Shaping: how I ended up watching at least one movie per day for two weeks straight

AT NIGHT, 3-4 HOURS BEFORE I WENT TO BED...Started with searching for top inspirational moviesWatched trailers to decide what to watch that nightOnce decided, Netflixed the movie, and watched it laying in bed

day 1-7

DURING THE AFTERNOON...Searched for top inspirational moviesOne day, asked friends on Facebook for recommendationsWatched trailers to decide what to watch that afternoonOnce decided, Netflixed the movie, and watched at the desk

At night, the process would repeat but I would watch in bed

day 8-14

This was a blue and purple span behavior.(increasing the intensity of a familiar behavior for a period of time)

Sequencing: how I became the Fundraising Chair for my fraternity

IN MAY 2012...I was extremely frustrated and angry at the current methods of getting money into the fraternity.

We did not have a fundraising chair at that time, so I wrote up a document that listed what I would do if I were the fundraising chair, my goals, and my vision and emailed it out.

I was extremely motivated at this point in time.

OVER THE SUMMER...I lost that original motivation and desire to become fundraising chair.

But our current president was already treating me as if I had the role.

THIS PAST WEEK (SEPTEMBER 24, 2012)...I told the president that I will think about it and will get back to him because I felt that I didn’t really want the position.

After some thinking, I told him that I would give it a try for this quarter.

At our Fall Retreat where we go over the year’s agenda, I publicly announced to the entire fraternity what my goals were, the vision that I wanted to create, and that I will do my best.

I am now fundraising chair for my fraternity.

I created a specific commitment and role for myself electronically via email.

I lacked reinforcement for my original vision & motivation.

An authoritative person kept me accountable to my original commitment/role.

In a structured, serious event, I publicly announced my commitment to the entire fraternity of my position, goals, and vision (in person).

Shaping is designing the same behavior and increasing its intensity. (i.e., Bob starts running for 5 minutes and builds up to 20 minutes)

Sequencing is designing a behavior in a sequential order.(i.e., Bob meditates for 1 minute before brushing his teeth.)
