Mid-­‐Term  Exam  •  Thursday,  October  16,  in  class  2-­‐3:15  •  Remote  students  use  a  proctoring  center  •  You  may  bring  one  8-­‐1/2  x  11  sheet  of  paper  with  any  

notes  you  would  like  •  You  may  bring  a  simple  calculator,  but  no  cellphones  

•  This  exam  is  to  assess  your  understanding  of  the  material  covered.    There  will  be  concepts,  terminology  and  problems  to  be  solved.  

•  The  remaining  slides  give  a  MIND  MAP  outline  of  topics  discussed  in  the  first  half  of  the  semester.  

Exam Format •  About five major parts, several sub-parts, questions of

various difficulty •  Very few, if any, numerical questions. Most questions will

be based on your understanding •  Broad set of topics, but emphasis on thinking, not

memorizing. •  Some multiple choice, fill-in the blanks and matching

questions. •  Exam is longish, so manage your time VERY carefully! Do

easy questions first, come back for the rest. •  Most answers are short, one or two sentences, often one or

two words. •  Leave time at the end to review your answers.

How to Do Well in this Exam •  Study ALL the material, but make sure you understand the

fundamentals. •  Study homework questions, be ready for déjà-vu •  Consider variations on the scenarios we discussed in class – “what if I change this..”

•  Be VERY concise and thoughtful in your answers! I try hard to give partial credit, but you may lose it if you write something completely off the mark.

•  Write short answers – long answers are most likely wrong. •  Write clearly!! Use a pencil.

Sample Questions •  Explain why we cannot use an LS or DV protocol for inter-

domain routing. •  Contrast the operation of DV and LS protocols. Which one

converges faster? •  Which transport protocol, TCP or UDP, is better suited for these

applications? File transfer, voice, video-on-demand, interactive video, email. Explain why.

•  Given the contents of a FIB, match a packet with the appropriate entry.

•  Given a prefix and subnet requirements, divide the prefix into appropriate subnets.

•  Give two pros and two cons for NAT.
