About the Author Sharon Elaine Thompson freelances from Salem, Oregon. She has worn jewelry and picked up rocks since she was old enough to stand. She has both Graduate Gemologist (GG) and Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (FGA) diplomas, as well as a BFA from Marylhurst University. An enthusiastic traveler, she has lived and studied in Japan, traveled with gem and mineral enthusiasts to Brazil, journeyed to southern Africa with members of the Los Angeles Zoo (where she was a docent for five years), and made two “grand tours” in Europe. Design ©2014 by “Sharon was instrumental in the design and development of an important trade education course. She came into the project under challenging circumstances and still delivered well-conceived and well-written content, on time and under budget. In addition to all that, she was a delight to work with! I would highly recommend Sharon for any project requiring quality editorial development and/or in- structional design work.” Kate Peterson, President, Performance Concepts, Inc. “I found [Thompson’s] research to be meticulous and thorough. She writes with clarity and attention to detail and knows how to make difficult scientific material accessible and interesting to young readers.” Margaret Goldstein, Editor, Death Trap: The Story of the La Brea Tar Pits, Lerner Publications “Her work was creative, thoughtful, pedagogically sound, and delivered on time in a professional format.” Deborah Kopka, Editorial Director of Career Education and Marketing Education, Glencoe Division of McGraw-Hill School Publishing Company “The features she writes for [Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist] are still among the best in it. In particular, I value her ability to define her subject quickly and clearly, and then to explain or describe it in greater depth with the same clear sense of purpose. The results are not just informative but compelling.” Merle White, Editor-in-Chief, Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist What Editors and Reviewers Are Saying Articles More than 300 articles on a variety of other topics including: shoplifting, small business, mining history, design, jewelry-making equipment and techniques, artist profiles, and intellectual property rights.
