INTRODUCTION TO ENTRANCE FLOORING

4 PEDISYSTEMS® ENTRANCE FLOORING SYSTEMS

Construction Specialties (UK) Ltd are founder members of the Entrance FlooringSystems Association (EFSA). Our product design puts the emphasis on anEntrance Flooring System, a zonal solution approach designed to protect interiorfloorcoverings throughout the building, by efficient removal of dirt and moisturefrom feet and wheeled traffic. When one zonal area is specified in isolation it isoften referred to as entrance matting or barrier matting.

Mat size recommendationsTo comply with BS 7953 a minimum traffic directionof 2.1m would be required, however many expertsrecognise that 6 metres (or 8 to 10 foot falls) is theoptimum walk-off length of entrance flooring. This dimension would allow for effective dirt andmoisture removal, thereby preventing floors becomingdangerously slippery. The optimum 6 metres ofentrance flooring can be economically achieved bycombining products from two or three zones.C/S Pedisystems can be tailored to suit almost anybuilding budget from lavish to the most basic.

Zone 3Clean-off carpet

Reception and circulation areas

• Cleans and dries the soles of shoes andtyres of wheeled traffic beyond Zone 2

• Prevents dirt tracking from soiled toclean environments within the building, for example from factory to office

• VFR backed patented performancematting

• Easy maintenance

• Excellent appearance retention

Zone 4Surface matting

Targeted areas such as lifts or vendingmachines

• Prevents damage to floorcoveringswhere soiling or unusually high wear isinevitable such as by vending machines, food areas or in lifts

PEDIJET™ LOGOS AND TRADEMARKS

Branding is the principle method bywhich a business communicates with itscustomers. On entering a building, thefirst thing to catch most visitors’ eyes isthe entrance flooring system, and formany businesses, the idea of includingbranding in this area is something theyhave practised for years. In recent years there have been huge advances in the productionprocess of entrance flooring system logos. The latest technologyprovides a printing method combining the benefits of both designprecision and product performance - key elements when choosing acustomised entrance flooring system.

C/S Pedijet™ is an inkjet system that is able to produce nearphoto-quality images on top quality carpet for the first time. Finedefinition can be achieved using lines as thin as 5mm.

The system uses virgin carpet which allows the ink to penetrate all theway through the fibres, producing a logo that will last as long as thecarpet itself.

LEGISLATION

SUSTAINABILITY

Current legislation applicable to Entrance Flooring Systems includesthe following:

BS 7953: 1999: Entrance flooring systems – Selection, installationand maintenance

4. Functions…The function of the entrance flooring system is to:

reduce the incidence of slipping accidents by reducing the amountof soil and moisture tracked onto hard and resilient floors

prolong the life of interior floors by reducing the ingress ofabrasive soil

reduce cleaning requirements of internal floors by reducing theingress of soil into the interior floors/floor coverings

To fulfil these functions an entrance flooring system should have thefollowing qualities:

removal and retention of soil ease of cleaning and maintenance retention of physical characteristics

5. Materials5.1 General…The entrance flooring system should scrape, wipe and retain, makingcontact with both feet of people entering the building and, in the caseof wheeled traffic, with the circumference of the wheels... This appliesto all situations, internal or external, where people move from a soiledto a clean environment e.g. from a kitchen to a dining room or from afactory to an office.

6. Design considerations

6.1 Ease of access…An entrance flooring system should not introduce any features whichmake access more difficult. Consideration should be given to users ofwheelchairs, sticks or crutches. The system should be designedwithout abrupt changes in level which could result in tripping accidentsor impede wheeled traffic.

6.2 Effective lengthThe objective with any entrance flooring system is to achieve themaximum number of footfalls within the space available… In any caseconsideration should be given to such factors as external and internalconditions, traffic levels, size of entrance, use of building and type ofinternal floor coverings.

BS 8300: 2009: Design of buildings and their approaches to meetthe needs of disabled people – Code of practice.

7.1.1 Entrance flooring systemAt entrances to commercial buildings and buildings used by thegeneral public, an entrance flooring system to remove water and debrisfrom the soles of shoes and wheelchair wheels should be provided...

7.1.2 Reception area…The approach from the entrance to the reception point should bedirect, free from obstructions, have a firm, slip-resistant surface andallow easy manoeuvre of a wheelchair…

9.1.3 Floor surfaces...The ingress of soil and surface moisture to buildings, or their transferbetween adjacent internal areas, should be reduced to the lowestpracticable level, e.g. through the use of appropriate entrance flooringsystems, conforming to BS 7953.

Any matting should either have its surface level with the adjacent floorfinish or, if surface laid, be of a type that has a rubber backing andchamfered edges. If, in exceptional circumstances other types ofsurface laid mats are used, they should be securely fixed to the floor attheir edges and at any joints, to avoid the risk of tripping or slipping.

…Deep pile carpets and coir matting on the surface of the floor orwithin a mat well should not be used.

Construction Specialties recognises itsresponsibility to current and futuregenerations for its role in thepreservation and improvement of ourglobal environment. CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

DAILY MAINTENANCEVacuum daily with a powerful suction machine fitted with rotating headbrushes. The brushes will agitate the pile, loosening the soiling which isthen removed by the suction action.

Vinyl, abrasive and serrated insert options can be enhanced byregularly cleaning with a damp mop and a low foaming detergent.

Chewing gum• TextileFreeze the gum with a freezer spray, shatter the gum with a hammerand agitate with a scraper, then vacuum up the fragments. Thisshould be done on a daily basis; chewing gum left longer mayrequire more than one treatment.

• Vinyl, abrasive and serrated aluminiumFreeze the gum with freezer spray and carefully scrape or chip offthe frozen gum, taking care not to damage the inserts.

PERIODIC MAINTENANCEIf the matting has open splines or is a Pedigrid, dirt will fall through theslots in the mat to the matwell and these mats will need to be liftedperiodically and the matwell cleaned out. The frequency with which thiswill need to be carried out will depend on the volume of traffic, but as ageneral rule the mats should be lifted weekly in heavy traffic areas. If the matwell is overdue for cleaning the mat may start to lift at theedges and there may be an audible “crunch” underfoot.

In high traffic areas the matting should be deep cleaned four to sixtimes a year with more of the cleans undertaken in the winter months.Deep cleaning can be carried out using a water spray extractionmethod whereby water is sprayed into the carpet pile, agitated andthen extracted along with the soil or by a dry cleaning method wherebya dry cleaning compound is brushed into the pile where it binds to thesoil and is vacuumed out.

• Water temperatures should not exceed 60°C.• Detergents should be used sparingly.• Only use chemicals suitable for cleaning carpets.• Strictly follow manufacturer’s instructions.

Deep Clean Specification1) Cylinder power brush.2) Dry suction clean.3) Pre-spot treatment.4) Hot water extraction with detergent.5) Hot water rinse.6) Post-spot treatment.7) Post dry groom.

DAMAGE REPAIRIf carpet or vinyl tread infills become worn or a change of colourscheme is required, the individual inserts can be replaced. In theunlikely event of rails being damaged they can also be replaced, thussaving the cost of total replacement.

Loop Pile CarpetDirt can become trapped beneath the loopsmaking it very difficult to clean.

Conventional Cut Pile Carpet

Traditional cut pile carpets are generally easierto clean than loop pile ones but in order toprevent flattening of the carpet they areusually of very dense construction. Thismeans that not only will they hold less dirt butare fairly difficult to clean.

C/S Pedisystems PerformanceClean-off Carpet

The patented high twist and heat set tufts inthe Pedisystems performance carpet act liketiny springs to prevent flattening. This allowsan open construction, not only holding moredirt but also releasing the dirt more easilywhen it comes to cleaning.

SITEWORK

DESIGNAll Construction Specialties entrance flooringsystems can be used as single mats/grids, orin multiples for larger installations. Wheremultiple sections are necessary, an aluminiumT-frame is used between sections. In anylarge entrance area mat sections should butttogether away from central walkways, wheretraffic is heaviest.

Door positions and general flow of pedestriantraffic should be clearly indicated on plans, sothat mats can be correctly manufactured andinstalled to gain optimum economy, appearance and wear.

It is advisable to allow sufficient mat trafficdirection to remove all grit, dirt and water thatcould be expected at the entrance.

To comply with BS 7953 a minimum trafficdirection of 2.1m would be required, howevermany experts recognise that 6 metres (or 8 to10 foot falls) is the optimum walk-off length ofentrance matting, which would allow foreffective dirt and moisture removal, therebypreventing floors becoming dangerouslyslippery.

Please note C/S Pedigrid is a fixed modularsystem. The internal matwell dimension intraffic direction must be a multiple of themodular size (38.07mm).

Irregular-shaped mats

A dimensionally stable template is required forthe manufacture of irregular-shaped aluminiumor stainless steel based entrance mats(hardboard or plywood templates are ideal).

SUB-FLOORPREPARATIONRecessed installations

Correct matwell preparation is critical to thesuccessful installation of entrance mats.

The matwell depth should be prepared to suitthe depth of the frame selected for installationwith a particular Pedisystems model. It shouldtake into account that the top of the frameshould be installed flush with the intendedfinished floor level.

The frame should be secured in the matwellfirst. Packing beneath the frame may benecessary in places where the matwell’sdepth exceeds that of the frame. A levellingscreed should then be applied to the base ofthe matwell to bring it level with the frameflanges.

Ensure that the achieved finish is level bychecking with a straight edge. A departuregreater than 2mm from the bottom of a 3metre straight edge may compromise theperformance of the entrance mat.

The screed should be fully cured andhardened before proceeding with theinstallation of the entrance mat.

Zone 3 Clean-off Carpet Installation –Preparation of sub-floor

The sub floor should be level, clean, dry andfree from grease, dirt and other contaminantsthat would affect adhesion. If the floor isuneven a self-levelling latex skim should beapplied. If the floor is dusty or absorbent itshould be primed in accordance with theadhesive manufacturer’s instructions.

INSTALLATIONFull installation instructions will be suppliedwith our products. They can also bedownloaded from our websitewww.c-sgroup.co.uk or requested on01296 652800. The following are generalguidelines only:

Some Pedisystems models (Pediluxe,Pediluxe Gold, Pedimat and Pedimat Ultra)are supplied with vinyl endfiller for fieldtrimming. These mats may appear oversizeuntil the endfiller has been trimmed.

Lay mat into prepared matwell and roll out.The natural slack between rails should beclosed by condensing the rails towards thetrimmed end. Work your way along the matrails until you reach the opposite side.Carefully trim the remaining vinyl endfiller afterensuring all slack has been taken up.

Ensure that there is door clearance for anydoor movement (this is particularly relevant forsurface mounted applications).

Ramps & slopes

All Pedisystems products can be installed tosingle plain slopes or ramps. This may requiremechanical fixing methods to be used.
