South Korea's August inflation hits record low, Q2 GDP downgraded

South Korea's year-on-year inflation in August dipped to an all-time low as farm product prices

plunged on improved weather and consumer demand remained weak, strengthening the case for

another central bank rate cut as early as next month.

The consumer price index was unchanged in August from a year earlier, Statistics Korea data showed

on Tuesday, missing a 0.2 per cent rise tipped in a Reuters survey and marking the lowest since the

country began releasing inflation data in 1965.

Separately, the Bank of Korea (BOK) on Tuesday revised down the economic growth for the April-

June period to 1.0 per cent on-quarter from a 1.1 per cent gain reported earlier, citing weaker exports

than estimated earlier.

The weak inflation and economic growth data add to concerns about a deflation risk for Asia's fourth-

largest economy, despite assurances from top policymakers that inflation would soon pick up to 1 per

cent.

UK retail sales flat-line, consumers stockpile food for Brexit: surveys

British retailers saw their sales flat-line in August as shoppers cut back on non-essentials and some

households stockpiled food ahead of Brexit, surveys showed on Tuesday.

Annual total sales growth fell to zero from the weakest July rise on record of 0.3%, the British Retail

Consortium, which groups major high-street chains and supermarkets, said.

That pushed down the average pace of sales growth over the past 12 months to 0.4%, the weakest

since the BRC began its data collection in 1995.

Britain prepares for parliamentary showdown as opposition lawmakers try to stop no-deal

Brexit

Westminster is poised for high drama over the coming days, with market participants likely to closely

monitor the political ramifications of a parliamentary showdown.

U.K. lawmakers return from a summer recess on Tuesday, with less than 60 days to go before the

world’s fifth-largest economy is scheduled to leave the European Union.

It provides the first chance for rebel lawmakers to take steps to stop a so-called “no-deal” Brexit on

October 31.

Peru to boost border security after stricter entry rule for Venezuelans

Peru plans to beef up security at its border with Ecuador to prevent illegal immigration, after stricter

entry requirements for Venezuelans led to a 90% drop in legal crossings, a government official said

on Monday.

More than 850,000 Venezuelans have fled their homeland for Peru in recent years, part of a mass

exodus from the Caribbean nation as it faces a crippling economic crisis.

Russian oil output highest since March, tops cap target

Russian oil production in August rose to 11.294 million barrels per day (bpd), topping the rate

Moscow has pledged to cap output at under a pact with other producers and hitting its highest since

March, a data showed on Monday.

Energy ministry data showed oil output rose to 47.763 million tonnes in August from 47.149 million

in July.

Pipeline exports stood at 4.610 million bpd last month vs 4.609 million bpd in July.

The production increase follows a report that OPEC cranked up its output in August, for the first

month this year, as higher supply from Iraq and Nigeria outweighed restraint by top exporter Saudi

Arabia and losses caused by U.S. sanctions on Iran.

Binance Launches $216,000 Futures Trading Contest on Testnet Platforms

Binance has launched two futures testnet platforms — inviting users to participate in a 10,000 Binance

Coin (BNB) trading competition.

The major crypto exchange has launched two futures trading platforms named Futures A and Futures

B in testing mode — allowing customers to participate in a simulated trading competition, Binance

announced on its website on Sept. 2.

According to the announcement, Binance will award winners with a total of 10,000 BNB, worth about

$216,000 at publishing time. During the competition, Binance will provide all participants with

100,000 Tether tokens (USDT) in simulated funds on both Binance futures platforms, which means

that each account will receive that amount of USDT for testing purposes only.

Facebook's Libra currency could undermine European Central Bank – official

Widespread adoption of Facebook's proposed "Libra" cryptocurrency could harm the European

Central Bank's (ECB) ability to manage the eurozone economy and threaten the euro itself, a top

official said Monday.

Facebook announced Libra in June, promising the digital currency would be backed by real assets to

escape the wild price fluctuations that hit pioneering schemes like Bitcoin.

But central bankers, politicians and regulators around the world are mistrustful of the private digital

cash scheme set to launch in the first half of 2020.

"Depending on Libra's level of acceptance and on the referencing of the euro in its reserve basket, it

could reduce the ECB's control over the euro," said Yves Mersch, a board member at the Frankfurt

institution.

Bitcoin (BTC) Hashrate Gains Another Peak

The Bitcoin (BTC) network saw another mining peak, reached within a day of heightened activity.

Mining touched a pace of 86 EH/s, an unprecedented number of hashing operations, after days of

relatively weaker mining.

The heightened mining is happening despite the recent peak difficulty. Miners are also joining in

despite the recent drop in BTC market prices. Despite the adage of “miners follow the money”, even

at $9,500, BTC is attractive enough. Also, miners tend to follow block rewards, and for the Bitcoin

network, only about four months are left until the block reward is slashed in half to 6.25 BTC.

Dash (DASH), ZCash (ZEC) will be removed from the UK-based CEX IO cryptocurrency

exchange.

Coinbase has told customers in the U.K. it will remove support for Zcash (ZEC) on the 26th of August,

2019, just days after British tax authority HM Revenue & Customs reportedly requested customer

and transaction data from the cryptocurrency exchange.

The announcement was first reported August 9th by U.K.-based users of the exchange, who said

they’d been advised by Coinbase they could either withdraw ZEC balances or convert them to any

other supported cryptocurrency in advance of the deadline. Any balances remaining on the platform

August 26th will be automatically converted into GBP, according to user reports.

Indian IT Giant Tech Mahindra to Launch Blockchain Finance Management

Tech Mahindra, the IT subsidiary of Indian conglomerate Mahindra Group, partnered with American

distributed ledger technology (DLT) firm Adjoint to launch a blockchain financial management and

insurance solution.

elecommunications industry news outlet CommsMEA reported on Sept. 2 that the solution is the first

of its kind. With this service, clients will reportedly be able to save $4 million for every $1 billion of

financial risk management and banking relationships.

South Korea’s Kakao May List Its Klay Token on Chinese Exchange

South Korean internet giant Kakao is reportedly planning to list its cryptocurrency Klay on a Chinese

crypto exchange and one local exchange.

According to a report by local news daily News1 Korea on Aug. 31, Kakao’s blockchain arm Ground

X is in talks with two popular cryptocurrency exchanges for listing its native coin Klay.

7 Thai Cryptocurrency Exchange Bitcoin Co. Ltd. Closing Down Operations Negative (-)

Thailand’s leading cryptocurrency exchange Bitcoin Co. Ltd. (BX.in.th) is closing down all of its

trading operations.

The exchange announced its decision to discontinue trading on Sept. 2. The official website of the

exchange states:

“Bitcoin Co. Ltd. has decided to discontinue offering digital exchange services and wallet services at

our BX.in.th website in order to focus on other business opportunities.”

The five-year-old exchange, which was regulated by the Thai Securities and Exchange Commission,

will not seek to hold a Digital Asset Exchange license for the year 2020 and has therefore asked its

customers to withdraw their funds before Nov. 1, 2019.
