine-dining restaurant in Tasmania, Natalie’s experience includes cooking within large hotels in Canberra, running her own gourmet deli and catering business that serviced large government departments, being the head chef at the

Southern Cross Yacht Club for five years, and teaching hospitality students for two years at the Canberra Institute of Technology.

“While I gained a lot of job satisfaction from teaching, it didn’t quite have the same thrill as working in the kitchen where you’re under constant pressure and meeting tight deadlines,” Natalie said. “When the opportunity presented itself to take over the food service at the Jamison Club, I jumped

at the chance as I knew that with my skill-set and experience I could make a real difference.”

Natalie is keen to let members know some of the changes that are occurring on the Jamison menu.

“For the dessert lovers, I’ve introduced a delicious churros (Spanish doughnuts) dessert platter for two which is served with salted caramel sauce, white chocolate sauce, dark chocolate sauce, and skewered strawberries, grapes and marshmallows,” she says. “I decided to put this dish on the menu after visiting the churros cafés in Perth which are an absolute hit.”

“Freshness and flavour is my focus combined with offering more variety to the menu through the specials board,” Natalie explained. “At the moment, I’ve introduced barramundi fillets with honey, lime and cashew nuts onto the specials board which has proved popular with members.”

Natalie has also had extensive experience with functions and banqueting and would love to help with the catering for any important celebration such as birthdays, weddings or anniversaries.

For more information, contact Jamison venue on 6251 2255.

“Staying fit should be a life-long goal for everyone. It helps the ageing process, can help prevent certain illness and allows you to achieve more as you enter what should be the most exciting years of your life,” says Club Manager Mark La Brooy. “We are lucky here at the club as we get to see and hear all of the great stories our older members are achieving. At 60, 70, 80 and even 90, our members are trekking across the world, running in marathons, seeing places they have always dreamt of and I have no doubt that their fitness level plays a major part in that success.”

Club instructor and local legend Harry Hareliuk continues to excel in his specific field of fitness. In his 14th straight year of competing as a body builder, the 65 year old has just won his 11th World Title, an amazing feat. “As you get older it is more difficult to

Fitness has no limit –train at any age

keep in shape. By having competitions you can easily focus for a set period of time.” But Harry just doesn’t want to achieve personally. He welcomes anyone to come and train with him, no matter age, shape or size. “I like to treat every person coming through the health club door as a personal friend. Give them all the attention and help they need to achieve their goals.”

It is this approach by Harry and all the staff at Southern Cross Health Club that helps to see members such as Kathy Colgan (pictured above) achieve amazing personal success through health and fitness. “I climbed Kilamanjaro in 2011. I thought it was a good milestone for my 60th year.” “My philosophy on fitness is that I believe that my level of fitness impacts on my quality of life. As I get older I believe it becomes more and more important for me to remain fit and healthy.”

The team at the Southern Cross Health Club welcomes anyone to come and try their free 7 Day Success Package at the club.

As we age the natural feeling may be to slow down, however the team at the Southern Cross Health Club has a different opinion.
