permits and you have active interest, you are welcome to take this class. !
• Ideal: • CS 147: Intro to HCI • CS 247: HCI Design Studio • CS 376: Research Topics (bonus!) • CS 547: HCI Seminar (bonus!)

Class Format• Series of on-site visits to Bay Area technology
companies • See real-life HCI-practitioners in their own
environment • Hear about how they do in their work life • How did they get there

• Focus on different types of roles

Site Visit Format• Wednesday’s from 3:15 PM - 6:05 PM
• Expect to use 1 hour of that as “travel time” since several of the companies we will be visiting will be in San Francisco!
• Sample agenda: • 4:00 PM: Class convenes at off-campus location • 4:00 PM - 4:10 PM: Check-in/Sign-in • 4:10 PM - 4:30 PM: Walking Tour • 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM: 2x-3x Presentations/Talks • 5:30 PM - 5:50 PM: Discussion • 5:50 PM: Adjourn

Grading• Satisfactory / No Credit

• You must: • Not miss more than 1 class • Participate in the in-class discussion • Participate in the online discussion • Submit a 2-page paper during Finals Week

What is HCI?• the study, planning, design and uses of the
interaction between people (users) and computers !
• HCI is different from other Computer Science disciplines in that it’s all about the periphery !
• HCI is ultimately about PEOPLE • the computers do what we design them to do
